Confirmed that you can get the LG G4 for £225 when you buy a £10 PAYG sim. Cheapest elsewhere is £300 on ebuyer.

Will be looking to unlock it tonight.

Deal also live ONLINE now.. seems to be only red option though!

Enjoy!

People need to stop the fearmongering, so a guy posted on Reddit about motherboard problems that CAN, and I use the word loosely cause the phone to boot loop, but if that stops you buying a phone with this spec, literally one of the top 10 phones in the world and the best deal this side of 2015 with a years warranty then you're mad.

Any phone can have a fault on it, but this isn't a second hand phone off Ebay that if it goes wrong you're done for, you can just take it into the shop and have it replaced or fixed, so stop worrying about 506, 508, 510 and go out and buy it, otherwise you'll just be on here tomorrow looking at the next **** phone deal, and the day after, and day after that wishing you'd of bought this phone when you had the chance.

can you please check when your phone was manufactured ? On the side of the box and under the battery there should be a lable with a code that start with 3 digits (something like 506 505 etc), that's the date. I want to know because old stocks of this phone have the motherboard problem so I'd like to know if Vodafone's ones are a new stock.

Also, does anyone know if Vodafone's is a special model/firmware or just a regular 815h? Does unlocking the sim with a code void the warranty?

What code should be we be looking for to make sure we get the newer stock?

I'd also like to know if these are still all made in South Korea, the quality of manufacture there is usually excellent.

Hi sorry for the delayed reply - yes they had a few Red Leather left (like I got) and a couple in Metallic Grey. Good luck !

On reading others posts now I haven't had a chance to check the model number to see if it's one with a dodgy motherboard and am in work now until 6pm.

Last night it showed up on the product listing page at "£225 - was £xxx", but when clicking through to the product page it was full price.

For those of you about to go get one, remember you're the customer, if you dont want black say you dont, if they bring one out with the serial number under 509 ask for another one, you're the one paying, keeping them in business, so dont get mugged off, I got the red leather and 511 because i didnt want black, dont let them tell you any different and if they kick up a fuss ask for the manager, the promo is for all G4 variants, and you have the right to choose which one you buy not them.

It seems like:
1) It's not clear if a phone manufactured in Oct (510) would be safe from the motherboard issue. According to one comment: "I bought my G4 Oct.31 and it had a Mfg Date of Oct.2015. 3rd week Nov, got bootloop error. Sent it back to LG for Warranty repair." from here: https://www.reddit.com/r/lgg4/comments/3wir18/psa_if_you_purchased_a_g4_before_october_it_may/
2) There is another indication about the hardware version: when you look at the back of your box you should find something like MEZ66471902(1.0)BL, where 1.0 or 1.1 is the hardware version.

Hmmm... seems like there is a reason it's going down in price. I would avoid all toghether

Is this a worthwhile upgrade from a G2? I absolutely love mine but the battery is starting to fade. Plus not having a microSD means I'm somewhat limited. For me, the ideal phone would be a G2 with an MicroSD and replaceable battery and an excellent low light camera. The G4 pretty much seems to be this. Has anyone else jumped G2 or G3 to G4? Lastly, I was mulling the Note 4 but it seems to have a weaker camera so I was leaning G4.
Masteryates to FrugalFergal

I'm also a G2 owner and looking for an upgrade due to the SD Card issue. I was playing with my GF's G Flex 2 all last week and it was fantastic. The only criticism I had was the low light camera performance. The G2 did a better job on every single picture. Just bear in mind that the camera on the GF2 is the same as the G3. For that reason, I'd avoid the GF2 & G3 if the camera low light performance is important to you. I can't comment on the G4.

Both my mum and myself went from G2 to G4 phones and we both are loving the changes LG have made from the 2 models, mum is a higher user of the phone than I am but still gets more than a days battery life out of a charge I myself get 3/4 day before the need to recharge.

The changes you are looking above to be better from the 2 you will more than happy with if you decide to get the G4.

You will know with having had the L2 what you will get from an LG phone but with the LG4 its just loads better and the bonus is the price of this phone(mum paid £299.99 from ebuyer and was more than happy at that price) had she been paying this price she would have been ecstatic.

When I bought my G4 it was brand new and unlocked from Smartfone and registered fine with LG for warranty, it cost £260.
It was the black leather back type.

I got a refund, no issues, due to a SD card tray fault and I'm glad that I did.
Whilst the camera seemed to be good for a phone the build quality felt very cheap and flimsy, even the leather back seemed more plastic in its feel than leather.

all these posts about boot loops etc, as long as you bu the phone via proper channels and have warrant you have nothing to worry about, there are only a few reports of Euro models boot looping, the rest are in the States where carriers pout their own software on the phones (unlike the International LG G4)
GrrSalty to bigup
18 Dec 15 #220
The problem comes from a somewhat iffy motherboard that may or may not decide to go for a permanent nap at some point , I don't see what that has to do with carriers putting in their own junk.
MaximusRo to bigup
18 Dec 15 #228
Seems like it is a hardware issue, not a software issue, so carriers' modifications do not count.
Besides, UK carriers put there own software on it too.

