Wow, it's a good job people don't sterotype or generalise on these forums, isn't it? I don't protest about anything, I don't go on any greenpeace forums, I just buy free range and I don't think this is a good deal, and don't want to be insulted. That's all and fair enough, I think.

Wow .....moved on a bit but still a lot of comments that lead me to belive its better to just go and buy the chicken and not debate it as at least then you dont have to put up with those people who I can only equate to:
Those paid for charity canvesars who accost you for a direct debit so they walk away with 30 pieces of silver for whatever charity is paying them the most to be champions of their cause.

Actually I feed the dog on cooked chicken. White meat is very easy to digest for an old dog.

I resent having to boil my own chicken for £2.70 when they are selling them ready cooked for £2. But there you go.

Animal welfare relies on human morality. Fortunately most people in civilized society understand the difference between right and wrong and causing unnecessary suffering to an animal is wrong.

Could we all afford to eat meat without intensively reared chickens? Yes.

Do you actually make the connection between animal welfare and stuffing your fat ignorant faces with greasy mass produced vile chicken from Tescos? Sadly, no, not all of you do.

This food is rubbish quality, and the economic impact is that it promotes greedy retailers into exploiting low grade food from any source (from any where in the world) creating profit for their shareholders while continuing to destroy British farming. So expect next year’s supermarket chicken to be lower quality than this year, and so on.

That's why people continue to post negative comments on this thread.

because i heard some people saying when they were in the queue!

and how much cost did they incur in getting to tesco? offset that against the saving and the lost time from your life.....

i just mean the time it takes to get to tesco, get parked if you go by car, fight your way to the deli, stand for at least 45 mins hoping you'll get one, then do it all again to get home! for what? £2.59?

this is ridiculous. at my local tesco last night at 4.30, there was a sign at the deli saying "chickens ready at 5.15, max 2 per customer". people were already waiting in a queue! we continued shopping and walked past again at 5.15 where there was about 30 people standing. the oven only holds 24! standing for at least 45mins to save £2.59. is everybody really that skint, or just greedy?

to make a deliberate trip to the store and stand all that time in all that hussle and bussle to only buy a chicken and save such a small amount really beggars belief. get a life.

Why do you two have to descend to personal insults and jibes?

My avatar has nothing to do with who I am, apart from the fact that I like mullets and moustaches

As regards the contradicting myself, I can't see how. I merely point out that I couldn't really care less how my chicken is treated, but in principle I wouldn't have an issue with free range, if it wasn't so expensive.

You are both coming across quite badly in this thread and seem to be trolling, especially when resorting to personal insults

Will I pay the extra: no
Haha!! how to contradict yourself in 2 sentences!!
Might as well just say if you sprinkle enough sugar onto poo I'll eat it!

thanks for your 2pence worth, as worthless to me as the chemically induced, hormone reared chicken meat people are getting excited about.
would people put cheap petrol into their prized brand new car if they knew it was going to cause problems due to being very poor grade? no 99% wouldn't! yet people leap at this cheap meat like it was a free lunch. you will get what you pay for. people may do as they like I'm only speaking for myself!

2 May 09 #329
Surely everyone should be using super plus unleaded then, rather than standard? Besides I've eaten much worse than this for over 30 years and I'm still fine, would you care to quantify exactly what problems I am going to experience? If you can show me a scientific link between eating chickens cared for in different ways and my health I'd be interested.

And yet again, for those who can't add up, over 50% off an item that most people appear to want is a bargain.

EDIT: Out of interest, why are people so against this deal still posting here saying how bad it is? You're like bloody mormons, turning up where you're not wanted trying to tell us all how right you are. 1 cooked chicken that can do a family meal for £2 = bargain

Already sold out of the £2 sized chickens in my local store :-(

Won't be getting any more in they said, not the £2 ones.

