Hi all, in my opinion fireworks are brilliant! I love fireworks it brings the family together for special occasions and it's a old tradition.. Why should we stop selling fireworks all together and get them banned? That's pretty much giving in to these idiots! The same idiots who make young males car insurance unaffordable..there are a lot of young male drivers who are very sensible and the same goes for fireworks...lots of people have safe fun times with them...
I feel the best idea is a "fireworks permit" that costs say £100 or so and you have to be over 18 or 21 to have one...if you are caught messing around with them you loose the permit and get a fine. This could work.

Ive spent over £400 on fireworks from two all year round shops.
I spend months planning my display and making sure it is safe.
I dont want to go to a public display as I know what fireworks I want and how I want my display.
I really do not see a problem.
This being said I would not rule out anyone wanting to buy fireworks having to have undergone cat4 training.

A deal that encourages anyone to let fireworks off is not, in my opinion, a good deal. That's why I voted cold.
I'm off to a display tomorrow night at the local rugby club. It's £3 to get in (£1 for under 16's) and will be far better than the rubbish they sell in Tesco.
Because it's November 5th my dogs and cat will be inside the house in a room with the radio on so they will be fine. What is a problem is when people let fireworks off at all times of the day and night through October and November.
I'm looking forward to it

Anyone remember making a 'genie' when their bangers didn't go off properly (Why can't you get bangers any more ??). You poured all the gunpowder into a pile and then lit it causing a blinding flash and funny lights in your eyes from burning your retinas off.
I rember going to an organised display once when I was a teenager and one of the traffic light industrial sized fireworks didn't go off. Me and my mates waited till the end till everything was over and took it. We cut it open and lit it on my mothers drive, was like napalm - she nearly had a heart attack lol.

To all the people who think firework haters are being miserable, try living through this time of year with firework phobic pets. Then you might understand why fireworks make us miserable.
It makes me so angry when I read that someone had just let a firework off now. As responsible dog owners, we try to make sure our dogs are walked and sorted before the fireworks start and then d*cks like that set them off during the day. That is what caused my dogs phobia in the first place. So your five minutes of fun can turn into a lifetime of misery for somebody else. Nice!!

I'm with the "Fireworks are fun" camp. I've always had fireworks, my Mam and Dad bought them for me when I was a little kid and we'd have a display in our garden and then go out somewhere to see a bonfire and a professional display. To be honest the home ones are preferable, there's something nicer when you're doing it yourself.
And I'd hardly say you'll be keeping anyone up letting these things off, for a start it's dark by 6pm nowadays (We're setting ours off this year at 7)!
Lighten up you miserable so and so's and buy yourself a pack or rockets, some sparklers and a Catherine Wheel and enjoy the pyrotechnics.
Then again we could just go all out and ban lighters and matches too, stop the trouble before it starts.

This is no doubt a good deal as far as amounts and price goes, but on quality of fireworks its likely to be very poor. To put it simply supermarkets and the 'bulldog' brand shops that pop up everywhere this time of year, make the packaging as pretty as possible put the minimum amount of gunpowder inside them, families are suckered into buying them and their bonfire night consists of a few hisses and cracks. The best option in my opinion, is to look out for a retailer that sells Dancing Red Devil fireworks, i've been selling them through my ctn stores for the past 5 years never had a single complaint, people keep coming back for more and more, to put it into perspective people come from miles around to buy them as they are hard to find and very very good, especially the 'destroyer' rocket, which is about the size of a babies head and contains the maximum amount of gun powder legally allowed to be sold to the public, it gives off the most thunderous rapport you've ever heard, in fact last year it caused three car alarms to go off hahaha all part of the fun

Im doing a big display for "the" family and friends. I had a few hundred quid to spend on the display and have been doing my research. I nearly bought them from Tesco at full price....im so glad i didnt now.
I have just been to my local fireworks shop. I have literally been blown away, not just by the pricing but the quality of what you get. They showed me youtube videos of what they had. My Fam n Friends are in for a treat I tell ya!!! The main thing that did it for me is the fireworks are close to the legal limit of explosive that you can have.........big bang :-)
My advice is go to a local fireworks only dealer and get some "bangin" fireworks for that special display! Google Chase Lane Fireworks.
To all you firework sceptics, just be grateful you don't live near me.
I shall be celebrating the evening with such wonders as 'Maximum Overide', 'Earth Shaker' and 'Space Barrage', to mention a few.
We do this every year, on the 5th, make sure all our neighbours are happy (most of them turn up to watch) and we have a great time. In over 15 years, nothing bad has happened because we make sure we do things properly.
Just because a minority of reckless idiots do stupid things with fireworks, doesn't mean everyone should be prevented from having them.

Governments have been trying to ban Guy Fawkes Night since the early part of the Nineteenth century to no avail so it`s pointless to think about that now I suspect .
Incidentally all the public displays have been stopped round our way for several years now owing to the Health and Safety risks and the council no longer been willing to shoulder the risk - loved Bonfire Night when growing up as a kid during the Sixites and can see no reason why my grandchildren should be denied the pleasure today ...

