i just signed up to O2 for 12 months. 15gb data, unlimited mins & txt. £20pm, first 3 months free via chat.

Offer is only available until oct 4th i believe

i moved from vodafone asap after a horrible first 4 months back and forth with their customer support. So they may be cheaper sometimes but remember you will always get what you pay for. great if everything works but if something goes wrong then be prepared for hassle ! Never again for me

New Plusnet customer here,

You know how when you pick up your voicemails you get something like
"To hear the number of the person who called you, press 4"
?

Well not on Plusnet!
That's right. They just confirmed during the 5th call to customer services that they don't offer an ID service.

There's no way to get the number unless the person calling reads it out loud. You know, like back in the 1990s.

The previous 4 agents assumed something was wrong with the voicemail set up and tried resetting it each time. Because who would assume otherwise?

I wonder what further rudimentary functions of a phone I will discover are beyond the limit of Plusnet's capabilities, in the time it takes for a SIM to arrive from an alternative network.

(Backstory blah: I've got 30+ voicemails from people responding to an advert, almost all of whom didn't leave their number. like me they assumed I would be able to retrieve it in the voicemail options. My phone was turned off deliberately for half that time, so there's only a partial list of numbers to manually sift through and reconcile via the time codes. And it only took the Plusnet call centre a total of 80 minutes to work it out).

Anyone thats on that 32gb EE 14.50 deal. I just got a free upgrade after 5 months to 64gb and got a second 30gb sim at the next time for 13.50 and after one month upgraded that to 60gb. It was all done over web chat just said both times im running out of data and it wasnt enough and they said I was a good customer and let me have it no questions asked. I hope this helps others.

Get three sim only unlimited min /text 4GB data for £9/m plus £40 tbc and then get tesco calling app from play store. You can use inclusive min to call 0330 access number plus 1p/m Germany landline and 2p/m mobiles payable within the app . In my opinion this is most convenient and cheapest option.

Thank you for your help, @RossP_CY and @20dani‌
I would prefer a international packet. If wifi is available, I can use Facetime or Skype.
Can you recommend a trustworthy provider with a good packet on international calls? (50 to 100 minutes to German mobiles.)

What do you think about EE's Pay As You Go International SIM (3GB, 250 mins, 500 texts - £15) ?

EE max is a good deal but is £15 a month more than my Vodafone 40Gb for £30 and doesn't give me spotify which would be another 9.99, personal preference i know.

So I would have to spend 36 days in USA to make it worth it, now if they added China to that list we would be in business!

Here is the phone I use, (A1586) and a list of it supporting all US frequencies. Notice how it is the same model sold for the majority of US phone providers.

Notice how the other model sold in the USA also supports the same frequencies minus a few of the higher bands.

I have no doubt some UK sold phones support bare minimum but this is one of the advantages of a "premium" phone. I am also very aware of the issues with 3G and 4G networks I have been nearly arrested twice while trying to perform surveys with "suspicious equipment" throughout London when I was part of Agilent Technologies.

My basic point is that for anyone trying to find a sim for USA the three feel at home is a lie and does not perform... even if you take data out the question the constant call disconnects and multiple hour text message delays just make it pointless. I will just use my Vodafone £5 a day next time unless a local sim can be found for cheaper. USA has some huge data prices.

In this day and age it's not difficult to find wifi?

Basically he could get any 30 day Sim with 1gb data and 500+ minutes and save a packet on international calls. Just saying

Hello community, I need your help. I'm an Erasmus student in the UK and I'm looking for a good sim card deal (12 months contracts are too long.). How can I make cheap international mobile-to-mobile calls? (I need to make calls to German mobiles.) Three is offering cheap calls to German mobiles (3p per minute), but I don't like their add-ons. I appreciate your help. Cheers Peter

The US frequencies are US only, it is unique was my point regardless of 2/3/4G - non US mobiles will struggle in the US was my point as you have limited frequency access to any US network via higher banded frequency, even with all US networks access you are very limited with access to higher built up area frequency base stations. Just as those with US handsets people roaming in EU or anywhere in the world are limited to what frequency bands they can use, usually higher bands which are busier with data as they use higher frequency in built up/higher data traffic areas, that's why 3G at the start was problematic 2100mhz 3G UK side was great in built up areas with loads of base stations but not outwith such, indoor penetration and remote areas didn't stand up well to 2100mhz - why T-Mobile & Three joined networks backhaul. A US Roamer may have access to all networks, but not in a non US handset suitable for full access to all US networks.

Add your data all being routed to Three UK saturated servers, Traffic Management and then back to the US.

Buy a cheap US phone if you are a regular US visitor to put a Three sim in - Three allows access to all frequency in the US, your mobile doesn't.

It was entirely 3, as when using the £5 a day roaming for Vodafone that i resorted to it was fine not an issue. Even the £50 or so extra bill wasn't too bad, still far less than renting a sat nav and on par with buying a cheap one in the USA that I will rarely use.

Also I believe the 700Mhz is only used for 4G , which three flatly do not support on roaming. Vodafone do though!

8 Sep 17 #2035
40GB Vodafone was £40, available for £30 from Voda just now or £21.75 with redemption and £25 Quidco - over 50%off.

8 Sep 17 #2034
Depends on the frequency, 700mhz is common stateside the higher frequency used in busy areas - hand off can't happen to a lower frequency when saturated base stations so in built up areas speeds will reduce when you are limited to what base stations you can connect - add Three traffic management and roaming connecting to Three U.K. Serversit's only going to get worse.

already planned to use the offline maps bit for the route but wanted the sim more for traffic and spotify.

I take the articles with a pinch of salt as my Vodafone has been extremely good for the last year in Europe. I think the best solution for me is to go into Vodafone and get a shared sim for my current contract, this will allow me to share my data allowance with the iPad and all good. I get 4Gb for extra roaming allowance as well.

Relying on a data connection for sat-nav maps risks getting lost after losing the signal if you venture into a remote location with low or no signal.

Alternative is to get Google Maps or TomTom GO Mobile for iOS, then Download areas and navigate offline and use the data connection for traffic updates, or install a sat-nav app which has offline maps built-in such as Navmii GPS World: Offline Navigation and Traffic.

2 Sep 17 #2028
Forgot to say that that the 10 GB data lasts for 30 days. I think most networks slow down the roaming network, you won't get 4G speeds for sure. More like 2G speed. Let us know what the EE signal is like in Germany!

