Doh!! (or dough!) I can't believe it....we too thought it was odd to use 3 X 1/3cups - no wonder the bread has been so small!! Thanks for mentioning this, new one is in the machine with the right amount of flour and water and I expect it to be much more substantial! lol

I've made two loaves so far (basic white & French) and they've been great! I used Allinson's strong bread flour and Tesco's own fast action yeast.

I measured the flour using the measuring cup provided even though the instructions clearly state that this should only be used for measuring liquids! A bit confusing but the end results were fine.

This may seem like an odd question but seeing as I don't have an oven in my flat, could I use this as an oven?
BorisTheSpider
30 Jul 10 #115
To actually make a good loaf - equivalent to that purchased from an instore bakery - you need to spend just as much on decent flour and yeast (plus the other bits).

As sotomonkey said, add electricity onto that and your bread maker offers no benefit!

Unless you're making special/unique style breads which cant be bought instore, its really not worth the effort, kitchen space, noise, and costs!

If you really want to get into bread making, get a kenwood/magimix and use your oven instead!
sotomonkey
29 Jul 10 #114
How much does each loaf of bread cost once you take into account the cost of the electricity, cost of ingredients and the minimal labour required (remember you should wash the thing after each use). It's rare I spend more than 50p on a loaf of bread (loads of stuff reduced, get some quite good fresh crusty baps round here normally for about 10p for four) and such loaves last far longer than anything you can make in that. Granted fresh bread from a machine like that tastes better and you can have some fun experimenting with ingredients but I can't imagine the bread lasting very long.

Still a couple left in the Burnley store (Prestige Retail Park), right next to an identical machine branded 'LOGIK' that was £39.99. I guess the re-branding is the reason for the price reduction on the 'Carlton'.

WOT! It takes 2mins MAX to chuck the ingredients in.... press the delay button and then fresh bread in the morning without even having to leave the house! I can't believe the people being negative on here! It couldn't be simpler to make your own bread in one of these, it takes absolutely no time to chuck the stuff in, and you'll save £13.99 in no time! 8-/
weemee002
29 Jul 10 #111
oh come on! that's perfectly clear!
Followed the instrcutions to the T, using a proper CUP measurer, and not a random mug from the cupboard and the bread turns out perfectly. Just as good as my mate's Kenwood.

Just saved £13.99. Life is too short to make your own bread.

What I find amazing about these things is how many people buy them. Half the people in the country probably can't be bothered to take the time to make a proper meal half the time let a lone make their own bread.

Fair enough to those people who can find the time to do this but I find it hard to believe that many people who buy them do. The majority of people I imagine buy these things as a novelty and soon tire of them.

The majority of people should consider very seriously whether they're going to use this much. Otherwise it really is a waste of money, even at this price.

Although I have a bread maker, if I really needed my morning bread to be fresh, I would personally rather:

a) Pop to the local coop for a fresh loaf
b) cook some part-bakes.

I once had the motivation to make the bread also, but it soon tires.

Your will is strong. I give it 2 months.
davidmaiden18183
29 Jul 10 #108
This may be true in taste terms, but unfortunately I can not get Asda to magically appear in the mornings I desire with a fresh loaf freshly baked and in my house ready for breakfast.

Would defeat the object if I had to wake up get dressed, drive to the shop and come back before I could have a nice fresh (and perhaps warm) loaf for breakfast. That alone is worth £13.99.
BorisTheSpider
29 Jul 10 #107
Ive got a morphy richards one which boasts a "collapsing paddle", to stop it leaving a big hole in the bread. Not once has it ever collapsed.

I also found that the bread was ready in 3hrs, but gone in a few mins (loaves too small), so ended up using it for pizza dough only, which it was adequate at.

I expect most, after a month or 2, will realise the bread isnt as good as shop bought, and its much easier to just grab a loaf when doing the shopping, rather than faff around with one of these!!!!

Sainsburys fast action dried yeast suitable for breadmakers.

Success! We changed the yeast from some expensive stuff to Tesco Quick Yeast and instead of a cheese and onion loaf just did the ordinary one.

Tastes lovely.

Thanks for the advice.

ps, have used lidl's strong bread flour and the yeast sachets they sell , instant dried yeast.

I have made 2 loaves, basic one to start with- perfect, then garlic bread load, also perfect! Paddle did get stuck both times but it's not a big problem as it just gets pulled out! Bread has a great texture. Hubby looking forward to a Brioch loaf tomorrow.

One thing to remember is to follow the recipes, and 1 1/3 of a cup is one full cup and a third- not 1/3 of a cup which we think is where some peeps have gone wrong!
bambam0074
27 Jul 10 #94
For those getting bad results, what make of yeast are you using. In my old breadmaker I had terrible results to start and almost binned it within a week. Then I realised it was the dried yeast I was using
rhinopaul to bambam0074

OK, Yes its dried yeast but it says on packet can be added straight to mix. So you think this is where its going wrong?

I bought this on this deal, but could not be bothered chasing around the stores trying to find one locally in stock so I chose the home delivery method. It came this morning via DHL and have just made my first loaf in it. I chose Basic, white 700G, medium crust loaf with fresh bought ingredients and I can honestly say it makes excellent bread. Yes the kneading paddle did get stuck inside the loaf, but it comes with a kneading paddle removal tool (A basic thick wire with a hook on the end of it). I carefully prised the paddle out and it did not leave any huge holes in the bread. Just be gentle and dont rip it out roughly, and you will find it plops out nice and easily, I did this after leaving it to sit on a cooling rack for around 3 mins after taking it out of the machine. The bread is excellent slightly warm with melted butter on it and also I used Butter & Jam once it had cooled properly, the taste is comparable to any shop bought loaf of the same types I.E in store bakery type bread,( not farmhouse or kingsmill bread as these are mass produced and are not the same type.) I really would recommend this machine to people, and for those of you who have had problems, make sure you follow the directions to the letter and use fresh ingredients (I used Allinsons Strong White Flour if that makes any difference to people)

Now I need to find an electric bread slicing machine somewhere, as I cant cut it straight if my life depended on it:) Thats my fault though not the bread

hope this helps others

Baked simple white loaf using a pre made bread mix (about 70p) added water - chose delayed quick program and woke up this morning to a fantastic loaf!
It's definitely got a more finer and denser texture than off the shelf stuff - but I guess that's what fresh bread is meant to be like.
Love it - but will probably end up the same shape as one of the loaves it produces....

27 Jul 10 #81
It does seem odd . The flour used was that according to the manual. Also the question is , why was it reduced in the first place.
It will be interesting to see if any has yet had a good loaf
davidmaiden18183
27 Jul 10 #80
Hmm.

I got mine yesterday and haven’t used it yet. Has anyone had any positive experience and it made a decent loaf. You do need to use different flour etc for breadmakers.

I genuinely can’t believe this would have got an average over 8.1 on impartial review sites and be sold by Tesco and Sainsburys under their own brand name if it is a complete load of rubbish.

The same as:

http://direct.tesco.com/q/R.204-7334.aspx

at Tesco for £37.89

I have had one for about a year, and it's pretty fool proof - the instructions as simply and take all of about 3 mins to add the ingredients. And the bread is great!!

But I have to agree about the paddle - I have never yet managed to remove a loaf and the paddle stays on the bottom of the tin - it ALWAYS come off and you have to dig one side of the bread out to get it!

But at £13, do it carefully and slowly, and it won't be to bad!!
