Nice spot. Returns and aftercare has been an issue with Oneplus since day one so being able to purchase from O2 is much better.

May not get alot of heat though as this is RRP.

When I bought my OnePlus X there was a compulsory £10 delivery charge which isn't included in the RRP. So if you get it delivered from O2 for free then you may have saved £10

Also, this is a great phone for the price especially after they patched the RAM software bug.

I find O2 to be the easiest phone company to unlock phones. Just fill in the form with your pay monthly details, and await the code (takes about 24 hours for most phones). Doesn't cost anything either.

Wouldn't recommend as had one of these and after spending alot of time trying to sort it out sent it back as very glitchy...now have an S7 edge and had no problems whatsoever
Also had a oneplus x that suddenly during calls the sound would go...Really wanted both of these phones to be good but just not worth the hassle imo

64GB not enough?
Skymonkey to bear807
27 Sep 16 #23
Kind of agree but 64GB is a fair amount. I'd like a bigger/replaceable battery - that combined with a 1080p screen (which form me is absolutely adequate) would mean longer tie off-charge.

I kinda wonder that if after the whole Note 7 fiasco if we'll see a more widespread return of replaceable batteries for smartphones.
mjb1975

It is 64GB mind! That might not be enough for some but the equivalent Samsungs, etc, are mostly 32GB.

OnePlus 2 was full of bugs and I sold it on eBay. That was reasonably priced. This 3rd gen is much more expensive. Personally would suggest the Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 for less than half this cost.

I moved to OP3 from LG g4 and still found it to be a major upgrade. Very easy to root and install xposed etc. Finger print sensor is actually faster than iPhone 6s! (I used to own several iPhones before G4 and my wife still has an iPhone 6, so I am not pro-android or apple). Screen however is poor for text and is just good enough for pictures and video (sRGB mode). Sound quality through the speaker is poor and through headphone jack is average compared to G4 (possibly due to the difference in DAC used). Using viper4android with OP3 makes little to no difference where as with G4 it was able to improve the quality a lot. Battery life is better than G4. I get nearly two days with moderate use. Dash charging is amazing (hope it doesn't explode!). NFC is just a joke. Is it worth £300 (pre-brexit price)? No considering g4 was just £200.
jasonwood999
27 Sep 16 #30
I'd bought a OP2, and they released OP3 about a week after, I was able to send my OP2 back and then purchase the OP3 and its brilliant, way faster than the OP2 and tweaks and changes you can make using developer mode are really helpful too. Best phone I'd ever have.

I would recommend it for the price its just as good as the iphone or samsung. And less annoying. I am currently using a oneplus 3 since August. Haven't had any issues its super fast, full charge in 30mins and charge lasts longer than iphone and samsung. No glitches. The screen is really big so if you have small hands you might find it a slight issue. It has alot of other features like fingerprint, light notification. Pocket mode.

Of course it's subjective whether you prefer one UI over another. But for someone to say that they "hate" the UI on the S7 when they specifically went out and bought an S7 makes little sense. The UI on that is very different to the TouchWiz of yesteryear and it's fluid and very usable. Multi window for example is just a superb feature, and so many other options can be toggled or changed to user preference rather than being shoved down your throat.

Absolutely love my OP3. It's a stunning device to look at and feels great in the hand. Software-wise it's the fastest phone I've ever used, and while there may be some software issues, OnePlus have been great at pushing new software versions out with fixes etc. This is something that they have been known for being bad at in the past, so it's nice to see that they seem to be maturing as a company.

TL;DR: Great phone. Great price. Aftercare from O2. Great buy!

In all honesty, my girlfriend has an S7 and I was amazed by how slow it was (compared to the OP3). The camera may be awesome on the S7, but the phone overall is a mixed bag. Also, either the S7 has a poorly implemented fingerprint scanner, or the OP3 just has an incredibly fast and accurate one. Either way, but what you like! The S7 is a great phone!

Had a OP3 since launch, awesome phone. Super quicker charging. Screen colors took some getting used to, I came from an LG G2, IPS TFT. I didnt like the overblown colours of an OLED like the galaxy's. But a rom update made the color temp controllable to your liking.

Regular security updates so far. Super quick finger print reader.
I do find my self accidentally triggering the cap touch buttons though while playing games. But it is so quick to task switch and has so much ram you can flick back in an instant.