Perhaps Three really slow the internet down in the USA. I managed to get an OK signal on a very long train journey in Poland.
Nutkin
2 Sep 17 #2027
Seems good, I bought a three sim last year for Usa and quite frankly it was horrid, terrible signal and even though it said 3G the speed wasn't even enough to run google maps ! Be good to see what EE signal is like

Get an EE sim with 10GB on it from eBay for about £7.50 - when I check my allowance it says that I can use the data whilst the EU and will cover you in Germany. Some sellers also have the £10 credit on the SIM.

Turn off data on your phone insert sim then text "Stop Pack" to 150 to preserve the credit. You can buy further data packs if necessary with the credit

What's your logic for that statement? If you have a contract for a phone they are normally 18 months and include the cost of the phone as part of the monthly bill. Do you have a specific example where it's cheaper to have the phone included and pay less monthly than to buy the same sim package (minutes, texts and data) alone?

Hi All,
I have an unlocked iPad mounted in my car for audio etc, we are off to Germany at the end of the month and i was wondering what is the best option for a sim to provide data through europe for using as sat nav and Spotify, I'd like about 5 gigs or so.

Hey, my 1 year simo with three is due to run out on the 5th September.

Currently I get unlimited mins and texts and 4gb of data for £9 a month. I would quite like the "feel at home" that I don't get currently. Can anyone suggest anything close to this, including that in the price?

My 12 month retention deal with vodafone for general info.

Ultd. mins and texts 8gb 4G for £10.50. not the best perhaps, but no hassle having to port number etc.

Asked about Spotify and got that thrown in to total £16.20 a month which was the clincher for me.

Personally had no hassle with them over the last 12 months and CS is quick if you're wanting to cancel.

I'm with Tesco mobile atm and you don't get much for your money. My husband, my daughter and myself are looking for better deals. The more data the better for my daughter, my husband and I would have plenty if we had around 3/4gb. My daughter however is hoping for 20gb+. Trouble is, I don't want to spend more than £35 max in total. Not sure if it's too unrealistic

20 Jul 17 #1983
I suggest you do your research, as it is not a traditional MVNO. The SIMs need an app to operate (which is why it's iOS and Android only) and the voice traffic is handling by VoIP, not traditional GSM. Unless it's changed, it is and always has been as MynameisM said.

If you are on a very strict budget it might be ok, but many of us will pay more to not have this grief and hassle.
Incarniac
20 Jul 17 #1982
FreedomPop is an MVNO (Mobile Virtual Network Operator) - this means they don't have their own carrier network, but uses someone else's - in this case, they use Three's network, and therefore they do provide mobile coverage with data, texts and phone calls over said network. They are not a VoIP provider.

Edit: Ignore, the above is wrong, they do only have voice calls over VoIP though you need a SIM and it uses a third-party network it only uses data and calls are routed with VoIP by the sounds of it. It's still a good deal for the right person though so worth listing in the offers.

It's not for me but it's a great price that surely suits many people.

Why is this top 'today'?

EDIT: To be clear, I know why obviously, it's been updated but are we going to have this deal jump back to the top of 'TODAY'S' hottest deals every time it's updated...???? Surely Today's Hottest deal is 'TODAY'S' hottest not a deal that was originally posted almost a year ago...?
No disrespect intended msmyth and this was/is still a great deal but it's not today's deal. If I want to go back and look at some of the best deals I can, updates to these great deals are welcome but if that pins it back into today's chart, that seems to buck the trend in terms of what's posted today.

Well you need to install the xtras app, then an advert will pop up every 2 or 3 times on phone unlock to install an app, product, game or service Just click no thanks or the x in the corner to close the ad if you're not interested. I hardly ever look at ads, and don't find this app annoying or obtrusive. If you do then just pay the extra £3 per month. The app needs to be installed for 21 days per month to get the discount, but I just leave it on permanently as it doesn't bother me. I've been with Tesco Mobile (O2 network) for the last 3 years and found both the network and the customer service to be excellent, and have used the xtras app for the last 12 months since they introduced it without any problems

MODS a couple of suggestions -
a) Would it be possible to have very useful threads such as this and the one that was running on spirit prices for some time to be allocated a separate section in the "drop down" so that they were easily accessible?
b) Could the MAIN provider be shown in brackets after the secondary provider on the SIMS thread eg Tesco (O2), Giff Gaff (O2), ASDA (Vodaphone or whatever it is)? Because I live out in the sticks, O2 is the only company that provides me with a decent signal so whatever the price ASDA may be offering, it's no use to me if I can't get a signal without climbing to the top of the nearest tree at home. Just a suggestion.

I am well aware of that. But he didn't state if the alarm was 2G only. Given the prevalence, cost of 3G massively falling and many networks having reduced 2G coverage, it would make sense for any modern alarm to allow both 2G and 3G.
preecey
11 Jun 17 #1952
FreedomPop and iD Mobile use Three, who do not allow the use of their SIMs in 2G only devices. If you use one of these SIMs in a 2G only phone or alarm equipment that only utilises 2G/GPRS technologies, the SIM won't connect to the network.

11 Jun 17 #1949
He only stated a need to send text messages, but sending SMS does not require 2G. FreedomPop uses the Three network in the UK and SMS works perfectly fine providing there is Three coverage in the area.
plewis00
11 Jun 17 #1948
Do you know that or are you just speculating? He asked for 'free' and FreedomPop has a free tier.
preecey
11 Jun 17 #1947
So FreedomPop won't work then, since it doesn't support 2G. His alarm system is probably only 2G capable.
plewis00
11 Jun 17 #1946
I suspect FreedomPop or PAYG (e.g. GiffGaff) is the best way to go for this. If your alarm doesn't support 4G, it will just use 3G or 2G as needed.

I'm surprised that the EE offer of unlimited minutes and texts and 4GB data for £5.00 per month wasn't added here.
This offer was only available for a couple of days and ended yesterday.
Many of us on here got that deal.

10 Jun 17 #1944
Don't think you can get any non-4G SIMs per se, and I think all monthly plans include some kind of data allowance these days. Best bet might be PAYG and just top-up for sending texts only. Alternatively iD have a £4/month plan with 5000 texts, 250 minutes and 250MB which I think is the cheapest monthly. iD uses Three's network.

