If you ever go to Loughborough then you should be on the lookout for a big man wearing no clothes, walking away from Richer Sounds towards Poundland with a Lowry LCD TV tucked under his arm muttering ‘Walk away son, walk away.’. He will be farting terribly and wearing a fake Rolex watch on one wrist, with a cable tie and duck tape on the other and clutching a HiDef video camera. He will be accompanied by an blonde ex-porn star with huge bazumbas called Susie, who may be on her way to the adult film awards. She also will be almost naked, especially during England matches, although wearing crotchless knickers, suspenders and holdups. She tends to flinch at the sight of a table tennis bat. There will be a queue of traffic backed up behind her – this is apparently a regular occurrence whenever she is out and about in Loughborough. She may, however, be dripping in Malibu, Bacardi or Baileys especially around her nether regions and you may hear a strange buzzing sound when she is around. Should they spot an outdoor stool outside a bar they may just get straight down to business and ask someone to film it. Then reality will kick in and the the dream will fade and he’ll find himself back in the secure wing…….

You don't need to transcode them, just put them through MKV2VOB and it just remuxes them in a couple of seconds, probably does nothing more than renames the extension and changes a few bytes, then it will play them natively.

Is it just me, or is that perhaps the ugliest piece of kit out there? Granted you should be watching the screen when it's giving out a good picture quality, but if you have spent hundreds of pounds on a nice tv and stand for the corner of your living room then this would just ruin it.
Looks like a 90s tape deck and the LCD screen looks like it was stolen from an argos alarm clock. Good for hiding away in the bedroom I suppose at this price, but I'd rather fork out just a bit more and get something that performed as well but looked better also.

I bought a Sony BDP S350 less than a year ago, which Sony has already made obsolete by refusing to upgrade the firmware in the 350 and 360 models to allow Sony internet streaming as it would slow sales of their new 370. So if there was a brand to stay away from IMO it would be Sony. Onkyo seems to be a much better brand to me.

Will it have compatibility issues.
Can it ever be updated.
in short is it worth getting or would my money be best spent elsewhere.

i have one of these and it kicked the ps3s arse, the sound is amazing video excellent and much warmer than the ps3 imo. This is being played on a reasonably good pioneer kuro 46"
Only downside imo is the menu system i hate how you get 1080p playing kick ass blu rays and then the menu is like a BBC computer display just lacks quality and also functionality is a little bad as menus are difficult to navigate but the manual is pretty hot at sorting stuff out.

" if Onkyo made cars they would be a Lexus "
I wouldn`t say they are LEXUS in Hi-Fi world. I don`t think they are very popular brands like Pioneer or Denon as in the UK, so don`t recognizing them don`t make you a fool, why don`t you guys go easy with the poor lad?
Sony do make GOOD budget Blu-Ray players, +£20 more get you a very decent player is true. BD live will be every where and without it does seems to lack some experience for the BD you have brought.

denon stuff is awesome.....i paid about £000's for hifi seperates including a denon amp
lasted faultlessly for 22 years - used daily at 1-6 hours aday sometimes pushing it too - until i sold on ebay in perfect working order for decent money ....denon wouldnt make cars - theyd make tanks
but the denon amp was superb (replaced a technics amp) and worth the £400 then
big fan of denon amps but the onkyo had more features and was £600 cheaper....denon looked nicer though and prob sounds a little better
royals
5 Jun 10#120
onkyo's amplifiers have won many awards,
if onkyo made cars they would be a lexus...superbly made, does everything well, packed with lots of features not found on other makes in their class (i bought an onkyo 605 av amp 2.5 years ago for about £350 rrp £450 - if i bought an amp from denon or sony with the same features it would cost £1000 and whilst im sure the denon as they make exceptional amps would be a good match the sony wouldnt as their amps are garbage)
cant comment on their br players tho...to be fair though sony make good br players, but they skimp on features

I know the brand Onkyo but they aren’t exactly mainstream. If I stopped 10 people on the street I wouldn’t be surprised if less than half of them had heard of them.
So somebody on the forum hasn’t heard of them, big deal, get over it.
It’s you saddos that have to maliciously poke fun at someone for something so trivial that is a bigger deal to me. Some of you must have such low self esteem that you need to jump at the chance to ridicule someone for not knowing something that is an irrelevance. He merely hasn’t heard of an AV manufacturer but you have no class.
This isn’t aimed at everyone that commented as a bit of fun is good but just on those that took it too far.

Montana 78 said are there any blu-ray players with MKV 720p/1080p support? i heard there was supposed tobe a JVC & philips but cant find any.
anyone know anything on this?
LG BD390 is now retired and is getting more difficult to find, and has been replaced by the LG BD570 which can be had for under £170 and so long as you don't need analogue sound, it does exactly the same as the 390 and has a few extra streaming services as well, Picassa and Accuweather.
I own the 390 and have set up a 570 for a friend and they both play/stream 720p/1080p mkv's and play any file size via ntfs on ext hdd fine (I have found mkv files when encoded in h264 or x264 with a profile 4.1 and AC3 or DTS 5.1 sound, means you should experience no problems in playback terms). of course there are plenty of other formats listed here that they can play.