Depends. Pixel will have a slightly faster processor (Snapdragon 821 compared to O3's 820). It's stock Android, and you're guaranteed to get updates direct from Google. Other than that, Pixel leaks look pretty underwhelming...and apparently the base model (Pixel 32gb) will be $649...that's roughly £499. For that price, you're better off with O3 unless you care about stock Android and guaranteed updates.

There are so many comments from those that clearly don't own this phone it really doesn't help a possible buyer. I have had this phone from release, I didn't own any of the previous phones from this manufacturer so can't comment there. My previous phone was the utterly dire Nexus 5x, for reference. The OnePlus 3 is a premium phone, I do not care what others say. I own one, use it every day and it is a class act. The build quality is excellent, it's not inspired design wise but what phone is nowadays? Does it make compromises to keep this price, yes but in my opinion they are very clever ones and you don't notice them, at all. The most obvious being the 1080p res. It's not flagship standard, but nor does it need to be...yet. I don't think experience is diminished because of the 1080 screen. The OS is fantastic for the simple fact they've left android more or less alone but added some very useful tweaks. The whole phone has a quality about it, and while it doesn't match an S7 overall, it's not far behind batting in the same park at near half the cost!. If having the very best phone is important to you, regardless of cost, then skip over the OnePlus 3. If having a flagship standard phone for half the price of the others works for you, with a couple of compromises that don't bother you. This is a no brainer of a phone! You won't be disappointed with this buy and it's the best phone I've owned since my trusted nexus 4.

I am typing this on my OnePlus 3 which I love. My wife now has my old OnePlus 2 which has a faulty fingerprint sensor. I probably could have had it replaced but didn't want to be without it. My 14 yo son has a OnePlus X which he loves too.
My wife used to have a Samsung S4 mini which Samsung haven't bothered to provide updates for. Samsung phones are also full of Samsung crapware which tries to hijack your data so you never know whether it's on Google or somewhere at Samsung. Oneplus on the other hand, is very close to vanilla Android so switching and upgrading phones is simple.
Great phone, buy one. Voted hot.

27 Sep 16 #93
Unlikely - from what I read it wasn't the battery cells themselves that were the problem, and part of the reason for dumping removable batteries (aside from how restrictive they are for the designers) is that it vastly lessened the amount of crap (and dangerous) batteries people were buying off eBay for £2.50 that were also catching fire and giving Samsung (and others) a headache.

I've had one since launch and it's been a complete pleasure to use, especially coming from a Korean brand which seemed to have progressively got slower over the course of the year.

OnePlus are actively making updates for the device each month and I like the fact that it's continually being improved upon and issues addressed not like Samsung ever done.

If you like to record video, this will not be the device for you. The ois does not work and the thing refocuses all the time and creates a wobble wobble effect.
LTE drop outs have been reported by uk owners. its all or nothing it can not hold a low signal on 4G
magnet issue with VR,
Bluetooth issues
Discoloured screens
random reboots
wifi dropouts
Poor battery life on med-Heavy usage
Issues with snapchat
issues with facebook
soft screen coating, so scratches easy
notification not coming through i realtime and infact hours later
And more bugs than you will find in your garden.

Be sure to visit their site and go through the support section, buying a Oneplus device is a lottery

Have to agree with OP criticism. I was all aboard the OPO hype train when it first arrived but over the past couple of years this phone has been a pain. Huge delays on software but the main gripe is data connection. If I ever go to a different part of the country (or just a different part of my home city) I will often lose data, despite others with me being on exactly the same network. The phone will only reconnect to data if I restart the phone. I have tried every "Solution" under the sun to fix this but there doesn't seem to be any fix and you're talking months to get a warranty replacement, if they would even acknowledge it. If you check different sites you'll find this widely reported. Seems to be something intrinsic to the software as my mate (also opo) can be in the exact same area on the exact same provider and still have differing levels on signal/data (Have tried this in multiple places). Love this phone and performs well day to day but the bugs are just a total nightmare.

Wonder if o2 will honour warranty if you brick due to flashing custom ROM? I've had op2 since launch and its a great modders device knowing you can root and flash without voiding warranty. Yes, I miss an awesome camera but can't justify inflated prices of market leaders. I think its wrong to compare these to £500 phones but you won't find a better phone for same price.

I've come from a 3gs, s2, note 1, note 3 to the op2 and have no regrets!

The vast majority of app developers disagree.. Touchwiz is notoriously badly written and ends up introducing unforeseen bugs due to Samsung messing around with android on a system level which also leads to it 'rotting' (slowing down) over time.