I'm not sure...?
I am not suggesting that the phone isn't a good deal at that price, and if it was bought for the camera as a primary need then it was seems to be a phone of high consideration. All that I do know is that my initial impressions of the build quality was not great, considering the initial cost of the phone ,but perhaps it is indeed on par or better than most at 260 - I just have not tried out that many in that price region.
I didn't like the buttons on the back either, maybe I would have got used to that, but I was forever searching for them and pressing on the rear of the phone towards me seemed not intuitive.

I had considered a refurbished Note 4 from Argos for another 40 over the LG 4, that might suit me and my needs better.

My daughter enjoys her Grey LG 4 - although she wishes she had got a leather one as you get a spare back with those.

Still undecided though.

Both Techradar and Trusted reviews noted the build quality of the G4 as not being the best.

18 Dec 15 #229
Fair enough, so they may all be a gamble. I have no info on how likely the hardware fault is, or how serious if it happens, I was just following the earlier advice of basically "avoid anything less than 510."

I have no idea if getting the phone unlocked via a third party might cause warranty / return issues (via vodafone if not LG), but it may be a factor in decision making.

Further wild speculation: The idea that the unlockers can't find the IMEI of some phones might mean that the most recent batches (higher numbers) are harder to unlock as the IMEIs are newer and don't appear on all lists.

From that point of view, and taking into account the idea that the newer phones may not have a hardware fix, perhaps the earlier phones might be a better bet. Shrug.

I upgraded to Android M (6) recently on my G4 and don't be put off by the battery life for the first 3 days. After a few days it must learn how you use the phone and tailor Doze to work for you.

I Agree the back case makes it feel naff, Google Dbrand one of these on the back makes it feel much better, and protects the back, I normally get a leather one, takes 3 days to get, I normally install a rom to debloat the rom and use nova launcher, overall better then the note 4 in most areas which most reviewers on youtube agree, the note 4 is lacking behind not because its bad just because it was released 6 months before, with the buttons on the back, you do get used to it, after month or so you will love them

Initially I went to the St Johns store. The last one they had was a red leather one, however the S/N was 506 or 507.
The sales assistant called up the Church St store and got them to check the S/N number for me.
I think they had a couple with 510, either black or red.

Always lots of positive and negative comments but it's no coincidence that whenever a G4 deal comes up, it generates a lot of heat (usually the most in a day) and by far the most comments.

Everything that wasn't so great about the G3 is rectified in the G4. Talking about plastic backs is nit-picking as you can change it to whatever you want through ebay. I've had this phone for 2 months and the battery life is excellent, the screen is brighter and much more colourful than the G3 and the response time when you press an app key is amazing. I thought the G3 was good, but when it broke by accident I bought a G4 and it's simply amazing.

Mine is a 511 (1.1), and the previously linked eBay seller can't unlock it due to IMEI not being in database. I will try others.

I just realized that maybe 511 are considered safe only because they haven't been out for enough time to have that problem (since it looks like it takes at least some weeks to happen)
MaximusRo to Jijin2
18 Dec 15 1 #281
Yup, nobody can say for sure.
It's also possible that a 507 with 1.1BL hardware version might be a better batch than a 511 with 1.0BL hardware version, as maybe production date is not an indication that the hardware was changed (components in stock were used), while a newer hardware version might be a safer bet.

Just speculation, of course

I just got a 511 - no luck with the ebay unlocker chap, though polite, and very quick refund

I'm trying the more expensive cellunlocker as their tool said the IMEI was recognised and unlockable, but just got a message saying it was delayed whilst they try another database.

I don't know how the unlockers get their databases, but I'm guessing that they don't always have the most recent IMEIs, so unlocking may be tricky on new until they get more widely available...

Only guesswork based on available info though - I really don't know.

He was so adamant my friend left the store. What kind of customer service is this? We are paying them for the product and not the other way round.

Unless the IMEI ranges are published before use, he won't be able to unlock any 511 (November) phones then. It might be that they are only published some time after use...

I'm still waiting for cellunlocker dot net to check their alternative database, but I'm not optimistic.

I suspect that their checker on the sales page merely checks if the IMEI provided validates with the check digit rather than whether they have it - which is a bit naughty.

I am not sure if I have it ordered as I have not received an email and I hit the buy button 3 times - so hope I have not been charged three times.