You appear to be confusing me with someone else. I merely stated that given how locked down BD's DRM is, and its requirement for constant firmware update availability in order to continue to be able to play newly-released BDs, I think I'd probably opt for Sony if I was going to "upgrade" from DVD.
This is on the basis that I would expect Sony (as both a content publisher and hardware manufacturer) to provide firmware updates for longer than hardware-only manufacturers (excellent though they may otherwise be) as whilst Sony have a financial interest in keeping their hardware customers buying newly-released BDs, the hardware-only manufacturers only have an incentive to sell you a new BD player in a couple of years' time.
I don't like the rules of the BD game, though, which is why I'm choosing not to play, saving money, and sticking with DVDs.

Nice deal, but there are like, what, 12 available in the whole country - and only one per store (if you are very lucky). I used to be a Richer Sounds fan but their constant advertising of deals that are so limited and rare as to be not worth bothering with really bugs me. Plus when you actually get there they don't have half the stuff advertised and try to flog you somehing else.
Also, years ago Julian Richer was actually serving at the counter one day when I went in - and quite grumpy he was too. I know nowt. about hi-fi etc... but even I knew Onkyo was a decent brand. 'Walk away' LOL.

You might want to read this first. Excellent brand but not a good effort compared to other players. Only gets 3 out of 5 stars. DVD play back better than the Blue Ray playback
Was Priced at RRP £400 when this review was done though.
A quick break away from the humour to ask if anyone has compared this to a PS3? I have an Onkyo (who???) amp but my ps3 does my main blu ray services

There are differences between all but the most basic standalone Blu-ray players and the PS3, but nothing you'd notice unless you're showing it on big full HD screen and even then probably only if it's a top end TV like a Pioneer Kuro or Panasonic VT20.
The biggest difference would be the up-scaling performance on SD DVD's.
EDIT: and the number of outputs on the back of course....

To be honest this specific Onkyo model now old anyway. You would actually find that even brands such as Samsung and LG's more up to date machines @ an extra 20 quid would actually be a better buy for your money.
So yr PS3 is safe for the moment. As Megalo said, yr not really gonna 'see' a great deal of diff until you go high end so it's all coming down to features which the Onkyo one in this specific deal is lacking.
Still a very solid player though, so an exceptional price if your not too bothered about features and want a nice Onkyo player under yr TV without paying a premium.

Great price and spec, just a shame that there's no USB connection so that you don't have to put stuff onto disc to make use of the divx and MP3 features. Was thinking of getting one of these for my bro, but would be a big pain having to write a load of discs instead of just connecting up a portable HDD.
Still a brilliant buy for people that just need a great blu-ray player and/or don't mind burning discs to watch divx/mp3s

Having read thru "LAUGHBORO" GUYs previous posts, he does advocate "walking away" quite alot. Personally I like my advice to come from someone who has some knowledge on the subject. But thanks for the laugh this morning mate, made my day.
not bad for unheard brand. Just need to goto watford:whistling:

Yeah, what a terrible shop alerting people through the internet to the amazing clearance deals some of their stores have :whistling:
I get annoyed with the Sainsburys, etc deals as you can't check stock online, you can't get through to the department instore to get a sensible answer as to whether stock is actually there, and they don't reserve items. Richer keep reasonable track on the website and are easy as to phone and reserve.

Another eclectic post from the world famous Loughboro Guy. If you're ever feeling a bit down, I suggest you just come on HUKD to look at his posts to cheer yourself up and have a laugh. They are always so well informed and all his arguments are so detailed its amazing!

Great price for a solid blu-ray deck. For me the lack of Blu-Ray Live and 5.1 outputs means that it wouldn't add anything to my system, but sure it would be a treat for anyone else who lives near a branch.

Funny stuff
But getting back on track - how does the Onkyo compare to, say a Sony 370? I have a Onkyo AV receiver - any advantage of getting a Onkyo BD player as well as opposed to another brand?
Thanks

Acc. to the review above, this is the exact same player as the Denon DVD-1800BD excepting a single button on the fascia (for Denon's Pure Direct Mode) and the Onkyo having an added optical digital output and a worse remote. Good buy if you can find one...

