Don't think this as a contract, think as if you are just buying HTC HD2 pay as you go for slightly higher price but for that slightly higher price you are getting 100 minute and texts, unlimited mobile internet and a booster package for 2 years. Just mobile internet (this phone will be half dead if you don't have mobile internet) for 2 years will cost you minimum £5x24=£120 if bought separately. A sim only contract for 100 text and minute with mobile internet could be worth minimum tenner a month.

Anyone know the best 12 month contract deals around for this phone?. I just cant deal with anything longer then a 12 month contract.

Wouldn't it be refreshing if these deals could be discussed without it degenerating into a HD2/iPhone/Nexus/WinMo battle?

I was drawn to this deal, but then noticed the 24 month contract. Not for me I'm afraid, but I can see it attracting those that don't care about such long terms.

I have abstained from the voting.

im on a vodafone 12 month deal at 40 per month

i live at lancaster university and get signal nowhere on campus

vodafone has billboards saying it is the only company to guarantee signal at home

thinking of taking them to court since i have no coverage most of the day, think i will win anything in small claims court?
humadoon to Sharpnel
12 Feb 10 #13
you should drag them but i thnk you can cancel your contract with them if he cant provide you requird service also VF has a wireless signal catcher type of thing (sure signal) which you can connect with broadband i get signal at ur home...

did you pay on top for ur phone as im with vf but they never offered me htc hd2 (only offer 50 quid a month on 12 month contract with free phone) i hate them so much..

Which college are you in? On most of campus vodaphone gets nothing, same with orange. In south-west I'm told you can get some signal though (I'm in county). Over the last 3 years general concensus is that o2 is the best for signal on campus, so that's the one I always reccomen people use! If it makes you feel any better though, vodaphone is the only network to get good network coverage in the sugarhouse :stuck_out_tongue:

Im actually looking to upgrade to this in April. Thankfully o2 have an amazing staff deal on it though!

£100 for handset, £20/mo for 1000min/1000txt/unlimited web, 12mo contract. Just a heads up in case you work for o2 and unaware of the staff deal on it.

Anyway, back to the phone. I've read tonnes of reviews and honestly, on paper it's one of the best phones in the world. The only place where it falls short is it's use of Windows Mobile 6.5, which honestly isnt all that bad. I got a wee shot of it the other day as my mate got his upgrade early - the phone feels solid (in a good way, like if you dropped it from a 10 story building it might only have a little scruff!) and feels very 'premium'. The screen is absolutely GORGEOUS - huge 4.3", bright, and the colours look brilliant. Screen is also very responsive and sensitive too - the only phone imo to rival the iPhone in that area. And even if you are like me and a bit 'iffy' about Windows Mobile, you can now dual boot it with Android OS! How cool is that? A phone that can dual-boot operating systems, awesome! Makes the WM argument null and void.

This phone is getting bought at upgrade time, unless HTC bring out the HD3 by then :P

12 Feb 10 #35
Yea expansys are exactly the cheapest I wouldn't say. I flashed my HD with the touch pro 2 ROM from XDA as it's quick and stable. Will look to upgrade to TouchFlow 3D once a stable build is released (that also doesn't drain the phone's life!)
sasha1
12 Feb 10 #34
@Suggs84: absolutely; although curiously the retail price on the HD (from expansys) is about the same as buying the HD2 outright from O2.
Have you gone with a 6.5.x rom on your HD? It's a breath of fresh air.
Suggs84
12 Feb 10 #33
As i said, I was simply explaining there are potentially other options other than contracts and PAYG deals.
sasha1
12 Feb 10 #32
@Suggs84 - I upgraded from the HD, another "obsolete" phone in that it's not sold any more!
The HD is a lovely phone, my previous incarnation of a physically great phone - however, the HD2 is a great improvement. Screen, speed an size make it really enjoyable.
Opera 10 is fabulous, loads almost instantly and is very usable on a large screen.
Makes a great ebook reader, film viewer, MP3 player and everything else.

As I said, games support isn't and will probably never be as good as iphone, and battery life still seems to be quite weak (I'm toying with different radios etc), but it's a beautiful piece of kit - worth buying from O2 for £370 if you can afford it.
Suggs84
12 Feb 10 #31
iphones are rubbish, please lets not have this conversation for the billionth time!

If it helps anyone out at all I've currently got the original HD (not HD2) which i bought sim-free as an unwanted contract phone for £250. I then got the sim-only deal from O2 with 800 free minutes and 1600 texts with the unlimited web bolt-on. With quidco cashback this all came out at a grand total of £140 a year ( = £11.66 a month) for an awesome phone which I don't use enough to get extra charges! Oh, and it's currently doubling as a dial-up modem!

Not for everyone but just another option.

