we brought one of these, in 2008. when me and my fiance first moved in together. it has served us very very well. sadly a couple of days ago it finally bit the dust (May 2015!!!!). It has oulasted an LG freeview dvd recoder that was £200, and three different televisions I believe that was one of the best value for money electrical items I have ever owned. goodbye Alba freeview box, thanks for the service and we wil miss you.

I've got one of these in my kitchen. It's actually a decent little budget box, as good as my more expensive wharfedale on in my bedroom, but smaller!
BUT
I updated the firmware to 3.something and now the EPG is full of advertising. DON'T update it

Knowing Sony, an empty box would cost more than this.:whistling:

Hi all !
Had my first experience of one of these boxes at the weekend at a relatives weekend pad ! awful unit....stuttered a lot on the picture - 7 day guide was a joke, most channels wouldn't update etc etc. Sorry, not good - but on saying that - it is super cheap, so maybe ok for some of you for a bedroom etc ? definately one to avoid as the main unit in the house though !! thought i'd share that with you

I got this for £14.99 couple of months back for the children's bedroom and will definitely recommend if you're after a cheap box. I get all channels (more than my big sony TV) , but the remote sucks, very slow to respond but it didn't matter as I had an all in one remote which works much better.

BRAND CONSCIOUS users...simply attach a 'better' brand's logo via superglue over the surface printed one...if if make you feel better or the unit work any better...lol

It'll probably be getting on for four years befor HD is transmitted on freeview.
I'll try to get a couple of these for the video and TV and save my pennies for a HD Freesat tuner board for the PC.

Why moan about the make, it's only £9.99 for goodness sake. And even at £9.99 it would still be covered by a guarantee. Thanks for the post and I would say to people who criticise, 'if you can't say anything positive, best not to say anything at all'.

That said we are probably still many Months away from a HD box with no indication of likely cost. What price will these plummet to once they are released?
I have 5 of these and they are very good. I have them connected to ancient rooftop aerials and only have an issue with one of them where it doesn't get CH5 Voted Hot

Worth a punt for a tenner, but I had one of these stop working after 4 months. Covered by warranty of course, but frustrating nonetheless.

I figure it might be worth giving an estimated reason for them ditching these:
Last week it was announced that HD channels are coming to Freeview with effect from next year (but not all regions until 2012) but you'll need to buy a new freeview compatible tuner to do it (unless yours already has hd output), I'm guessing that these are SD only hence them being flogged off cheap.

Beware apparent lack of included SCART cable, though they are cheap enough at Tesco if memory serves (£1.97??).