Currently with Vodafone, out of contract & have PAC code.
New deal we like also with Vodafone however they wont match online deal we found.

How long must we stay on new sim, request another PAC code before we go for new contract with original provider?
Thanks in advance.

I agree the few phone calls I had before Sat were excellent, faced with a 'glitch' on Sat no tech report was made, complaints confirmed such yesterday 4 days later so even the complaints team didn't report my issues to tech support ??

Can't blame a shortcode telephone number on the user when you haven't programmed such regulator approved use.

Actually thinking about it in Jan my T-Mobile sim done the same! Sim reissued and worked fine!!! But the bank got through on the regular TSB number on caller display!

It's a complete joke BT take over EE and a basic incoming caller id sends the network into melt down for CUSTOMERS!
djnield
24 May 17 #1922
I've never had anything but praise for these guys but did suffer some poor service getting a replacement SIM activated.

But soon as it was I received scores and scores of messages and voicemails.

Obviously it was quite an issue that I hadn't realised was so bad. And it all points to the automated call from Lloyd's bank where it all began :disappointed:
seaniboy
23 May 17 #1921
Depends who you talk to, some have admitted it's a known glitch, blamed the bank, even complaints have no idea, reading the above Shabbard link and others online it has been ongoing since late 2016.

Staff told me the bank changed to a shortcode number and it's causing the issue, correct me if I'm wrong I said but Ofcom approved these 'shortcode' telephone numbers and it's not a bank issues it's a internal issue with EE/BT Group - obviously I was met with a wall of silence. I made a complaint about the first staff members attitude - and incompetence about not logging a tech report & refusing me to follow the Ofcom enforced Complaints Code of Practice because the manager had to call me to lodge such - when I'm complaining they can't resolve a incoming call issue!

Complaints listened to the call and are now retraining the whole call centre. Still 4 days later no tech report still submitted, I emailed complaints back info requested I gave several outlets, call centre, twitter team and complaints team CANT communicate between themselves.

All was happy and well till Sat with Plusnet, called after responding to complaints email and it took 3 people and 47 mins to get a PAC...they transfer you offshore for cancellations?? Really!??

Lack of absolute training than anything not basic for a EE trained subsidiary. Assume cancellations for Plusnet are now the defunct offshore EE (sub)contract (moved to backhaul non customer facing) staff or even worse BT staff/subcontractors.

Anyway TPO and ID sim coming, first arrival gets my custom!

Beware of Plusnet, a incoming automated call from my bank has caused a 'glitch' unlimited 4GB for £10 is great until you are locked out the online banking and you can no longer get incoming calls or texts!!

Resolve itself im told 12-24 hrs later! Well this is day 3. Couldn't fight their way out a paper bag! No issue in BT or EE with same bank calling. Idiots.

Off to find a deal...
Hal
20 May 17 #1917
I don't think they'll do that BUT what I was told when I last changed mine in Feb was:-
(1) take the cheap deal
(2) before you go on holiday to a feel-at-home country, or whatever, phone them up and you can upgrade your contract for an extra £3 or so per month to include feel-at-home.
I was advised that this would count as an upgrade, rather than a change, and that they are always happy to upgrade for more money. Of course you will be paying this extra £3 (or whatever) per month until the end of your contract - once you've got it you can't cancel it until you are out of contract.

A single customer can only have 3 SIMs with PlusNet, or 5 if you're a PlusNet Broadband customer. Couldn't register all the family SIMs to me - had to register one in my wife's name. And yes, you have to order them one at a time; there's no basket functionality.
awoodhall2003
17 May 17 #1913
That could end up costing me an arm and a leg! Also in case of an emergency I don't want them to run out of credit.

That might be enough just hard to tell. Although looks like on Plusnet you can't simply order 10, you have to order them one by one. But if no other options might have to.

Thanks so far.

Hi there, I am hoping someone can help me out. I run a Youth Group in the summer, and need all my Team Leaders to have a phone - so I've purchased 10 x Nokia 130s, thus meaning I can't use 3 network (or any piggyback networks of 3) so what is the best option for me?
I only need them for 2-3 months so 1 month sim only deals ideally, they do not require data (Nokia 130 have no access) and I'd say on the safe side around 500 minutes and 500 texts (but flexible on this) - what would you recommend considering I need 10 of them?

Thanks in advance.

Includes BT Sport app as well, as well as roaming in some EU countries. No cashback though, unlike the Three deal (through Topcashback), but the EE network seems to have better coverage.

I found last year Asda Mobile were easy enough to deal with to go from Ee to Ee - requested PAC from EE, gave to Asda. I went to a Asda as no top up required. The following day I transferred the number back requesting PAC from Asda and gave to EE.

6 Mar 17 #1854
Great to know but I spent 3 days arguing with customer service and also on Web Chat and made no difference.
Not going to risk it now as already have new EE number. Seems like the companies can do and charge as they please and Ofcom is a joke. Will be much better prepared next year when the contract runs out for sure.

Thanks for the information and advice. I knew they were messing with me with the PAC code.
seaniboy
6 Mar 17 #1853
Get PAC and use today, if EE bill you for a 'billing period' after PAC ( & number transfer complete) outside the minimum contact term then raise a Ofcom complaint, get reference number AND follow the Ofcom induced Complaints Code of Practice with EE

ee.co.uk/hel…ice

ee.co.uk/reg…ory

google.co.uk/sea…oe=

At least Ofcom now record complaints fully as it was always meant to under Communications Act, they just used to give you Dispute body details but now all complaints/issues they feel are valid are recorded for performance and widespread abuse detection of any practice a telco may be involved in - its been a very long time coming, not all OLD staff are working the new way so escalate a complaint against Ofcom if you feel they are not recording your issue/complaint and giving you a reference number to quote in you complaint to your telco with its Code of Practice procedure.

ofcom.org.uk/com…com

Any telco must provide a PAC when asked, even within minimum contract period, security exclusions apply to PAC issue of course, here:
ask.ofcom.org.uk/hel…PAC (note the template letter on Ofcom own website is even out of date, it says 2 days for PAC when it changed to a max 2 hours via text years ago - consumers have to keep Ofcom in check to keep its telecom licence holders in check, its a joke the whole system: see the correct Ofcom info here for 2 hours ask.ofcom.org.uk/hel…ber - a JOKE Ofcom is!
)

Even CarPhoneWarehouse give incorrect years outdated info out, I raised it with them but it is still there mobiles.co.uk/mnp…tml
shabbird
6 Mar 17 #1852
I argued with EE but they wouldn't accept. Thought could get PAC code at any time and valid for 30 days.
Searched and saw others getting caught up in this as well. Why should a PAC request cancel the
cancellation notice and I have to start again and give 30 day notice. Tomorrow is last day of contract and
I'm worried as they will mess up and then charge me the £14.99 line rental. :disappointed:
seaniboy
6 Mar 17 #1851
Outside a minimum contract period a charge should not be made for porting out for a unusable period of services - same as moving broadband you only pay 1 provider per dates period.