Top quality phone. Got it as a replacement for my Samsung S7 edge which I lost on holiday. Having had every single galaxy since the S2 I must admit I'm something of a Samsung fan boy when it comes to smartphones but I can safely say I'm not missing it at all. This phone is super fast and does everything the Samsung would do at nearly half the cost. Quick charge on it is rapid. Also the finger print reader is quickest I've ever come across any phone and you don't even need to click it unlike Samsung you just place your finger over it and VOILA!! The Amoled screen on this is on par with the S7. If your looking for a top spec premium Android phone look no further this phone is amazing. Really can't believe how good value for money it is. New OnePlus fan here

Might be interested in this, but concerned by the poor camera reviews and comments.

Do you think the camera performance is hardware or software related and would a 3rd party camera app improve things.

I've had flagship phones in the past, but for just over a year I've had a Smart Ultra 6. Which has been disappointing. Camera is poor, 3g/4g slow, very slow in fact. Seam to hijack data too. Could be a Google thing. Great value though. I don't want to find myself in the same boat with my next phone.

On contract with o2 and they've just offered me unlimited text/calls 10gb data to stay with them, so tempted to go for a deal on this phone. But then they have an iPhone 6s plus like new for a similar price. Or even considering a Windows 950xl
Skymonkey
28 Sep 16 #143
Not sure about the Lumia. The iPhone may hold its value more so than the OnePlus but that's a whole new ecosystem to get to grips with.

Maybe check on YouTube for camera tweaks. I'm guessing that software could play a part in improving the quality of images but that's down to updates being g pumped out. You could of course try a third party app but nothing is guaranteed. I would say however this is a step up and then some compared to your current phone.

6gb RAM(!) means its app performance is snappy every time.

To be fair, I could write a pretty long list, too, if I compiled ALL the reports of ANYTHING wrong with the S7, or the iPhone 7 etc. While it's nice of you to compile a list of 'things that could possibly go wrong', these aren't realistic issues. Personally, I have no issues with signal, Bluetooth, screen, reboots, WIFI, battery, Facebook, notifications etc. What I HAVE got issues with are SnapChat not working well (although SnapChat is a terribly optimised app.), and the OIS when recording video in 4K.

Finally, if you seriously think that the phone coming with a pre-applied screen protector is an 'issue' then you are the one with issues. Don't like it? Buy another and put that on! Until then, be thankful you have something protecting your screen!

Just about the only issue I have with OP3 is that I just can't find a decent tempered glass screen protector for it. Oneplus do a curved one, but it's been out of stock for weeks. Because the device has a curved edge, most protectors leave a gap of a few mm all the way round.
The_Hoff
28 Sep 16 #154
If you want updates reasonably quickly and aren't interested in rooting and downloading your own ROMs steer clear of OP, they're very slow to release them.

By contrast (G4 user) LG are one of the fastest and have already laid out their intentions. It may not be important to you, but worth considering.

Also, after sales wise OP are still terrible, particularly if you're used to Apple standards of care. I also would take too much comfort in buying it from O2, yes, without 28 days you can chuck it back to O2, after that you'll be dealing with OP direct and subject to their horrendous turn around.

Much better off with a G5, 5X or Redmi IMO.

Lumia camera's are fantastic. If the camera is you main interest, I'd have a good look at them. Still to use anything that can top the 920 I had a few years back.

BUT .... they don't hold their value at all. If you want any resale out of it, it's not the phone for you.

As for the guy constantly banging on about his S7 ...... enjoy bloat-wiz and your 6+ months wait for Nougat ....

(I was a long-time Samsung phone user, but finally gave up last year once the wait for updates started extending beyond months and into years. They are horrendous for this now. Nexus all the way now. Still got a Samsung tablet. A flagship one. And it's stuck on Lollipop. I won't be buying another one ....)

i assume you have a Nexus 6p or 5x yes?

i had a 6p and found it boring tbh, yes Vanilla Android is nice...for a while... then i started to put ROMs on it left right and centre, again got bored of it

the screen isnt very good (they used a low quality screen) on the 6p and the camera not all that

i now have a S7 Edge and its much better than the 6p (Camera, battery, screen, features), i don't use the Edge at all, only got the model for larger battery and hit 7 hrs SoT many times.

back to topic as said many times, the OP3 is best phone around for the £329 price mark, order from O2 or Oneplus you get 14 days to try before sending it back so nothing to lose!

only reason why i don't own a OP3 is the camera and wifi calling, both important to me.