Something tells me that these aren't the £4.19 ones that were reduced, but were a special purchase ... of a somewhat smaller size. Would be interesting to know what weight the "medium" ones come up at when they go back to selling those & the large ones next week.
Dom10
1 May 09 #305

As someone said earlier:- "I went to my butchers once and asked for a 1kg chook, he quoted me £12 as a price, I left...... the co-op were selling the same for £4, nuff said! Tastes the same, just didn't have that dirty butcher's money grabbing hands all over it" and as asda smart price chicken is £2 a kg for an uncooked chicken I'd say yes that sound about right. Check your prices before voting cold as you're wrong.

So the normal price is 4 pound 19, is that also for a 800 - 1kg large chicken? Or would the normal price of 4 pound 19 actually buy you a proper large size chicken of perhaps nearly txice the size of this deal. If so then deals not hot.

Taste and smell are entirely specific to the individual, what tastes good to you WILL taste rubbish to some others. Your opinion counts for nothing when you can't experience what others do, if someone says they like it then you have absolutely no way of knowing how much they like it or how good it tastes.

e.g. mushy peas. Taste like garbage, I'll throw up if you put them on my plate. Yet people buy them, why?

The taste thing is clearly very subjective. Had one of these before the offer and it tasted fine. For £2 I would say you're getting more than your money's worth.

If it was served up in a gastropub I'd be underwhelmed and if it was served in a restaurant I'd refuse to pay.

But as a £2 'ready meal' it's darn good value.

I hope you're not suggesting there is no child poverty because if so it's a very ignorant comment and seems like you just want to deny it exists and turn a blind eye to the problem. I'm sure in this country there is no child sex industry and such things, comments like that are just obtuse. Of course there is bad parenting but that has no reflection on child poverty. Bad parenting there is no excuse for :x

poor chickens put onto this earth for the sake of £2. I'm starting to think that vegetarianism isn't a bad idea after all, or just eating fish, after all fish are stupid.
tek-monkey to toejamandearl
30 Apr 09 #257
Nope, put on this earth to eat. £2 is merely what is being paid for them, it has no bearing on their worth. Also most would never exist if not bred for food, and would die at the hands of a predator instead (VERY few animals so low on the food chain get even close to old age). If we were all vegans even cows wouldn't exist, we'd need their grazing land for crops and we'd be worried they'd eat it. Pigs might survive, but doubtful as the wolves would have had them because we'd not have hunted the wolves for killing our livestock (as we wouldn't have any). In fact not killing animals for our own ends would mean no pelts to keep our ancestors warm, so even we may not be here. Certainly if we hadn't used animals to our own ends civilisation would not be as advanced as it is now.

Anyway its a chicken, its cheap, its already dead and I don't care for its life story.

why the hell is this so hot when people are weighing them in and coming up with 800-900g per chicken? Surely this should be up before trading standards if they are advertising them as LARGE. Do Large amounts of growth hormones / antibiotics count then ?

You can get free range for the same price per kg from asda / morrisons lol

I think you'll find one of the coldest deals ever was KFC chicken at about -1200 degrees.

Then again, this chicken is one step up on the food scale from kfc which isnt saying much tbh ;-)

This deal does explain why the morrisons food deal with 8 sausages for 27p is so hot..............:w00t:

Yes. It's intensively reared chicken at any price and it's basted in fat and it tastes awful. People might be getting used to it because they eat it a lot, but it doesn't actually taste like chicken.
tek-monkey
30 Apr 09 #234
Was it still so terrible at £4 though, because earlier you seemed more concerned on price pp/per meal. Its still the same item it was last week, only cheaper. This chicken is still better than an awful lot of food out there, at least its the whole bird so you don't just get the mechanicaly recovered bits you find in cheap chicken nugggets for example.

As I've said before, this is a deals forum and this is a deal. If it was a greenpeace forum or one on sustainability I could understand the responses, but this forum is about cheap stuff. This is cheap, the price paid does not affect the quality of the chicken. Its not like they got some extra small cages in, and piled in extra chicken poo, just to make sure these birds were worse quality than they were last week. Its a loss leader, nuff said.

EDIT: Besides, if you're not a vegan animals die for you to live. Drink milk? Then you support the veal industry. Way to go you baby cow torturer

Take your debate somewhere else, because you've made your point.