Although Ofcom allows telecoms to charge for the actual PAC issue ??

Both go against the freedom of movement between telcos.

Challenge everything, except no bill charge for a 'no service' period provided.

Post issue, you should issue a complaint to telco about the telcos conduct via Ofcom.

A PAC is meant to make moving networks easy - and a unfair financial constraint or billing goes against that ethos of good faith.
seaniboy
6 Mar 17 #1850
Easiest way to get a PAC is to say you are moving and have no signal so moving to o2/Voda/EE/3 - you shouldn't have to do such but all telcos are not adhering to PAC regulation - more often they want to waste your time checking coverage maps, I just politely intervene and say I've checked coverage and it says yes but the reality is not so that's why I have tried a payg sim from X for signal and am going to PAC to them.

They may try get you to use Wifi Calling via apps or handset or a 'signal box' via broadband - just tell them no sorry coverage in the area not just good enough to stay when you know X network is much better.

Again it's terrible asking for a PAC becomes like a divorce agreement, but follow up like I said and give them no leeway people but to issue PAC

Go in prepared that that party does not want to grant you a divorce!

trying to remember which Companies allows to easily port out. Think some have changed as I recall Asda
Mobile was easy but not sure now. Better off asking EE if they could do it as they will control the 2 numbers.
The new number from mobiles.co.uk was hard to remember so did webchat and they gave me a choice of
4 numbers and within few minutes it was changed.

Sadly I went went through the pac route as would have to pay extra.
edit.. if you get no help here, use the ask section as you will get a prompt reply. good luck

I have got the pac code, I just need to know what is the easiest method of retaining my number by transferring it to another provider and back to ee using a payg sim and hopefully without having to top it up with credit - is there a sim card which will allow me to do this?

I went through this but make sure when you give your 30 days notice, you get your PAC code. They won't tell you.
They told me this in the middle of my notice period and said if you want your PAC code, then you will have to pay for an extra month. I gave up my number as no way paying for extra month.

Rang up about the Three friends and family deal (AYCE data, Unl. Txts & 200 minutes, with £50 Amazon voucher making it in effect £16.80) and told it's been expired for months. Best they offered was a similar deal, (AYCE, unl. TXTs, might have been 2000 minutes) for £22 with no voucher.

Last time I did this I ported out to O2, but then ended up needing to top the SIM up £10 before they would 'activate' it and be able to give me my PAC.

Does anyone know of a network I can use that won't have any charges for this process? Thanks.

Can anyone help me muddle through with this one?

I took the deal last Feb when Vida were offering 20gb data, unlimited mins and texts along with free Netflix for a year.

I called them to see what they could offer and the best they could do was either Sky Sports or Now TV (I don't want either) for £37.50 a month for 12months with the first 6 half price - and that was at a push.

Ideally I want as close to 20gb as possible, with some cashback or voucher for no more than £20 a months.

I know BT had a deal recently but that's just gone up to £25 a month, with a £70 Amazon voucher OR you can go via TCB and get that 20gb deal for £16 a month and £70 cashback.

Any better deals about? Would be nice to get a voucher, and cash back - I'm open to take 15gb and just be a bit more careful with my usage.

Help!!!

1) I would log a complaint with Ofcom, they are forcing you to another contract terms/inclusions but wont disclose the full price of add ons available or the price of them, so they are asking you to sign a contract you have no idea will cost you - Three cannot do that.

2) Request a PAC as a threat to leave taking your business & number elsewhere.

3) Lastly follow the Complaints Code of Conduct about their behaviour of not disclosing the full monthly amount to the suitable contract they expect you to agree too.

three.co.uk/Sup…ode

That should all take 30 minutes.

Their now third party call centre is a joke, they think they can just ignore UK telecom regulations & legislation.

Currently have a sim only with three...

£10 a month for 1gb data, 200 mins and unlimited texts. Also had unlimited data for £3 which made it a fantastic deal.

However, they're forcing me to switch to a new contract... cheapest being £11 which will also remove my addon when I take it. CS won't tell me how much an unlimited data addon will be either.

Anyone able to advise and find out how much unlimited data addons now cost with £3? Don't fancy staying with them if I can't get a deal for the same price... feels pretty scamworthy at the moment and they're just trying to get more out of me.

This deal has now expired. However, if you're not fussed about roaming or the 4GEE max sleeds, they arguably have an even better deal on now.

15GB / 500 minutes / unlimited texts for £20 per month.

Included is £75 Amazon voucher.

Be aware that this is the basic EE plan which I don't believe includes any roaming (til EU law comes into force this summer) and is capped at 20MBPS.

You can find the link here (I'm on my phone so unable to circumnavigate the affiliate link they're posting on FB): facebook.com/10w…533

The EU data is 500MB not 12GB, not that EE make that clear even on order page....typical BT

"Our fastest 4G
12 GB data
Unlimited text messages
Unlimited minutes
12 months plan
Included EU calls, texts & data
BT Sport app access"

17th August 2016 was last EE refresh of plans, only EE MAXX plans with 25GB allowance + get 15GB use in EU

ee.co.uk/hel…016

Page 3 shows the EU data bundles, £3 75MB, £5 150MB, £12 300MB, £20 600MB

Use the 500MB EU included and a further 600MB add on will cost you more than the priceplan itself = £39.99 for 1100MB EU data
NOT 12GB EU Roaming for £19.99.

Just to confuse matters EE from Nov 2016 do have a EU data included 12 month sim options plans, 12GB is £30.99

All the EE Sim Only revisions pre March 2014 to Augist 2016 ee.co.uk/hel…res

BRITISH Telecom making more a farce of EE than German Telekom & France Telecom ever could together!

EDIT Just spoke to EE - the website deals are correct, a new price plan PDF is to be uploaded to EE website.