The EPA is not likely to be used for one offs, but frequent use of fireworks from the same premises could be investigated and a Noise Abatement Notice then served.
The reason public events are not time restricted is that they can only occur under a licence and the licence (issued by the local authority) will condition the time of the display.
I hope you have fun on the 5th :-D

Saying that something would have been banned by now if it was wrong is a flawed argument. The law is a dynamic instrument that adapts to society as it changes. Fifty years ago working class people didn’t have spare income to spend on something as frivolous as fireworks. Anti-social behaviour has increased in recent years and sadly legislation is required where previously social standards maintained an acceptable level of behaviour. The need for control is demonstrated by the relatively recent introduction of The Fireworks Act 2003, The Fireworks Regulations 2004, The Fireworks (Amendment) Regulations 2004, The Fireworks (Safety) Regulations 1997, The Fireworks (Safety) (Amendment) Regulations 2004. Some would argue that removing the source of the fireworks themselves would have achieved a more desirable outcome.
You can’t “let them off whenever you like” for the same reason you can’t play music, operate noisy machinery or cause any other environmental pollution whenever you like.
Regulation 7 of the 2004 Act prohibits persons from using adult fireworks during night hours (namely between 11 pm and 7 am) but exceptions allow such use until 1 am on the nights of the Chinese New Year, Diwali and New Year's Eve and until midnight on 5th November. However the Environmental Protection Act 2003, and various other statutory instruments relating to noise could be used if you are causing a nuisance.
Where I live is just fine thanks, but I don’t live near someone that thinks he can let fireworks off whenever he likes!
Grimmie75
26 Oct 09#32
I have no difficulty what so ever!
Personally, it's a must to be done on the 5th every year, and yes my neighbours are aware.
Fortunatley I have no control over the other days when my neighbours or friends would like to have their parties, but if it was deemed socially irresponsible by the mass, then I would assume someone who has the power would have enforced it by now. And if I was forced to go to public displays only, then so be it!
As far as I am currently aware, you can indeed let them off when you like, so again, it's down to responsibility. I think 11 pm is the deadline too, for big celebratory days.
Bigger fish to fry if you're on your soap box mate.....one or two admittedly try to spoil or tarnish for the mass...
If your postcode is that bad - move!

26 Oct 091#31
You seem to have trouble grasping the logic behind the objection to fireworks being available to the public.
Let's assume that you are considerate, sensible, and safe when you have your party. I have no reason to doubt you wouldn't be. However your party will, of course, be on November 5th because you are considerate and you are celebrating Guy Fawkes on the correct date. It will, of course finish by 8pm because you don’t want to disturb young kids from their sleep. And you will, of course, have told all your neighbours so that they can bring their pets in and keep them safe for the twenty or so minutes your display of cheap supermarket fireworks will last.
Your neighbours however are having a party the day before because they can't wait, some people have them the week before, some the week after, some a bit late, some very late, some when they are p1ssed and haven't got a clue what the time is.
Add to this our friends celebrating Eid at the end of September, Diwali in the middle of October (which lasts 5 days) and hopefully you can realise that just the “considerate” private parties are causing weeks and weeks of disturbance in many towns.
Then add to this the fact that kids (or sub-normal adults) get hold of fireworks and let them off at anytime of the day or night and in a dangerous way and your statement "My neighbours don't mind one night a year when I arrange a little firework display" just shows you don’t understand the extent of this problem in some places.
Grimmie75
26 Oct 09#30
My neighbours don't mind one night a year when I arrange a little firework display, just like I don't mind there occaisional late night parties.

Then again we could just go all out and ban lighters and matches too, stop the trouble before it starts.
they only sell them once a year!
anyone with half a brain can see that the £40 ones should be £20.
and this thread.... ffs people lighten up!!!!
Anyway, why bother even celebrating the night? Guy Fawkes failed....now if he had actually blown up parliament, that would be reason to celebrate  :-D
Supermarkets should stick to selling baked beans. It's crazy you can by explosives in Tescos.

Voted hot from me.
I was the first to love them that makes me less gay than everyone else
Incidentally all the public displays have been stopped round our way for several years now owing to the Health and Safety risks and the council no longer been willing to shoulder the risk - loved Bonfire Night when growing up as a kid during the Sixites and can see no reason why my grandchildren should be denied the pleasure today ...
Voted HOT.
One night a year we have friends and family round to celebrate Guy Fawkes night and in the 23 years I've done this we've had no problems, no burns, no irate neighbours nothing but baked potatoes and sausage and stuffing cobs :-D Why go round banning something when 99% of the people us them responsibly and have a great time?
You must make a wonderful understanding neighbour :w00t:
I'm gonna buy a few packets on way home tonight and let them off whenever i feel like it. Probably save some to let them off at xmas and new years too - bargain!
That said, it must be hard for the poor junkies on bonfire night as they keep knocking on the wrong doors expecting to get their stuff
its only once a year like christmas so dont grow old and miserable before your time :stuck_out_tongue: and let kids be kids if you dont like fireworks dont buy them but dont complain about them cause there not going away :-D
The reason public events are not time restricted is that they can only occur under a licence and the licence (issued by the local authority) will condition the time of the display.
I hope you have fun on the 5th :-D
I found that a bit strange also, no restriction on dates for public use, and 11pm, anyway....Roll on the fifth, mine will be between 7 - 9.
For us sensible ones, it's once a year which brings fun and joy when acting responsible.
Oh quick, someone at the end of your road is revving the car to loudly on the way to work, at this time, quick, go get them tiger!
You're being noisy, inconsiderate feckwits who think that your own need for self-gratification is above your neighbours' right to have peace and quiet:p
Wake up FFS. Nothing wrong with fireworks, its the nuggets that are abusing them that need to be dealt with.
What he said.
We have a great family night doing our own thing in our own garden with shop bought fireworks.
Public displays are the way forward. And they look so much better than sh1tty home fireworks anyway.
Grow up and go to a public display:p
Once went to a display and got showered with gunpowder and also attacked by flaming lanterns.
Worst thats happened at home was one of the fireworks fell over and started shooting at us and the tree stump burnt down oh and the fence caught alight. But thats it I swear.
Especially when you consider the millions of people not messing around and having a good time with them.
Cheap fireworks = hot always.