You've had your say and you won't change the minds of the thousands of peple who are buying the same cooked chicked that they paid £4+ for last week, for just £2 this week (a 50% saving).

That's what this thread is about, not people too poor to buy anything else.
bigsky
30 Apr 09 #232
Pointless post.

In the meantime.......

Tesco's, the company you work for, is selling whole cooked chickens for £2. Now some people think that's a bad thing, but the majority of the people on this thread think that's a good thing.

However out of that group that think it's a good thing some of them are coming up with a range of reasons why they voted hot:

1. Some are too poor to be able to afford to pay more for food.
2. Some hate animals and so knowing they are suffering to produce food makes them feel good.
3. Some don't even think chickens feel pain.

I'm concerned to live in a country where any of these situations may arise and addressing such issues of poverty and ignorance is not pointless for me.

People are missing the point that nobody "came into this thread " to criticise, it was brought up on the first page that anyone who cared about free-range were 'idiots'. It's one thing to jump into a thread and criticise (there are hundreds of threads on dairy/meat that isn't free range but they don't all insult people who think differently) and quite another thing to defend your point of view and express your opinion about the value of a deal.

30 Apr 09 #227
Ethical debates are rarely as simplistic as right or wrong. There are a range of positions in between. I have, in my posts, tried to convey just that:

A £2 cooked Tesco's chicken is about the worst possible example mass produced meat on the high-street. But there are plenty of alternatives, not just organic (and expensive) ones. You don't have to choose between two extremes.

Its not about who's right or wrong, in an ethical debate its impossible to tell as it depends on your own moral code. Its about this being an offer for a less than half price item that people obviously want. I don't go into iphone threads calling people apple fanboys and moronic sheep because they want the latest shiny off-white piece of junk, because the value of a deal is relative to the individual. If you want it, and its a good price, then its all gravy.

mmmm, gravy. Would go well with some chicken about now...

Can I just point out that it's never been scientifically proven that chickens can feel pain. They are as likely to experience fear and discomfort as a daffodil or a blade of grass.

So people should stop worrying about the 'moral arguments' because these chickens are safe and you wouldn't worry about walking on a lawn, would you?

You're totally of course entitled to your opinion, but what you've said there is actually just untrue.

Bateson 1991, Weary et al, 1998 and Wood et al, 1991 to name a few. Anyway, personally it's not the chickens being 'happy' that I'm concerned about, it's that standard chickens have much higher death rates, almost all have burns to their feet, are sitting in their own faeces all day, are artifically grown and pumped full of antibiotics and hormones and I don't wanna eat that.

I'm not trying to convert anyone, but people on here need to stop acting like they're right and that anyone else's opinion is nonsensical. I have a right to express my opinion, just like you have to express yours, and neither of us deserve to be patronised or insulted.

Three of these are a pure matter of opinion that you are totally free to have, they depend mostly on your personal definition of ethics.

However, regarding the free range chicken tasting better statement, one could test it using double blind tests. Note that just buying an expensive free range chicken, cooking it carefully (because it was expensive), tasting it and then saying: "Ah, this chicken taste better" is not a valid test since you have conditionned yourself to deciding that it taste better.

I am awfully amused for example at the earlier poster that claimed these chicken taste s**t then later states that he has never nor would never buy any...

So your problem is that it costs too little compared to a can of coke, WTF? Tesco don't force people to shop there, the fact that they make these profits shows people choose to. I know they screw over their suppliers, thats called business, and if there was money in free range then the suppliers would sod Tesco off and go that route. They don't though, why? Because they still make a living themselves.

As for the Tesco profit levels, why single them out? Why can't they make a profit, yet the oil companies can? For that matter, why has my tax paid to bail out banks that earned billions in the past, and continually screw me over? And what the hell has this got to do with the price of a chicken?

This is a loss leader, an ancient technique to get punters into shops. Whats the problem?

EDIT: Oh yeah, its not 50p a meal though is it? What about veg? And gravy of course. Then of course there's tax on that minumum wage so its not really 50p every 5 mins is it? In fact it would only be £5.73/ph if you are over 22 anyway, those younger get less (£4.77/£3.53).