So...In my opinion from EE sim only deals on the website the 25GB & 30GB unlimited £25/£30 sims deals are the best offers over the 12GB at £19.99 - double the data for £5 more - they include 15GB EU roaming with EU calls & texts - if you are not streaming audio/video then its a no brainer these give you UK&EU value and cut the landline for internet, a great saving all in one solution.

Shame my EE signal is poor regionally, my usage would be covered by the £25 25GB plan and cancel the Sky Broadband when it expires.

The EE January Sale has a deal for 12GB data, including EU roaming, unlimited texts & minutes for £19.99. Plus you get 6 months of Apple Music. I've just found a Topcashback link to the deal which offers £50 cashback too.

Working out at £15.82 per month if cashback tracks, plus a potential £60 saving on Apple Music would have it at £10.82 per month.

Cashback also available on their other £25 sim only deal which includes 20GB of data.

I'd recommend both as good deals for those who want to use data when roaming in Europe.

I just went with the BT Ultimate Sim only deal. Unlimited calls, unlimited texts, 15gb.

£21 per month, but because I have BT broadband they knock a fiver off.

£16 per month, but they give you an £80 amazon voucher (and I'll be spending money there anyway) so that is effectively £6.67 a month saved.

That makes this deal £9.33 a month for me, and if the Quidco £60 tracks this will be £4.33 a month for me. Unbelievable.

I find if you go in to a communications contract expecting a good level of communication you really should not be going into a communications contract.

There is not one communications company I have not ended up in dispute with in 20 years, the bar of care is dismal, they just seem to think a contract is a financial get out of jail free card, and trying to enforce your rights over a licenced school bully is near impossible, most people cant do it and should remain payg not contract. Ofcom has been a joke and is marginally better with the new Chief - still at least thats some progress over its lifetime.

EE retentions just now gave me 4GB of up to 60meg speed with 1000mins and unlimited txt for £7.99pm, was their first offer after me asking for PAC from existing tmobile and me mentioning best deal detail from this thread, seemed a good offer so I didnt haggle for more.

Looking to move from O2 PAYG to contract. seen an attractive tariff on Three available via uSwitch - 4Gb Data, unlimited calls and SMS for £10. Problem is I get V.poor Three reception at key locations :-(.

O2 seems to have best signal for my needs and they even have tarriff which appear similar to what three is offering... except the reduced price (50% reduction) is only for first 6 months.

Any tips to get O2 to match the three tariff? Already tried store and web chat.

Anyone seen something similar on another network? Something that will continue at the same monthly price past 6-12 months I.e. no offer period.

TIA and happy new year!

It's hard to say. I have got through on Twitter to some of the people who are old LIFE staff, and they have been as good as usual. But I had a live chat with PlusNet support, and it took 25 mins to get an operator and they really couldn't be bothered helping. The problem is online reviews will always be skewed as people complain more than praise. Also, to give Plusnet some leeway, they must have just taken over, so might be some transitional glitches.

I was gutted when Plusnet bought LIFE. Literally no benefits in what one gets, and get worse C/S as well. Thing is, I am grandfathered into an old deal with 6GB Unlimited/Unlimited for £13 p/m, so no real incentive to go anywhere else, as not fussed about jumping up from 3G to 4G.

with the BT 500min,unlimited texts and 4gb of data at £10 for BT customers if you join topcashback they're giving £40 cash back on that tariff knocking the monthly cost down to £6.67, then ontop of that you can claim either an iTunes or Amazon gift card when taking out the 12mth contract which with no way saved should take the price of your contract down to about £4 per mth....not a bad deal if I say so myself

Still examining this one. May be value for a few but clearly a minority I would think. For example I have a few relatives (older) that don't use data but would like a lot of minutes. If you can add and share the cost of people like this on one plan then it may work out decent value. Still mulling

Emojis are just Unicode characters It's up to the recipient's phone to be able to display them. They can't count as images because they appear completely differently depending on what phone operating system the recipient has. You're sending text that is then turned into an image on the other end, you're not sending images.
djnield
14 Dec 16 #1731
I've never been charged for using emoji's yet....
And they don't charge for retrieving voicemail as it's included in your bundle allowance. If you ran out of minutes then yes, you would be charged in that case.

Got a decent retention deal on Vodafone for 2 contracts I have so should be available to others:

£16.20 pcm for 12 months (40% discount on 8GB Red sim only plan - usually £27)

Unlimited minutes & unlimited texts
12 months Spotify or Sky Sports mobile.

no they were after a good price with good customer care instore, never been t-mobile, Orange or EE who still have a major capacity even with improvement to still be mainly sales outlets, that prob continue under BT branding.

In all my experience of 25 years in mobile the o2 store staff excel in payg care - even better than their payg call centres,3, Voda Orange, T-mobile (and now EE ) have an long term knack of just saying call your payg customer care number, you dont do that when a customer has come in, you take ownership and resolve the issue even if you the staff member has to call for them & o2 store staff mainly do it and if its not offered asking will usually result in them doing so, much more than any other retail division. I am not a o2 fan but my payg sim has always been on o2 and instore help when needed as always been better than contract on ALL the networks sales outlets instore.

o2 Classic PAYG plan breakdown: o2.co.uk/hel…-go

Order free o2.co.uk/sho…go/

50 min for £1 bolt on, a lot of cheap data options too: o2.co.uk/sho…ns/

o2 messaging 400 Bolt On, 400 UK messaging units £11.99 - Call 2425 free or text 'MSG400' to 21300 to subscribe.

Still works for me^ but not advertised on website anymore ? £11.99 per month auto renews - so keep balance under £11.99 if you do not need the bolt on any month and it stays on the account waiting for a balance of £11.99 each month being available - this 400 unit bolt on gives texts or 3 for 1 mutltimedia/MMS texts = 3p texts and 9p MMS (usually 35p)

BT now owns EE but their mobile division is still separate and ran off EE's network in the past anyway. You should now consider them to be like an EE budget range - and also better if you are already a broadband customer.

If you're persistent - which you should be as a member of HUKD - you will get your voucher but one look at the BT forums and it's littered with people claiming they didn't receive their voucher. Not saying you won't, but thought you should know.

Depends if you're a budget conscious person or if you appreciate the better technology.

EE we give you faster 4G speeds, WiFi calling and Voice over 4G, as well as visual voicemail if you're on an iPhone.