I prefer the Axon 7 over this but I think the Axon 7 will be slightly more expensive, rumours tell of prices of around £359...But there is still no word on UK stock of the Axon 7 so debating if I can cope with downgrading to 1080p from 1440p (coming from a LG G3) and losing my sd card. Plus this is a $400 phone for which we are being ripped off on once again. This should be £307 at current exchange rates. This is standard price so not really a deal as such...
Skymonkey
28 Sep 16 #172
Maybe hold out for the LG G5 price drop? It's inevitable it will happen, pretty much like the G4 and G2 before it... The battery and camera are deal breakers for me. I can cope with a 1080p screen, loved it on my G2 and if it means more battery life, which it usually does then that's a plus for me.

no SD is a deal-breaker for me despite the 64GB

why? - well if that internal 64GB goes kaput, then you loose everything!

if it had a SD, then one will occasionally be transferring important pics and/or other files for safe-keeping on a microsd card, also sending files to the phone via bluetooth or even wireless will be a pain too.

6p 64gb.

Bored of it? It's a phone?!?!? For me, it's a functional device. The screen is great IMHO. Ditto the camera. It does everything I need it to. Well. And battery life is excellent.

Not sure what other features are "much better" on your S7? Water resistance maybe. Can't think of anything much other than that? The screen is smaller on the s7 for a start. And I prefer a larger screen being a former Note user. The SD slot would be nice. But with 64gb, I can live without it.

But, more to the point for me, I just want it to last. There was nothing wrong with my Note 3 in terms of hardware. I was still plenty happy with it. But Samsung just stopped supporting it. My OH has an S5. After just over a YEAR wait, it finally got Marshmallow. I have a Tab S (as I say, flagship when I bought it), never had a SINGLE update (major one). Not one. It's still stuck on their (awful) Lollipop build. That's not acceptable.

My 6p? Nougat came out, I had it on the phone the same day. And yes, it'll stop getting updates eventually, but it'll get them longer, and quicker, than probably any non-Nexus phone. You got Nougat on the S7 yet? Nope. You likely to this year? Nope. When will you? It's Samsung, so God knows!

So I guess it's what you want? If you MUST have the newest phone constantly? Fair enough. But if you'd rather pay once for a good phone, and then have it last more than 6-12 months before updates become horribly slow or non-existent, then I wouldn't recommend anything but a Nexus now.

Phone hardware is good enough now that most people don't really need a new phone every 6-12 months. Those that do are mostly doing it for vanity reasons. So I'd rather get faster, long term, support.

Oh yeah, and if the fingerprint sensor for the Samsungs is still on the home button, it's garbage! The one of the back of the 6p is much better positioned! :stuck_out_tongue:

I called a couple of O2 stores today, just give you some ideas of where to get it tomorrow. NONE of staff in O2 stores knows about Oneplus 3.

One O2 store staff said "What is that? oh, it is a mobile phone. Sorry, we don't sell them",

Others are more knowledgeable, "It is a Chinese phone, we don't deal with them"

But the usual responses are, "No, I never heard of it, so we probably don't sell them"

Good luck getting one tomorrow.

EDIT: OK, one store actually knows about it, they say they won't be getting any stock until next month, here you go another month of waiting.

Got rid of my Tab S 8.4 for that reason, also Touchwiz, which I'm sure made it laggier that it ought to have been, and the ridiculous amount of bloatware which ate way too much of the 16gb on-board memory. Shame, because it had I think a great and I believe still unsurpassed screen. I won't touch Samsung now - and that's after owning and loving the Galaxy S2 phone, which I thought was genuinely groundbreaking at the time.

Just after I got rid of the Tab S, I'm sure it was announced that it would be getting Marshmallow, though (ironic as Nougat will be rolling out to a lot of devices in the near future)

Back to the OP3. It did have niggly issues shortly after launch, but they have been largely ironed out with regular updates. having owned the LG G4 before this device, I couldn't really notice the "downgrade" in screen resolution. What I did really notice was the much better battery life, which I thought was frankly rubbish on the G4.

Those high-res screens, which add very little to real-world usability as your eyes can't tell the difference (except maybe for VR, which I don't use) sure do drain the battery a lot quicker.

The OP3 is slicker than slick, the fingerprint sensor is sensational, and i can live with 64gb of memory. Perhaps the only thing missing now is waterproofing compared to the flagships, and I can live with that for around a £400 saving.

Perhaps a slight exaggeration on my part, but whilst O2 will handle the device, after 30 days they have no requirement to handle it instore, i.e on the spot replacement. Past that they will ship it to their repair centres, or more likely back it off to OP which is more the concern - their service is awful. Also worth noting if during this time O2 are under no obligation to provide a loan phone.