Bit like saying: Dont buy that Lexus car as its an unheard of brand, pay extra and buy a Ford instead.
That said, given how locked down BD is, and how involved Sony is in the format, I'd be inclined to prefer Sony so that any player I bought wouldn't be made unreasonably obsolete.

says the man who likes paying a premium for brand name without getting anything material in return. sony don't make crap stuff normally, but they are overpriced compared to similarly built and specced products. i like sony stuff, but most of the time i can buy something better and cheaper from an alternate known brand
the reason some people may not know onkyo is because they don't normally let places like comet and currys sell the products, in the same way as dolce & gabbana don't let tescos sell the clothing
most of the very best products of many things on this earth will be by brands that aren't commonly known to high street consumers, only to those with either money or an interest in an area

My thoughts exactly. Perhaps if you don't have a clue about AV, then that statement would hold true.
For anyone else, you'd know that Onkyo actually make very good amplifiers and receivers, and they're certainly not some naff supermarket brand.

Looks like a 90s tape deck and the LCD screen looks like it was stolen from an argos alarm clock. Good for hiding away in the bedroom I suppose at this price, but I'd rather fork out just a bit more and get something that performed as well but looked better also.

The humour of some of the people on this site is class man. I can't believe he even entertained the idea of putting a complaint in, thats the funniest thing ever HAHAHAHAHA!!!:-D
His posts are (unintentionally) amusing. Shame he's suspended, or in suspenders, or however I read that. It is a Saturday night  I'm off out to partaaay..!
By the way, Charlie Brooker says this about Avatar: "Avatar is rubbish. (I couldn't stand that tribe of pious, humourless, surly blue luddites. F*ck their stupid tree. I was cheering on the bulldozers)."
Im considering getting this but dont know much about blueray and i tend to like alternative brands.
Will it have compatibility issues.
Can it ever be updated.
in short is it worth getting or would my money be best spent elsewhere.
Only downside imo is the menu system i hate how you get 1080p playing kick ass blu rays and then the menu is like a BBC computer display just lacks quality and also functionality is a little bad as menus are difficult to navigate but the manual is pretty hot at sorting stuff out.
BD live will be every where and without it does seems to lack some experience for the BD you have brought.
lasted faultlessly for 22 years - used daily at 1-6 hours aday sometimes pushing it too - until i sold on ebay in perfect working order for decent money ....denon wouldnt make cars - theyd make tanks
but the denon amp was superb (replaced a technics amp) and worth the £400 then
big fan of denon amps but the onkyo had more features and was £600 cheaper....denon looked nicer though and prob sounds a little better
if onkyo made cars they would be a lexus...superbly made, does everything well, packed with lots of features not found on other makes in their class (i bought an onkyo 605 av amp 2.5 years ago for about £350 rrp £450 - if i bought an amp from denon or sony with the same features it would cost £1000 and whilst im sure the denon as they make exceptional amps would be a good match the sony wouldnt as their amps are garbage)
cant comment on their br players tho...to be fair though sony make good br players, but they skimp on features
fair enugh he made a michael fish style balls up, but enough has been said!
He's probably hanged himself now!
As for 'Please walk away' - Its one thing to give opinions, but thats a little more than that.
it would be a shame if he has walked way though. he was entertaining.
That's almost as funny as the first reply.
What happened to my original post?
wonder if its for the product itself or the humour ???
shame though that when ppl do post a good bargain, it can be slated due to 'hate england', "dont like group/show" etc.
Oh dear people in Loughborough are so out of touch.
Clearly you know nothing about quality.
LOL! What an excellent start to the day :-D

There is more to audio/video equipment than your usual High St brand names that make other electronics other than HI Fi.
just like
Linn , Harmon Kardon etc.... :whistling:
reminds me, a month or two ago, one of the guys in work (who knows nothing about hifi/audio) bought a Denon system and the other guys all told him they'd never heard of Denon.
I had to laugh and told them, they needed to do a little research, cause it was better than the household names they'd bought
She thinks that because she's heard of Wayne Rooney and apparently the bloke that cheated on Cheryl from xfactor also plays for England them she's an expert.
If you haven't heard of onkyo either then you can't be a keen gadget follower.
Can't be that uncommon if the search on this website alone brings up a page of other onkyo deals.
anyone know anything on this?
LG BD390 is now retired and is getting more difficult to find, and has been replaced by the LG BD570 which can be had for under £170 and so long as you don't need analogue sound, it does exactly the same as the 390 and has a few extra streaming services as well, Picassa and Accuweather.
I own the 390 and have set up a 570 for a friend and they both play/stream 720p/1080p mkv's and play any file size via ntfs on ext hdd fine (I have found mkv files when encoded in h264 or x264 with a profile 4.1 and AC3 or DTS 5.1 sound, means you should experience no problems in playback terms). of course there are plenty of other formats listed here that they can play.
but if I can get one, is the Onkyo worth the extra £20.00?
i wouldnt go via this site anyway, HotUkDeals is an unheard of website lol
Six pages on a minor RS item already!
Also, years ago Julian Richer was actually serving at the counter one day when I went in - and quite grumpy he was too. I know nowt. about hi-fi etc... but even I knew Onkyo was a decent brand. 'Walk away' LOL.
anyone know anything on this?
I'm still using my WDTV for MKV's and it's actually a recommended buy.
