In the 1960's this would have been the gold standard in the household budget, sausages in lard or suchlike. The kids back then were a lot fitter than they are today.
Foodstuffs were rationed in the 1950's - no fruit juice in the shops for instance. So in the space of 60 years a lot has changed and not necessarily for the better, although mostly so.

Thankfully most REAL fish & chip shops still do. In the Yorkshire counties, it is still predominant.
Further south it is getting rarer :-(
Many of the award winning fish & chip shops stil do too.
Rick Stein's Fish & Chip shop in Padstow uses beef dripping, as that's what proper fish & chips are fried in. Other stuff is Fried Fish with fried potatoes, not Fish & Chips.
One thing is apparent on this thread, precious few people have the faintest idea what they are eating, and what they are pumping into their kids - while suasages in lard are not the most visually appealing thing I have ever laid eyes on, once fried in the lard, sensibly drained off, it will end up as a high fat food, full of saturated fat too - but then again, so is a Domino's pizza, or any number of household name frozen foods.

You folks are a howl a minute. :?
The stuff you put in your stomach is just pure mystery! No wonder food manufacturers can get away with selling slop that one time used to get fed only to pigs, and put a premium price on it.
Of course it's fully cooked, it has spent ages in an autoclave - a huge pressure cooker - all canned goods are cooked that way, more fully cooked than it would get in a domestic oven. It's so fully cooked it's as near sterile as makes little difference, that's WHY they can it, so it can keep for months, maybe even years!
Cook a chicken in a pot with just water and let it go cold, and the gelatine released from the bones & connective tissue forms jelly too, just like that in a trifle, only not fruit flavoured. The skin definitely won't be crisp, but for all it's visual lack of appeal, the flesh will most likely be very tender when you peel that off; and while it seems an odd way to buy chicken nowadays, and I would throw away a fair bit of the fat, skin and gelatine as well as bones before eating it, it definitely doesn't disgust me, any more than a potato covered in soil before I clean and cook it would disgust me!

That is true.... but I'd rather eat butter :-D
About all the deep fried mars bars posts, I have one very occasionally and they are delicious. Try a small (fun size) one, and serve with vanilla ice cream. Makes a very nice dessert  Crisp on the outside, with warm melted caramel and chocolate inside, with ice cream. Delicious :-D
Years ago, I used to work as the fryer in a chippie in Springburn, Glasgow as a student in my summer break. I only used lard to fry, but I remember my customers even asking to have their pizzas fried in the lard :whistling: I fried everything in the lard - pizza, meat pies, everything..... :whistling: Working with it daily, it put me off so I never ate any of it myself.

no wonder there's an obesity crisis looming, why can't healthy food be this cheap!? can't believe it costs less to raise a pig and feed it then hire someone to butcher it and stuff it in a tin can with lard and get a label put on it, then it costs to have said pig deficate in a field where you have planted a bunch of seeds and then pull up whatever grows and shove it in a plastic bag.

Strange that when lard was popular there was no obesity crisis.
Wish I could find a graph I once had that showed the increase in popularity of so called 'healthy' spreads and oils, which oddly matches the increase in obesity and heart disease in this country.
The problem we have is too many people with too little real knowledge preaching what's good and bad to eat.
Butter IS better for you than most margerines, lard IS better for you than most so called 'vegetable oils'.

My point wasn't mainly aimed at the relative unhealthyness of this offer or offers like it, my point was more the premium slapped onto foods that are found in the healthfood sections.
though you have a good point and it is well made, but back when butters and lards were popular, you actually had to get up to change the television channel and on a cold day you had to sacrifice a goat or whatnot to guarantee your car would actually start up in the morning, and those too could be contributing factors.