Not worth the hassle IMO.

Got to laugh at this "deal", especially the OPs post.

No Bloat: It will be running the same OS as one from One Plus
Unlocked: They are unlocked as standard
Confirmed to be Dual Sim: *Shocker* The only version they make is dual sim
Confirmed to be Unbranded: *Facepalm* see above!

I fail to see this as a deal, it isn't any cheaper. Sure you get easier returns and a shorter lead time for shipping, but that doesn't make it a deal, that just makes it more convenient.

As much as I love my One Plus 3 I've voted cold as this isn't a deal in any sense of the word.

Just to add my voice, saying this is a great phone.

Bought it direct from OnePlus shortly after release, having had the OP1 and OP2 (both of which a friend has bought.... and is really happy with them).

I don't make many phone calls... I have it for:

a) calls in an emergency
b) enabling me to be accessible as necessary
c) photography
d) internet access (for work and play)
d) mobile hotspot for my iPad.

PROS

a) beautifully-made
b) easy to operate (relatively!)
c) bloat ware free
d) very fast
e) dual SIM
f) half the price of the top-tier phones.. but comparable standard (give and take a little)
g) very, very fast charging (30 mins gives you a useful 80%)

CONS

I wanted to use the phone as a mobile mifi modem (I have a huge data package from EE, courtesy of HUK deals). But I also wanted a PAYG package from Three. Unfortunately, these two SIM cards don't play together well. The Three SIM card takes over the whole phone and won't let me use the EE data-only SIM. I've replaced the Three SIM with an EE PAYG ... and they work happily together. (The EE data only SIM will actually allow me to receive phone calls too.... which is an added bonus). This incompatibility issue is discussed on various online forums..... There is a solution..... but I didn't fancy the tinkering involved....).

I'm sharing this because I want to add my voice, giving a very definite thumbs-up for this phone.

The laughing was more based on this being a "deal". I agree it pays to check some of these things like locked status but other things like the fact its a dual sim phone and it was confirmed it was dual sim is quite funny.

As for your "dig" on the number of deals I've posted, there is a very good reason for that. The voting system on this site is flawed and open to all sorts of abuse. Setting aside that people vote for all manner of reasons, rarely because its a good deal. More often than not it comes down to the fact that they hate / like a brand or hate / like a product. Often something they have never owned, often something they'd never consider buying.

Take this "deal" as an example. One Plus 3 for the same price you can buy it direct from the manufacturer, identical phone. Saving = £0. Reaches 1100C+ in a day. Reason: Its a phone, people in this country love their phones.

Compare that to the Dyson deal I posted. Saving of around £100 or £140 if you are a previous Dyson owner gets to -155C. Sure people don't like Dyson as a person, company, brand, don't like spending that sort of money on a vacuum great, but that isn't how people should be voting on a site called "hot uk deals". As a deal with a decent % saving is how you should vote imho. It is how I've always voted and it is why I voted cold on this even though I'm a One Plus 3 owner who really likes the product. It just isn't a deal.

So that is why in 7 years I've posted 9 deals. When I see a product on offer for a decent discount I'd have to consider the brand, the hate for the brand or product before even bothering. Sometimes I think screw it (as I did with the Dyson deal) and put it up to try and help out someone who is in the market anyways, but cold deals rarely get seen unless you specifically search for them.

No it's not. 1440p screens aren't the drain they were on the LG G3. SoC's can easily power them now and the panel tech itself has been developed so they're more power efficient than a 1080p panel. Take Samsung for example, power efficiency of the panel in the Note 5 increased 21% from the 2014 Note 4, and 56% from two years before that if you were coming from the Note 3.

1080p screens aren't going to see these kind of gains as they're not being developed at the same rate as 1440p ones.

Nope. That ended years ago.

I use EE as my main SIM, but I have a 3 PAYG SIM for when I'm traveling, I can't use the 3 SIM as a second SIM due to the lack of 2G support.

Hence you can't use a 3 SIM in a non 3G phone.

I got a OnePlus One 64gb since the early launch. Hardware-wise, it is superb value, but not very impress with their software. Too many bugs especially on touch screen and battery issue. The issues fixed on one update, but re-appeared on the next update. Got one point I almost give up because I cannot typing a complete sentence without the need to make spelling correction due to touch screen issue. Also need root to fix the mic volume to usable level in Whatsapp. Couldnt connect to certain wifi although my other devices are connecting fine. One good thing is until early this month, I still receive the security update. Most issues have been fixed and the phone is pretty stable now after 2 years since its launch, but occationally I still got the phone random reboot itself.