I think the extra is worth it if you like to be at the cutting edge. If you just want data on the cheap go with BT.

Thanks

27 Nov 16 #1690
If you want to just test them out then £1 data pack is a good idea, minimum top up is £5 then £1 comes out of that every 7 days. You get 10mins call, 10texts,100mb data. It disappears quickly! I got it as I was living abroad and wanted something to use on short trips home, £1 just about got me through the weekend, and I'm not a heavy user. Definitely don't recommend £1 data pack for longer term (which prob goes without saying!), personally I can't wait to leave ee next week -their shops have the worst customer service I've ever seen which has just put me off generally.

I can understand how you feel - there's definitely been an 'upselling' attempt with the 20GB for £20 plans that networks have been doing. If you wanted something less, the virtual operators are the ones that have you covered. Of course that's not what you want, but I can't help the feeling that this was all planned by agreement with the virtual operators and true operators.
djnield
25 Nov 16 #1653
Exactly the reasons I'm determined to become an EE customer.
They have good retention deals (£8.99 unlimited & 4GB) so they can woo you but I was expecting a bit more than a damp squid this Black Friday for new customers :disappointed:
Sheza1
25 Nov 16 #1652
Not really, I've very happy with my £19.99 SIM I just bought.

Sure you could get the same for less elsewhere but with EE you get:
- Double speed 4G on this plan - most other providers are around the 20Mbps mark.
- More 4G than 3G coverage - Three's 4G coverage is lacklustre.
- VoLTE - Three do this (yay) but Vodafone only do it on Voda-Voda calls and it's some 3G tech.
- VoWiFi - Only Vodafone matches this for its integration with the phone. Other providers rely on separate apps.
- Visual Voicemail - Not on Three, Vodafone etc.
- Commitment to increase 4G coverage to 95% land mass

Also I believe still get Quidco and the Apple Music offer takes it down to £11.65 anyway...
blueincubus
25 Nov 16 #1651
EE charge more because they have the best coverage and data speeds - ultimately it's up to everyone to make their own choices based on how important they consider that to be. For me the main problem with EE's deals is there there is nothing competitive around the 5-10GB mark, I'd prefer to pay £15 p/m for 10GB than £20 for 20GB which I know I won't really use.

Normally you can't keep your number if you're buying a deal intended for new customers on your current network, so you would need to port your number to another network and then back to EE. You can do this by porting your number to a free PAYG sim with a diff network, then porting it to EE from there, bit of a pain, but can be done in a few days.

I am so annoyed with EE at the moment.

I am on Friends & Family Discount 30% and EE is saying that they can't upgrade my account to this contract.
I ordered the new line via quidco and they still can't switch my number to new contract (excluding F/F discount). EE is saying that this is promotional offer for new customer but existing customers can upgrade it if they don't have F/F discount over the phone.

Horrible !!

kind of a niche product not really for data users

Good for alarm systems, 2G (GSM) phones, emergency phones, those who can't use Three's 321 sim because of bad reception.

Interestingly the £19.99 EE black Friday sim only deal is tracking on Quidco at £70 rather than £49.50 as would be expected from the offers listed on Quidco - maybe tracking based on list price? Would theoretically get the cost down to £14.16 per month.

I hear all sorts of bother about redemption and whatnot with those sorts of offers. Poor Trustpilot ratings.

Signal is very subjective depending on where you spend most of your time. EE generally has the most spectrum and the most advanced technology from what I can see.

Do you know if the mobiles offer includes Spotify? I guess not?

I'm looking at the EE Black Friday 20GB deal, reading the terms and conditions from the EE website they seem to be saying you get free European roaming including up to 15GB of data per month. Does any know if this is correct or not? (otherwise I might contact EE to confirm). Thanks

23 Nov 16 #1626
The 20gb/4gb Vodafone deal through mobiles.co.uk works out at £8.75 per month with redemption and Quidco. That's worth the slightly slower speeds as EE speeds are not guaranteed (Up To). I've used both EE and Voda data and while im in office the Vodafone data is faster while EE struggles to give any 4G. EE & Vodafone's customer service is rubbish tho but if you have no problems to start with you don't need to ring them.
I would prefer to stay with EE but price wise there expensive compared to other providers. EE 4GEE Max plans are the quickest but hold there premium rate

23 Nov 16 #1624
It's been on their site for a week now - £22.50 I believe. As a student, EE's 6 months of Apple Music and Vodafone's 12 months of Spotify effectively bring both deals down to £17.50 a month.

So the differences are basically:
- Much more roaming data from Vodafone
- Faster 4G at EE
- Wider 4G coverage at EE
- Visual Voicemail at EE
- VoLTE at EE

I am leaning towards EE. On Three at the moment and I've always been jealous of my girlfriend's better coverage and speed on EE. Vodafone has had problems in my area in the past. Both seem to have crappier customer service than Three but what can you do if Three just can't provide the service?

The problem with EE matching other providers is that they will only match what deals you can get direct and advertised. This doesn't include any discount like the 30% on Vodafone through work etc or any 3rd party's like mobiles.co.uk with the 20gb Vodafone deal at £10.
EE needs to to lower there sim only tariffs to compete with others
Hussain1837

My suggestion is if you can quote a genuine current Three or Vodafone deal then that will trigger a new part of their script that they have to follow, otherwise transfer to retentions and get PAC code and again try repeat the other offer.

Hutchison Global was a sister company, dealing with call centres for 3 and other companies, it was sold off 4 years ago, was inevitable after that a security breach would happen with a 5 year ongoing service contract from Hutchison.

Really data protection should enforce data is controlled in the country it is collected from, its a failure of Data Protection Act. Also a failure to keep jobs in the UK, globalisation of data has seen fraud thrive.

Like i said. You have to take out a "shocking" 30 month contract then as soon as you receive the sim, speak to the online chat and ask to be upgraded. Keep trying until you find someone who is willing to give you a good offer. I took out the lowest sim which is £9 a month, i received the sim 2 days later, went on the online chat and was upgraded straight away. You could probably do this even quicker by going into the 3 store and getting your new sim and number straight away and then speak to the online chat when you get home. It's worth trying, even if they don't offer you what they offered me, you can just cancel it anyway as it's a 30 day contract.