What's next Kosher Lard?
'wrestlers sausage in lard' as long as it isn;t hot lard
sounds more like something them annoying rugby lot would get up to :-)
Sausages in Lard does sound like something they would eat up there, except it would probably have a silly name like Barm brawn or something.
Rep :-D
Disgusting
this was on it too
edit: in my defence I didn't read the post above me
not the place really :x
this is what happens to santas helpers when they retire
BTW Rick Stein's chippy in Padstow cooks the chips in dripping IIRC.
Another fav for the bbq is haloumi cheese...lovely stuff.
i would take that back to the shop for sure !
that would stop her coming every week
im glad i havnt had a curry yet ! [/SIZE]
Cheese Whiz is essential for a Philly Cheese Steak baguette!
Foodstuffs were rationed in the 1950's - no fruit juice in the shops for instance. So in the space of 60 years a lot has changed and not necessarily for the better, although mostly so.
did you actually buy them to eat? :o
I've actually been to that very place (Pats King of Steaks) in Phillidelphia.
It was SO good!
That said, I'm still not going to buy them....
have fun
Surely good for the atkins diet
More like heart attack in can...
must be from abroad
oh ive googled it, and its a link from a website, even bad, the meat in the tin is mechaniicaly recovered, so...... that even worse then first thought......... http://www.bushcraftuk.com/forum/showthread.php?p=493849
but voting hot for the price...should keep the odd few gutworms happy!
Never heard of that shop, I bet it is up north only.
Sausages in Lard does sound like something they would eat up there, except it would probably have a silly name like Barm brawn or something.
eh like you dont have unhealthy people in England ? - Rik Waller springs to mind and johnny vegas - pure health freaks that have probably this kind of stuff every day
Classic! Johnny Vegas, that well known Southerner!
:whistling:
Keep it up people!

Voted hot for giving me the Friday night giggles:)
And don't the sausages have this stuff inside them anyway?
Might buy some just to see what they're like.
I'll be avoiding those 'canned fish mouths' though.
They'll probably give me nightmares! Anyone know when Jaws is on next?
How about some of the following.
Don't knock 'em....they were great in a bit of bread with a fried egg on a cold hillside
I'm gonna get some for old times sake. BTW - you don't eat the lard, it's purely to cook them in and you can fry your egg in it as well.
i lived in glasgow for 6 months [i escaped] and up there it's ... well you can't describe it.
you dont eat it when its solidified its used to preserve dem sausages in a state of freshness ;p
hope none of you drink the brine from hotdogs as well...
i was brought up on chips cooked in lard, next best thing to beef dripping for chips
This is how its done by the pro's.
Pretty sure with your such woeful humour, combined with a mundane, victorian and racist attitude, led to you being booted out of Glasgow.
I would suggest your "escape" is very much Glasgow's gain.
Was brine too expensive?
theyve got super food these days
Vegas born in St Helens
Prescott born in Prestatyn, brought up in Elesemere Port
Waller born in Gillingham
Seriously, if it's a good batter I think this an amazing dessert. Was served with a little cream and berry coulis. Think the Twinkie was my favourite though... just like a cream filled donut.
One thing is apparent on this thread, precious few people have the faintest idea what they are eating, and what they are pumping into their kids - while suasages in lard are not the most visually appealing thing I have ever laid eyes on, once fried in the lard, sensibly drained off, it will end up as a high fat food, full of saturated fat too - but then again, so is a Domino's pizza, or any number of household name frozen foods.
yet todays kids are severly overweight?
fast food joints, snack food.....junk
bring back the healthy britain .....bring back lard!!!!
Southerners, you lot eat the same sh*te as we do up north, so stop making out you're any better, you pretentios t***s:x
simple fact is they don't do it as much because the fat goes rancid quick compared to oil.
product suffers.
and howevers bashing glasgow can **** off apart from newcastle its the only place i'd think of living.
rather have the plesent friendly company of an overweight weegie than a skinny arrogant southerner any day
b.t.w.
My Dad loved lard and would get a special order from our butcher whenever he could. He died at 60 after half a dozen heart attackes and 2 triple bypass ops. So for all those saying "it never did us any harm" its just a numbers game and those that it did harm are no longer here to tell the tale. p.s. he was a southerner.
preach over...
Lard is still commonly used to manufacture soap.
Never knew that! Does that mean eating a bar of lard will give you a good cleaning out? I imagine anyone eating any of this stuff might need it. :stuck_out_tongue:
Absolutely gutted they had no sausages in lard. :x
Anyone send me some?