Just my experience with OnePlus One, although might not relevent to this 3rd gen phone.

Little maths and economics lesson for you...

GBP -> Chinese Yuan pre Brexit.....9.8 Yuan = £1
GBP - Chinese Yuan post Brexit....8.8 Yuan = £1

This is a decrease in value of the £ of c10%
Therefore you'd expect the price in GBP to have increased by 10%. So, it should have risen from £309 to £340.
I'm guessing Oneplus hedge some of their currency cashflows, and have therefore been able to swallow some of the relative increase in GBP price, hence why its only £329 and not £340.

So stepped into the Gloucester O2 store, they had a display model.
The staff were unable to find out a handset or contract tariff price on their system. What they did advise was that on PAYG they want £336.
No one there seemed to have much info.

I've already had two of these oneplus 3s and had to return both due to a screen uniformity issue (which was even worse on the replacement oneplus 3).
The phone itself was pretty awesome for my needs and for the limited amount of time I had to use it.

TheUrbis

Same applies.

1GBP = $1.48 pre-Brexit (day before).

Today:

1GBP = $1.30

So, in USA, it's $399...

Pre-Brexit, that would have been £269.59, today that's £306.92 - still $399, but shows the £ is worth nothing.
theyiddo
28 Sep 16 #305
They are based in China. Many of their production costs will be in Yuan. If you want to refer to the US Dollar, then it went from about $1.45 to $1.32 (and even as low as $1.29). Pretty much the same exchange loss on GBP.

Totally agree with the above. Phone is great. Used Samsung's and Sony's and this phone is excellent, icing on the cake is dual sim's (home and work) or whatever. Phone is highly responsive, great camera. Couple of downsides are no memory card slot and Full HD display, but phone comes with 64gb of internal memory and display is still excellent - Personally I don't see why you need that many pixels on such a small screen in any case - its just overkill!

£32p/m on contract for 1GB data seems quite steep to me (u/l texts & mins). If phone is £336, this equates to £18p/m for the 1GB tarriff which is not that great.

Order and pay online for post or collect will be covered under DSR so 14 days returns no issues

It gets tricky when you go into store and buy over the counter it wont be covered under DSR as you are seeing what you are buying.....unless they have their own returns policy

This is the exact reason I bought it online. I got stung by Currys a few months ago - went to return something I bought in-shop and because it was open, they refused as it had to be "unopened, as new".

Ordering online always gets you some cover with DSR.

Collected from O2 shop, wouldn't budge on £10 PAYG sim card. Now at home with my Three chip installed, all working fine.

So ended up paying £17 more than if I bought it straight from Oneplus, but at least I have a physical store to take it back to if something goes wrong with the phone, which is what I wanted.

Guys just bought the phone from a store. I have your answers.

1) This is the FIRST unlocked phone O2 have ever sold. Confirmed.
2) The price is £336 + a required pay as you go SIM (min £10 topup)
3) The phone has dual sim.

Kind of annoying that the best smartphone cameras in the world are on the iPhone (WAY too expensive), Lumia 950 (irrelevant), and the Galaxy S7 (touchwiz/too expensive for an Android).
If only OnePlus spent more time making a brilliant camera module - and less time chucking in irrelevant specs (6GB RAM!!?)
ebilcake1
29 Sep 16 1 #387
The best cameras are not on iPhone's, unless you like less detail, under exposed images with a yellow tint, in which case the iPhone 7 has a great camera.

One thing people need to take into account before buying this phone is OnePlus's terrible customer service.

Fault with your phone? they will collect and repair but don't expect to see it again for a month, and even then you may find out they've repaired nothing. :-D

29 Sep 16 #389
This has warranty with O2... if they can't repair it within a reasonable time, they'll have to replace.
ebilcake1
29 Sep 16 1 #390
That still requires the phone to be sent to OnePlus for repair (Germany for Europe) and for o2 and OnePlus and communicate effectively, trust me they won't be repairing anything in a reasonable time.

I hope o2 are aware how many complaints they're going to get from selling this device.

o2 will very likely charge you for repairs after 30 days, for warranty repair it will be going to Germany with OnePlus where it may get lost. :-)

No high end smartphone has THE best camera. The Lumia 950/XL take the best photos. The iPhone 7 Plus has the best optical image stabilisation in video. The Galaxy S7/Note 7 have the best audio.
Also, you say the iPhone delivers the most underexposed footage - but from what I can tell and in the reviews I have read, it delivers a consistently accurate interpretation of the real scene.