Is it really such a difficult point to understand that some people just want cheap meat? If it passes all food regs then its food, and its cheap. Its still a chicken, however it was reared, and its cheap. Focus on that point, as you seem to be missing it. CHEAP.

I thought the whole point of this site was getting the most of what you want for the least money? Just cos you don't want this doesn't mean others won't.
bigsky to tek-monkey
29 Apr 09 #164
Come on tek-monkey; there's cheap.... and there's too cheap.

A £2 chicken will feed a family of four. That's 50p person per main meal portion!

How right can that be? How much is a portion of cheap chicken compared to a can of coke, a newspaper, a packet of cigarettes, a pint of beer?

Everyone can afford more than 50p per meal. At minimum wage you would earn 50p in five minutes. So you could buy one of these every 20 minutes. That's faster than you could eat them!!!

£2 for a chicken that has to be hatched, fed, housed, slaughtered, plucked, gutted, packed, labelled and then transported to a supermarket where it is cooked, repacked and labelled, and still contributes to a £3 BILLION pound annual profit for Tesco. That's just wrong!

shame its not free range BUT beggers can't be choosers :?
bigsky
29 Apr 09 #161
Is this really such a difficult point for some people to understand?
There are not JUST two extremes in food production!

Some people seem to think that Tesco two quid ready cooked chicken is great because it's affordable and the only alternative would be a £12 quid bird hand reared by totally organic methods.

Food production is as diverse as any other market. Not being into mass produced cheap food doesn't instantly make you a carrot munching, sandal wearing hippy! Indeed many people that express concern about animal welfare find that they have genuine concerns about purely organic farming too.

Food producers need to make decisions regarding animal welfare and commercial productivity. Some vaccinations, mite control etc may well exempt them from "organic status" but it keeps their animals healthy. What it doesn't mean is they then need to keep all their birds in cramped conditions on extreme fat and growth diets for 5 weeks and then slaughter them.

As for the fertilizer thread that seems to have sprung up you should know that overuse of "nice clean sterile fertilizer" has polluted rivers with nitrates wiping out fish and other wildlife and has left soil laden with dangerously high levels of arsenic and cadmium.

So what would you prefer on your food? Arsenic and cadmium? Or a bit of organic fertiliser?

Who said Halal was ethical? It's certainly no more humane than a bolt or electrocution and many would say less humane.
And the point about free range isn't the way they die but the way they live. That they're being bred to be killed doesn't mean the should be kept in the most cost effective way possible throughout their lives.
Free range chicken has nothing to do with organic veg, though they tend to get lumped together along with long hair and sandal wearing Apple fanboys.

And happier, healthier chickens taste better in a bap.
sorry if i sound like im trying to argue with you, im not..

they all come to the same death - electrocuted and slit their throat. if you want your chicken to be killed more ethically, why not try halal? (im not muslim and dont eat halal/free range).
the fact that the chicken can run round all day makes extremely little (although i do admit some) difference to meat grade quality, as you pay usually per kg of meat anyway. fair enough, the food its fed makes the difference, but free range is nonsensical.
Its like organic..... who really wants their vegetables to be sprayed with horse and pig sh** as fertilizer (full of bacteria- 1billion per gram of poo i believe), i know i would prefer some nice clean sterile synthetic fertilizer...

i must confess that I'm so sick of hearing people talking about only eating organic food and free range chickens, - coz the rest is just rubbish...blah blah blah...

I mean, we should be rather thankful that we even have meat to eat, whereas, in many places in the world, people don't even have even food to eat.