I don't know if this has been mentioned before, but I just checked on BT mobile product upgrades, and found that I could upgrade my existing BT Mobile - (12mo)- 200m, Unlimited texts, 500mb - £5PM (Existing BT Broadband customer) to BT Mobile - (12mo)- Unlimited minutes, Unlimited texts, 500mb. There was no extra cost involved, and no extension to my existing contract period. I have a dual sim phone, and I was lucky enough to get the recent half price EE 32Gb offer for the other SIM slot, so the 500mb limit on BT is not a problem for me.

Few questions people:
I'm torn between the 20gb/4gb (EU use) unlimited deal with Vodafone for £22.20 direct with them or £10 per month via mobiles.co.uk and if you add top cash back £15.00 works out £8.75 per month, some of Three's feel at home deals like 8gb data/600 mins works out at £9.33 or same but with unlimited mins £13.08 with adding £50 Quidco to both.
Three's other offers including the £50 Quidco is Unlimited data, mins and texts £19.83
600 mins but unlimited data etc £16.08.
As I only get 4gb of data and unlimited calls and texts is the large data packages overkill for me. I have used the full 4gb a few times and come close but always use Wi-Fi when home for free.
I know use out of UK is not a massive deal breaker as I only go on holiday a few times a year if that but it does help
Do Three and Vodafone send a message when your approaching your max allowance
Do they both cap you allowance in UK & internationally so you can not go over the agreed amount.
Do three and voda put there prices up every year like EE
As networks go which one has better coverage in UK
What if I find the network is poor for me signal wise can I cancel
I would prefer to stay with EE but there not offering anything decent and all the blah blah blah that there network is the best is not totally true as I still struggle in some places in Sheffield to get decent 4g data etc.

As it goes the Vodafone deal of 20gb/4gb for £10 by redemption and £15 Quidco looks a no brainer for £8.75 per month (Even tho no mention of the free entertainment packs on mobiles.co.uk or e2save) but Three are offering some tasty deals especially unlimited data or would black Friday bring something even better.
Was hoping to sort both my numbers out as both my pac codes from EE run out this sunday.

Any advice would be great, Shame no decent 30 day sim only deals bobbing about
As im looking for 2 x deals would I get 2 x quidco and be able to get the redemption discount on both

£5 a month
unlimited texts
unlimited minutes
500m of data
12 month contract.
£30 amazon voucher

The £50 of cashback and vouchers equate to £4.16 savings per month over the 12 month duration. therefore the deal has in effect, only cost me 84 pence per month (assuming the CB pays out).

I was told 30% off they listed price per month by more than one Vodafone advisor, but you will be correct now.
I was offered the 30% when 20gb was £20.00 and 25gb was £25.00 per month. Looking at the sim only deals on the Vodafone site they seen to have increased the 20gb price per month from £20.00 to £22.20 and then put the 30% off, Removed the 25gb as well. Sneaky!!
£15 per month for 5gb in my opinion is over priced.

There is also a £22.50 12 month contract for 20gb data and 4gb EU data. Including 12 months of premium entertainment.
Not sure what quidco or topcashback offer now as mine was ordered last week.
Also if you are a university student or have a friend/family member. If you take the sim out in their name (obviously you will be paying) as a student you get 10% discount with a valid university address and student ID.

Does anyone know a website which tells you which providers piggyback off which network?

If one exists, might I suggest adding the list to the first post? I would be happy to help in any way.

Thanks for maintaining this thread btw op!

Thanks to everyone on this post. I appreciate everyone's efforts and comments.

I managed to Get unlimited text, minutes and 8GB data on 3 with tethering and feel at home for £13 a month.
I purchased the lowest price sim they have which is £9 a month then spoke to Richard on the online chat who was able to upgrade me straight away. The best part about this deal is that its on a 30 day rolling contract! I am not sure if you can do this if you bought the 12 month £9 deal which expired the other day but i suggest that you take out any 30 day sim only contract then ask to be upgraded to this or something similar

Been looking to upgrade to EE sim only for a couple of months and couldn't find a decent deal, previous was on EE 20GB unlimited m/t, so wanted 20GB again but they could only offer 15GB or 25GB for way more than Three and Vodafone.
Got my PAC and was then offered 15GB for £20 unlimited m/t, I said I would think about about it and agent said he would hold the deal for me.
Rang back a week later before my PAC ran out to go for that deal - but was told it was not available now because EE had just changed all their tariff structure/prices, and prices were even higher than before - wtf!
Said see ya - I’m off to vodafone. So ordered a Vodafone sim only deal thru e2save, 20GB £20 unlimited m/t, plus a total of about £125 rebates over the year.
Had to ring EE again to get another PAC code and retentions guy said he could now offer the 15GB/£20 deal, i said forget it now no thanks. Today was about to ring vodafone to give them my PAC code, but EE called, guy was from the Executive Loyalty team or something like that, and they were higher than the retentions team. Was expecting same offer of that crappy deal but he offers 25GB for £20 fastest 4g speed, unlimited m/t with european call and data roaming, plus Apple Music 6 months, plus Sky Sports. I took it and have cancelled Voda, really wanted the Apple music.
Just thought I would share this if anyone after a bigger badder data contract.

well just tried EE again via telephone and the best he offered was the following
100mins, unlim text and 4gb data (No EU use) £8.99 (No unlimited mins)
Unlimited mins and texts, 4GB Ultra fast data, BT Sports 12 months free & 500mb EU data use £15.99 (I have no use for BT Sport) - Thought this was a rip off
I declined both as can get better with work discount
If they would have inc unlimited mins & EU use on the £8.99 deal I would have took it if im honest, but there was no way the chap could add it apparently. Thing my pac codes expire next week so if no joy with them im of to voda. Come on EE pull ya socks up and give me a deal

I'm currently paying £10 per month for 2500 minutes, unlimited texts, and 2GB 3G data. Also included is 2500 minutes to 08 numbers, including 0870 and 0845. I reckon the latter could be costing Virgin a lot.

The equivalent 4G tariff is £12 per month for 2500 minutes, unlimited texts, and 2GB data. The extra £2 for 4G sounds reasonable, but there is no mention of inclusive minutes to 08 numbers, other than 0800 and 0808. If you use 0845 and 0870, you will be badly stung.

11 Nov 16 #1507
You're talking nonsense.

A very low user could be using only 100 minutes a month, 50 texts and 100gb of data.