All depends what you look for in a camera. But what is absolutely certain is that the OnePlus 3 isn't even close with its camera.

O2 CS are wrong as OP's own MD confirmed on Reddit AMA on Wednesday it's not locked and doesn't have any O2 bloat ware, regardless, given OP are happy for you to unlock the bootloader you could soon download a different ROM anyway, making locking the phone to O2 fairly pointless.

It would be interesting to know how O2 intend dealing with warranty claims etc, as surely returning the phone to OP and thenwaiting a month or so isn't going ro go down well with their customers?

This is a great phone to own given the price, virtually a Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge for half the price, just look at YouTube speed tests, it even destroys the Note 7.

Joking aside, was seriously considering ordering one of these and then saw this thread today. I would probably want to run it on EE 4G, though I'd consider others. O2 in store seemed to be saying I would need to buy the phone with their Refresh, then ring up and cancel it 24 hours later. Then I guess go to (say) EE, terminate my existing Orange contract and get a sim only deal from them.

Have I got the process right? And would I be better ordering from One Plus directly instead? Or choosing a different 4G provider? Advice welcome.

I can't see OP discounting this phone anytime soon as they already can't keep up with suppling enough phones, having stopped selling them recently in some countries so they could build up supplies again.

If it helps anyone, I managed to get one instore in Cardiff today, and got a student discount which brought the price down to around £310. Topper1900

How do you get a student's discount at O2, the only one advertised is 20% off Refresh monthly contracts? You'd hope store staff would appreciate the phones not locked, I wonder if this is the only unlocked Android phone O2 now sell?
little_green
29 Sep 16 #433
SO apparetnly i work for a company who is elegible for the o2 open discount.
which means I could get the op3 on refresh tarrif unltd calls & text with 3gb data for around 31 per month on 24 month contract. not bad at all.
HOWEVER i could buy it for 336 outright and stick to my giffgaff sim which is currently 12 per month and over 2 years that'd work out to 26ish per month, although its less mins but i get free gg-gg (which my family members are on) and i know there will be no unexpected bills.
of course the airtime plan could and probably will rise per year. of course giffgaff could increase their price too BUT at least with giffgaff i can leave when i please i'm not tied into anything.

i've never been on a contract....
tempted to go and enquire about this but know how useless the o2 staff are so probably just confuse matters more

I went to O2 store in Swindon Town Centre today, hoping to try the phone out and check how it feels in the hand. I was immediately caught by this O2 sale advisor before I even had a chance to have a look around. I said I am looking for oneplus 3 which was supposed to be available in store from Today. She looked at me like I was speaking to her in language unknown to mankind. She replied: Samsung? I looked at her and said: No, oneplus is the make and 3 is the model. She had absolutely no idea about the phone despite it being offered on O2 website. Anyway, they did not have any in store. And when I asked if she could check when it is going to be available in store, her reply was: it will be available when it is delivered. Ok, but when exactly? She repeated previous sentence. ... WTF? It was like speaking to complete idiot.

Just anecdotal evidence from having looked at various videos. In fact, that SuperSaf video demonstrates the iPhone's improved OIS vs the Galaxy. You can also see it in the following video at around 8 minutes

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3avakDaWDYU

Don't get me wrong, the Galaxy is a great cameraphone. But the iPhone delivers a cleaner/more colour realistic image....and it is far better at adapting to changing lighting. (That's not to say it is better in low light - because it isn't! But in normal light, it gives a nicer/less contrasty/less digital image). I dare say the video footage would also serve as a better base for colour grading.

Samsung definitely has better audio and low light photos though. & if you like contrasty/sharpened photos, then it takes better photos too.
wenttoabetterplace
29 Sep 16 #442
Remember that you can also cancel the Refresh contract at any time...so it's not like you're tied into a proper contract. You just have to pay off the device plan and cancel the airtime. No penalty for doing so.

You should also take a look at Life Mobile via USwitch. Runs on and owned by EE - better allowances than GiffGaff ... and half the price per month on a monthly contract.

I had a look at a model on London Oxford Street. Felt nice in the hand, premium feel, beautiful screen, blended glass to metal body. Liked the sturdy button positions. Snappy OS, camera seemed fine, snapped a few shots in the shop and there was no lag from pressing the shutter to taking the shot. Very nice phone. Sales person said it was contract only. Suggested I try other stores (they had four in today and sold them). Lovely phone and you'll certainly want to buy a case.