Therefore, I will definately buy those chickens, with a thankful heart.

i can understand your opinions on animal welfare, and thats why you eat free range. some people only eat it because they think its a lot better quality.
on the other hand, i strongly disagree with the organic stuff... at the end of the day, organic food is literally filthy. i wouldnt give children it.
Melana
27 Apr 09 #124
I used to be a vegetarian for ten years, so I've tried both sides of the welfare argument. I have to say, I feel so much more passionate now, eating meat, the logic being that being a vegetarian doesn't really discourage anything. It doesn't say why you don't want to eat meat, and it doesn't differentiate between the places that sell intensively farmed meat and those who choose to sell better welfare meat. So in buying only freedom food + food, I'm actively supporting the places that do care about animal welfare, and not supporting an industry I disagree with. I'm not even a huge animal fan, but just looking at it economically, our British farmers have to farm their animals to higher standards of animal welfare according to government standards, but the government doesn't impose the same things on imported meat. So basically, if we keep buying imported bad welfare meat, our British farmers really are screwed.

And as for the way they die, it's incredibly humane. The shock is instant and painless and therefore they don't feel their actual death. And I much prefer organic. I don't want to be eating chemicals and antibiotics, and almost all compost is made from poo anyway, in some form  Yay poo. I'm also a student, so I have no money either. M&S and Waitrose both do 8 freedom food+ sausages for under a pound, which is cheaper than a lot of standard stuff.

So yeah. I'm not telling anyone what to buy, I personally just like to support industries I share the values of, as the more we buy, the more we encourage those values. Oh and it's bloody delicious, and in my own opinion, far far better than standard chicken.

I got a freedom food chicken at Morrisons the other day for 3.69, not on offer. That's cheaper than this standard chicken originally was, and a much better deal than a standard chicken for £2. It's not all about the money, it's about the value for what you're getting.

sorry if i sound like im trying to argue with you, im not..
i was just wondering, what do you believe is so 'right' about free range?
they all come to the same death - electrocuted and slit their throat. if you want your chicken to be killed more ethically, why not try halal? (im not muslim and dont eat halal/free range).
the fact that the chicken can run round all day makes extremely little (although i do admit some) difference to meat grade quality, as you pay usually per kg of meat anyway. fair enough, the food its fed makes the difference, but free range is nonsensical.
Its like organic..... who really wants their vegetables to be sprayed with horse and pig sh** as fertilizer (full of bacteria- 1billion per gram of poo i believe), i know i would prefer some nice clean sterile synthetic fertilizer...

EDIT; im not targeting you by the way, just people in general who believe this stuff

What's it got to do with you how he, or anyone else, spends his money. We're of a similar ilk in that we don't have money to throw around so we have the basics, unless you're suggesting that having a PC is supposed to be a luxury and/or for the upper classes. We can afford what we all enjoy which is certain things like having a PC, TV days out etc but only because we bargain hunt and eat cheaply. Put it another way for you, to get some of the bargains we even use this computer so in a way it pays for itself. Your priorities aren't the same as everyone elses and you're narrowminded. Plus the saying you get what you pay for isn't a fool proof saying, how can you guarantee that paying £2 more mean it has been treated any better. Why do you presume he thinks alot about his mobile/laptop purchases other than the price? I know I don't as long as it works.

Aha, the other defence used by the "can't be bothered to think about this" brigade: "Free range is expensive so I have to eat cheaply produced food."

There aren't just two types of chicken in the world, cheap ones and free range ones!

Why oh why can't you put as much thought into the food you put in your body, and your children's bodies, as you do to say your laptop or your mobile phone?

You don't have to buy free range: Just get something that's not produced in such terrible conditions resulting in a really poor grade product. Get the best you can afford. I bet you do that for other things you comment on in HUKD or are you sitting there in the cheapest possible clothes you could find typing this on a 10 year old PC you found in a skip?

What a silly boy,

I do care about animals but care more that my family get a decent meal on the table,by saving money on these chickens means basically they can have 2 instead of one, clearly you either don't have a family or are on a high wage.

I could I suppose sell my tv so we can eat free range for a few weeks, hang on...I will get the phone cut off and sell the car,if I do that we can perhaps have free range eggs as well.
tek-monkey
27 Apr 09 1 #97
So we should lose our net connection and eat free range chicken? Sod that, its all about priorities. I spend every penny I earn every month. Between rent/bills/food/transport I need to make cutbacks somewhere, so cheap chicken = good.

I still maintain this is a forum for deals, not ethics. Why are you even here if its not about saving money? This is less than 50% of the original price for the same product, bargain.