On Three's PAYG that would cost £5 (100x3p, 50x2p, 100x1p).

Therefore anyone using under the above would be better off on Three PAYG. As Brilly says, for very low users Three's PAYG is a better option, to not even mention it is an oversight.

We should have a sim thread for data only too.

I have just set up a Freedompop account for myself with unlimited mins/texts

Any recommendations for low calls/texts usage with high data ? Someone wants the same as me.

I used my T-Mobile sim with 500 min and unlimited texts/data today and its going well, call quality on 3G is great, wifi at home, global freedompop sim in the drawer. Sim number for family/importants and FP for all the bumff calls.
seaniboy
11 Nov 16 #1506
That would be low use, 2500 mins would be high use, the thread and title is about about sim only deals and FREE sims, not payg charges.

But this thread is predominately about sim only deals, and free sims offers, 321 is not either, so usage on 321 for the two plans will cost a small fortune. Eh.

iD Mobile 4G - 250m, 5000t, 1GB

321
250 x 3p £7.50
5000 x 2p £100.00
1000 x 1p £10.00

£117.50 or £5, I dont think you can compare the two.

They've messed up my 4G upgrade (still don't have it) but while I'm on a 30 day contract I'm giving them the benefit of the doubt.

Since leaving Three for Life I've convinced myself I only want to use EE's network. Haven't yet got a credible deal through EE so Life is my next option and I do love how you can speak to a native....they even answer the phone quicker than when I call me mother :face_with_monocle:

If EE come up with a decent Black Friday offering I'm switching though. Signed up and cancelled within 14 days just to try their sim/data speeds and my phone is calling for a return to them (_;)

A number is pooled after disconnect, they can pull it out the pool for the original user only.

I would call Ofcom about everything, they document complaint details, and give you a ref no, then raise another complaint with Life with the Ofcom ref no.

What a palava of EE/Life care. Glad my EE complaint via Resolver was taken seriously and got to leave half way through 12 months.

Maybe not up North, way up North, North Britain I believe, removing EU calls from a priceplan would mean early termination, it is not imposed on networks to include EU usage on plans, only roaming per unit is capped by European Commission. So roaming caps would leave if networks chose, but allowances remain, which is unlike Vodafone who have said bye UK we will be #brexiting UK

>Rang up to claim 4G upgrade offer promised through live chat, they had no knowledge of them, promised call back
>Call back several days later, tried selling me a 3G package despite me repeatedly saying it's not the amount of data I have but the speed that makes it unusable. Asked him to honor the price offered through text chat, he refused saying the text chat agent said it was for "additional lines only" (he didn't!!).
>Sent in complaint regarding the above bait and switch
>Later still, received a nice complaint response admitting they had misadvised me and would now honor it
>I ring to get a PAC code
>5 mins later, go to make call - line is suspended and diverts to customer service
>Agent gives me an absolute load of nonsense about how they have to stop call usage when you request a PAC - I tell him that what he is suggesting is clearly not true and would be illegal if applied - agent argues the toss with me, so I transfer to manager
>Manager admits the agent who provided the PAC messed up and terminated my account - sorry about that, can't be undone

I distinctly get the impression they all make it up as they go along frankly. I've had other issues down the line previously where they wouldn't give me any of the APN details as I wanted to use them on a BlackBerry Z30, and any Blackberry device on their network as they all require Blackberry services (completely untrue for any phone they've made since 2013).

The 3G speed has gone from being half-decent to being actually unusable most of the time. I don't have confidence that their 4G service would sort that out.

Are ID any good? Seem to get loads of bad reviews on over charging.

I see that they now have "Shock Proof" tariffs so you can set a limit on the max amount spent. Can you set like giffgaff where you can not go over your bundle allowance.

So ideal situation is pay £5 for the 250m, 5000t, 1.5GB and then set your limit to ZERO so that you are always limited to your bundle.

Anyone confirm if thats the way it works?

Calls were dropping, its was not a signal issue but a network issue of some type on old Orange base stations near home and various other places around a 10 sq mile zone, wifi calling (Nokia & Apple) was hopeless as the upload speed of BT Broadband is best 500kbps and calls echoed for other party, tried with Signal Box which had the same, but marginally better until BT upload speed dropped mid call. Effectively EE issue could only be resolved by dropping roaming on EE old sister Orange base stations which were always better before the merger - TMob took 9 years to resolve echo on a local base station, yes from the One2One days, with the merger we thought yes brilliant but Orange base stations were shut down for the inferior T-Mobile.

Maybe EE signal will be something when BT invest like they did o2, until then, bye BEE'T
seaniboy
7 Nov 16 #1469
2xEE sims roaming on old Orange signal have issues with calls connecting, a Orange sim dosent...go figure! EE issued PAC's as left with signal box at home coverage & old Orange base station roaming off meant terrible patchy coverage and due to health reasons this was not suitable.

Just took a iD £10 30day 4GB. Think I'm over even sim only contracts other than 30 days, when signal issues pop up its easy to move.

Ironically the Orange sim has no issues roaming on the old T-Mob, now EE's base stations, I assume the network is not fully integrated past a base station change to EE so handsets do not show roaming - technically EE sims still roam on the now rEEnamed old Orange base stations that survived the cull. Started off occasionally not connecting calls & 6 months later most calls failed so switch roaming and calls connect - but network coverage dramatically drops and thats 3G. 4G coverage is meant to be city wide (outside the city located), its not, same as 3. Both networks are only 4G in the centre of the nearest town - MBNL 4G coverage maps are completely made up, 3 and EE say 4G over the city and beyond for the last 2 years but as I said its town centre only and thats miles away. MBNL need to get a grip of 4G coverage and maps.

it's really good for phone calls both receiving and making but I've found the Internet painfully slow. I last used it in the states this September. also they have a 12gb limit in a year policy. three incorrectly said I'd used up 12gb and cut my data off completely without the option of paying additional costs for more data. eventually it was turned back on after a few hours on the phone to customer services!

despite that I still think it's well worth it  I hope that helps

I would recommend getting a monthly deal until you can check the signal on the company you plan to use, EE say they have very good 3G signal in our area and they do across wide areas but there are lots of areas where you get no service. similarly with 3 their coverage checker is so far out of date they even tell you it, 4g in most places but lots of places where its 3g or nothing. And we live in an urban area. For us, only real option is o2, which means Tesco or Giffgaff which kills speeds.