OK, so I'm looking at this phone and it looks like a good idea given that I need a new handset and this looks better than my current one by far.

I'm a little confused about the best way to purchase so if anyone has any answers- please help!

I am a student and have an NUS Extra card- (I don't however have a Unidays account as my college don't give photo ID so I can't get an account with them). Is it true there are discounts and how do you get them applied?

I currently have a GiffGaff sim and don't really want to give this up. Will I be able to use the sim or will I have to pay to unlock given that O2 seem to have some sort of hold on GiffGaff.

I am reading that due to distance selling regulations it's worth buying online- but does this cost more and if so how much more? I am in London and can get to an O2 store easily so there is little point in paying extra if I'm not really going to return it unless it's faulty.

If anyone knows- if you have to get an O2 sim, can this be sold on ebay as a credit or is it only good as a sim?

I know about the contract/refresh thing but I'm not sure I'll be accepted (poor credit score). If I am, is this cheaper and how do you go about setting this up (I've not had a contract for well over a decade!) eg; will I need ID and so on if I am buying from a store?

Based on samples I've seen the OnePlus 3 captures much more detail and exposure is generally better

iPhone 7 camera was compared recently to the Galaxy S7 on Phonearena and it wasn't even close, iPhone 7 shots were very dark and lacked detail while the Galaxy S7 shots were bright, vibrant and detailed.

Now when the OnePlus 3 was compared to the Galaxy S7 it actually did better than the Galaxy S7 in some cases with better exposure, detail and more natural colours.

iPhone 7 camera is below average for 2016, I can't believe they haven't fixed the yellow tint yet, it's been like that for how many generations now ? very poor from Apple.

I'd rather have the camera off the old Galaxy S6 than the iPhone 7.

I can confirm the Student Discount does work!

Went into the O2 New Street store in Birmingham, asked about the phone and student discount... Guy said we don't do student discounts but if you work for certain companies you can get a 10% discount. (Called O2 Open I believe) Unfortunately, the company I work for wasn't on that list, but my brothers company was on there. So I said I'll bring my brother in, and the guy said he'll check to see how to apply it and process it and lo and behold he finds the 10% student discount on the system as well.

None of the other staff were aware of this student discount so it's defo worth going in and asking them to check on the system.

Ended up paying £312.40 inclusive of the compulsory top up, but the hero who served me gave that to me as a voucher so could potentially sell that to whoever making the effective cost £302.40!

Hope this helps, I've attached the receipt as well!

I'm not happy some places are giving discounts and others aren't. I went to all 3 stores in my city and all refused to apply a discount to a payg phone saying it was airtime only. I even showed them the receipts posted here saying your othervstores can authorize so why can you and they said they don't feel comfortable doing that as it shouldn't have been done.

Am keeping an eye on this thread and thinking I'll contact O2 to make a complaint if I can grasp any money back bc it's not good customer service at tge very least let alone speaks volumes of their professional status as a company to offer one thing to some but not to all for no reason other than ...."ooops; we made mistake..."

I don't agree entirely with your statement, as it implies that the OP3 sceen looks poor once next to an S7. By total chance I sat it down next to my friends S7 Edge just a few hours ago, it's the second time I've done this comparison. Yes, the S7 has a better display, but it's not groundbreaking better, just slightly better. Interestingly though, the white balance was slightly better on my Oneplus 3, but to be honest that's neither here nor there, just an observation. Get a 4k image and things do change, a lot. But it's not exactly the norm for what you'll be viewing on the screen.

Finally, the S7 camera. That is VERY good, I must say. He showed me some low light shots he took in London, very impressive. Not that the One plus has a bad camera, it's actually pretty decent, but the S7 has a bit of wow about it. Still, it's not worth it for me personally, the oneplus 3 still bats it out the park on a value basis.

Ordered online at o2 and added one of tariff pay as you go that didn't add to the total amount i.e. total was £336. Got a confirmation when to pickup. Went in store and confirmed reference number - didn't have to pay anything extra. Phone has no o2 brand or anything and just added my non-o2 sim and all good! Loving the phone.

In my experience, they don't last long (as in days/weeks) they also don't protect from scratches against anything more aggressive than being sneezed at. Try it if you want, but it's your loss if it doesn't protect against things like grit, being left face downwards on a table or being found at the bottom of your bag alongside your keys (keys have a secret magnetic ability to find and adhere to your phone, screen first.)