I have developed this amazing tactic of only visiting threads that offer deals on products I like, which both cuts down my time spent here and means I don't get bored reading about things I don't have an interest in. Having used an iphone for example I think they suck, so I no longer visit iphone threads. Maybe I should actually be visiting every thread on them and informing the others of how crap they are instead?

If you are contributing to this forum from the comfort of your own home on a PC with a broadband connection you can afford more than two quid for a chicken!!! I am so fed up with people hiding behind poverty as an excuse for them not actual facing up to making a moral decision. 1 x £2 quid chicken = 4-6 portions of meat plus bones for stock or soup. That's significantly less than 50p per portion. Unless you are homeless and sending in your posts from a free internet connection at the public library you can afford a bit more than 50p for a main meal for you and your family. To the people that post that they hate animals and don't care about their welfare then congratulations, at least you are honest. But to everyone that keeps doing this "boo-hoo, I am so poor, I would like to buy decent chicken but all I can afford is this" routine, I tell you you might be kidding yourself, but you are not kidding me.

27 Apr 09 #86
They're warnings and that's all. It doesn't mean that everyone who eats it will be ill or die. The government are simply acting to protect themselves by banning.

It's far from free once you've paid for seeds, compost etc but does save you money. I grow my own because it tastes much better and is cheaper. Picking a tomato and eating it immediately is far tastier than a bland one from a supermarket that was picked days earlier.
tek-monkey
27 Apr 09 #85
In all seriousness, no. Come on, over the last 20 years virtually every meat has been banned for a while and almost everything gives you cancer. I happily ate beef during the BSE problem (on the bone too), I happily ate chicken when the salmonella problem arose. I don't care about scares unless actual hard facts are looking back at me from my plate.

So what concerns me? Give me a plate of meat, and I'll eat it if I like it. If the meat is rubbish and the kids wont eat it, fair enough I may not buy it again, but in a world of turkey dinosaurs I can't see a roast chicken being hazardous to their health. I survived fine, didn't you?

I am actually growing my own veg this year, but not for any supposed health benefits from organic food, just cos its free.

Exactly, this is a forum for deals not animal welfare. Its very simple, a choice of a chicken dinner for 4 or they get sausage and mash for the same price. Whilst I'd like to pretend I cared about the conditions the animal was raised in, in all honesty I couldn't give a rats ass as long as we get fed.

I'd happily eat free range if it was the same price, somone want to give me a fiver towards a chicken? Cos not everyone can afford to be picky.

27 Apr 09 #73
If you think cheap food is good you need to understand that to make cheap food you have to cut corners and that results in poor product quality. If you would put cheap (but low quality) hard drives in your pc, or watch a cheap (but low quality) tv, or buy a cheap (but low quality) laptop, games console, etc., then you are going to like this chicken!

Foregt the ethics, forget the animal welfare, this is just bad value because it tastes really really awful.

I didn't vote cold because I don't buy it myself, I voted cold because I wouldn't pay anything for that type of chicken. Tescos buy one of these chickens in for 14p so it's not a great deal at all. It's not just about it being cheap on here, it's about it being good value, right, and this isn't. And maybe you need to read the site rules, because nothing I said is anywhere close to grounds for being banned.

You are highlighting exactly why you should be banned (initially said as a joke BTW) - the idea of this place is to highlight deals - the question one should be able to identify before joining is: when to vote hot - ask can I get the same product (or better) at the same price or less - if not, then it is hot. There are exceptions, but I'll let you try to digest that one first.

I've seen these hot chickens in supermarkets, but I don't get it. You buy it hot at the hot deli counter, then you queue at the checkouts for 10 minutes, buy your stuff, walk to your car, fight your way out of the car park, drive home, unload your shopping 30 minutes later to find the chicken that you bought hot is in fact now only a lukewarm salmonella farm.

So you get back in your car, drive back to Tesco, queue at customer service, complain that your hot chicken is cold, exchange it for another one and then start the whole cycle over again.

Unless you are supposed to eat it in the Tescos aisles?