I aint been funny but the iphone 16gb on tesco and nexus 1 which is out soon are only £80 more i would pay that. It is a lot of money to pay and 24 is a long contract.
The nexus 1 is about to launch and this phone will be become absolete shortly. The tesco is £320 upfont and £20 for 12 months 300mins and txt and umlimited internet. The nexus will similer on it will be open for you to chose ur network what suits u.
Dont get suckerd in to these 24 month contracts.
Johnboy_1975 to fergie1010
12 Feb 10 #29
Erm - the deal you claim is better, costs you £320 more, for 12 months less

At least you would be free to pursue another £20 contract at the end of the first 12 months (cue another £240 spend). So that's £560 dearer (with slightly etter terms) :w00t:

Nexus One has been available for months..I looked at this when considering the HD2 and the nexus was getting slated by the early adopters.

http://www.google.com/phone

I have an HD2 and I couldn't be happier. lovely web browsing experience. The phone works without a hitch and I can get pretty much any software that I need fro free although there are versions of paid software available too. The software is as upgradeable as your skill and nerve for voiding warranty allows... As someone else mentioned XDA developers forum is an excellent resource for this phone and if you have a problem there is a fair chance that someone has already released a fix for it. There is a fantastic community built around windows mobile devices and the various ways that you can tweak them.

I am tied into a 24 month O2 contract for £20ppm retention deal and I have no regrets....This phone has been called an i-phone killer and I feel that it is entirely justified. This thing has barely left my sight since I got it a month ago....well worth the money
sasha1
12 Feb 10 #28
@fergie1010 - what makes you think this phone will be obsolete shortly?

The internal processor (the SnapDragon) is the current leading edge in CPUs, including the Nexus 1.
The Nexus has better screen technology (AMOLED), but the HD2 has a bigger screen - again, for those who want a comparison, the screen itself is about the size of a whole iphone (and it's thinner too). And remember, the Nexus 1 and the HD2 are made by the same people, HTC.

The iphone will blow it away for games, (although with a working PS1 emulator, and pretty much every other old console emulator, and a Win98 emulator), you won't be without games to play.

If you want an "easy" phone, iphone is certainly the way to go.
But the Windows mobile phones are tweakable to your hearts content - do check out the xda devs roms just to see how the interface works - Microsoft (WM) would be dead without the work we do there.

Personally I'm not a fan of the capacitive screen, too sensitive for my many years of WM practise, but at the same time, it really brings a great, smooth feel to the phone.

Also, the HD2 is the only current WM phone out that (it is said) will be upgradeable to WinMob 7, if and when that arrives.

However, IMHO, I think nothing else on the market beats it for a media consumption device that fits in your pocket for a fair price - the Archos 5 is very similar, but fatter and heavier (although cheaper), and the new Dell 5 is also a snapdragon, but will cost about twice as much ($1000).
ai79man
12 Feb 10 #26
Boss if you buy any phone you have to put a SIM card in it. That will cost you something from your pocket (unless you are MP and have access to public funds  ). In this country we don't get good deals on PAYG SIMs so contract is best option IMO. Out of many contract I found this cheapest and out of many phone price £241 was sounding better for this high end phone. So I called it a deal.

Personally I have bought this in a blink but I am in first quarter of a new business contract from Vodafone on Touch Pro2 so I can't at the moment. I am quite tempted though.

Most people who have problems with Windows Mobile OS should try visiting xda-developer forums. They have fix for most of the problem and some even offer complete enhanced ROMs. In past I have used Dutty's (HD) and NRG (TP2) ROMs and my device is much more capable than the factory installed WMs.

WM OS is like Linux of PC OS (though Ubuntu has improved user experience a lot) and iPhone OS is like Windows OS of PC. In WM you have to tweak all the problem and fix it, so you can control it in the way u want it (like Linux) and this opens another world of opportunity to customize your handheld to an unlimited possibility. Unlike other phone OS (discounting Android) you always have to be in a restricted world, which we tend to get bored within first few weeks or at max in few months.

I tried out this phone plus a 3gs. To me the phone is just too big to be used everyday. I also didnt like windows but apart from that the screen is excellent and very quick. If you can put up with the size and windows go for it though imo the virgin deal is better. It will be fun when you can dual boot it with android. I stuck with the 3gs as it has everything i need in a phone (apart from a amoled screen).

I got a tmobile deal for £10 but did it through fonehouse and they gave me the phone cheaper so try them. It was the samsung galaxy for £60 100 texts 100mins unl internet and unl landlines which is a flexible booster.

Hot deal however I had this phone for a week then returned it. Let down by the OS. Very fiddly, had to edit registery keys to get the bluetooth to sync with my car kit. Also no voice control/dialing which is a step back for HTC devices.

£240 is cheaper than the phone costs on PAYG (isn't it?) and then you get the contract free as well......

Not 100% sure and will happily stand corrected, but believe the VF guaranteed signal at home service is via a hot-spot-type device plugged into to your (home) broadband and connects to phone via 3g. Seriously doubt this mini-hotspot is powerful enough nor intended to route the phone signal to anywhere other than the immediate area equivalent to one property (i..e. your home). If this is correct it is probably comparable in range to a broadband wireless router.

'Don't think this as a contract, think as if you are just buying HTC HD2 pay as you go for slightly higher price'

so I won't have to pay the monthly fees then? A contract is just that, something that's legally enforceable and not to be undertaken lightly.

That said, if it's the deal for you, go for it.

Looks pretty good to me for overall cost - great phone, windows os ok, but fab for movies etc. and multitasking!
Wish I hadn't got my crappy N97 (actually, not so bad with new firmware, but I do wish they would sort out the flipping internal memory problem! grrrrr.....)
