These converters do work - I know this as I converted my Humax 9200T to a SATA drive. About £2 each from China.

Be aware that these drives spin at 5900rpm and not 7200rpm as is pretty standard these days, so will be slightly slower. They are designed to run 24/7 so run cool and quiet

I used this drive to upgrade the 9200T from 160GB to 500GB a while and not a single issue just so long as you get this drive and the right converter this is the one that was suggested to me at hummy.org http://www.kikatek.com/product_info.php?products_id=73288 and it works fine, only drives left now

This is probably the cheapest way to get a 500gb Hard Drive but price per gb is high and there are a lot of hard drives which will have a 3 year guarantee for not much more.

Be careful - not all brands of converter work in PVR applications.
I used the 320GB version of this SATA drive to replace the 250GB PATA drive in my Topfield TF5800 a year ago and it's been excellent - no noise and runs a lot cooler.
But before I bought it I checked on the http://www.toppy.org.uk forums to find out what was involved, and there were lots of posts about problems with SATA to PATA converters - it seemed that only a couple of different chipsets were suitable.
I ended up buying a Startech one from Kikatech - works fine, but check the forums first - I did mine a year ago (a year and a week to be exact!).

Check this for a cheap power lead converter old style to new :
I did a lot of research before upgrading the drive in my Hummy, it seems it's pretty fussy about the drive you put in, and ive heard a lot of problems with people who've used sata/ide convertors with blocking and noise and the drive not being detected when the box is turned on, plus missed recordings...
you can buy PATA HDDs from humaxdirect.co.uk and rest assured they will work, it is however more expensive than shopping around...
Still a good price for a 500GB HDD though.

You can buy ide/sata converters so you can fit newer more efficient (+cheaper) sata drives in older IDE (PATA) systems,

Why didn't I think of that! PATA drives are SO expensive!!

Might wanna let people know this is a desktop HDD, so no good for laptops or ps3 etc

11 Jan 11#4
I assume they must as you can still buy them on Amazon for example, I assume people with older PVRs, Laptops and Pcs still might buy them, think they are at a price premium over Sata though.

Shame I think my Humax 9200T is IDE/PATA so a Sata drive would be no good.

Do the manufacturers still make PATA drives?

If you are buying a converter don't go for the cheap makes. It is always worth spending a few pound more to get one that works.