Warranty is for unknown failures, not for know issues.
If you didn't deal with Vodafone customer care so far, you will have a nasty surprise, they are useless.
I returned a dead on arrival phone, which they do not accept to return in store if you bought online, months later, they still didn't refund or repair or replace or whatever.
Any attempt to talk to them was futile. In the end I involved MoneyWise magazine and they sorted it out.

Also, keep in mind that most people will:
1) Unlock it through ebay
2) Bootloader unlock
3) root it
4) Install custom ROMs

I am pretty sure one of two of those things are enough to invalidate warranty.

1. has anyone bought one today and found that it was unlocked already?
2. if i do open the box am i still entitled for a full refund within 14 days?

It's been available for unbranded/unlocked phones for a month or so. Vodafone are probably dragging their heels as usual with updates. Could be worth checking with LG Bridge rather than OTA, as that's how I got mine on (bought from Amazon).

LG Warranty is 1 year for phones bought from networks but 2 years if bought from retail stores ie unbranded.

Only assumption is that Network software takes a year off your phone. Why do Networks persist with bloatware - is this some idiotic management mantra from business school? One must differentiate failing that one must own the customer.

I suspect they have a couple of loosely connect systems. The online website takes order and then I suppose checks the inventory system for stock - why else does it take an age for it to move from buy order to order completed. Once the order is taken its then sent to fulfillment in batches. It's a horrible system no doubt cobbled together.
bigpappa
18 Dec 15 #442
Voda must have the worst stock checking, online order system of the major networks. It's not rocket science. You don't need a live system - heck it can be updated on the hour like o2. Argos shifts way more items than Voda and they have a live stock system for their stores.

In this day and age the Head of IT at Voda should be sacked on the spot.

Technically there's no modification at all.

Let me clarify: I didn't say the LG warranty. I said the warranty that Vodafone provides on behalf of LG. If you take your phone into a Vodafone store, Vodafone's repair partner will repair it. Officially, unlocking the phone will mean that Vodafone can refuse service.

If you go via LG directly they will use a different repair company I would imagine.

I am not trying to correct or challenge you was just wondering. It's like you technically break the speed limit if you go 71mph but how often will that be enforced.

One point that I have always wondered is why do operators add their own bloatware - is it really worth the effort? All these different phones running different version of the same o/s - what real benefit do you get?

I think everyone realises that there should be no operator mods on the o/s or firmware but no one within the network operators is willing to say it - like the emperor has no clothes.

My LG G4 was 510 manufacturer date. When buying it, in the 'message to seller' add your IMEI number and phone model number. I received a message a couple mins later to check my email and there was an email from the seller with the unlock code and instructions.

Good luck! If you need more advice, just quote me .

If it works keep it, if doesn't, get it repaired/replaced under warranty, don't stress out over it.

edit:
Just to add, you never know when something breaks down, newer models are not immune.
I once bought a Nexus 7, broke down after 14 months, my Nokia 5800, took 5 years to die and then I've got my Nintendo 64 from the 90s that works just fine.
Problems can occur with just about anything, there's plenty of ppl with older serials that are doing just fine.
Besides, you have two years warranty with LG, that's plenty of time for any faults to come forward.

Any phone can have a fault on it, but this isn't a second hand phone off Ebay that if it goes wrong you're done for, you can just take it into the shop and have it replaced or fixed, so stop worrying about 506, 508, 510 and go out and buy it, otherwise you'll just be on here tomorrow looking at the next **** phone deal, and the day after, and day after that wishing you'd of bought this phone when you had the chance.

since June first it started sending duplicate messages sometimes 5 at a time sent it to LG they manages to send it back without issue fixed and a massive dent in the top of casing so I had to send it again and before that the phone started bootlooping and there is no way to fix this hard reset doesn't work it has to have the main board out. It is with them now and they told me after 2 weeks of having this that they do not have any mainboards to put in nor do they have any refurbished grade A stock for a hot swap so I really do hope this doesn't happen to anyone here as they are useless at the warranty stuff and I doubt voda will entertain anyone with these issues and re direct to LG. Went into 3 shop today the customer service was a lot better today as in person by phone been passed from pillar to post. They said they will swap my now boardless broke phone with a new one next week but I'm not holding out hope and that will probably end up borked in some way too. stuck in 24 mnth contract or would have walked away like I said great phone if it works and that to me now is a big IF! there is definitely a reason why these have gone cheap so quick!

Vodafone online order system work as follows

You fill in an online order form with your details - height, weight, sex, dob, favorite food, name of your first born yadda yadda then the fun begins when you hit confirm. What happens next is magic straight out of Harry Potter.

First your details are sent to ten marketing companies and copied to an unsecured database hosted in Tibet. Then you see the beautiful mesmerising spinny whirry animation telling you its working really hard but the system is just trying to reboot for the fifteenth time before it gives up and puke all your data onto the internet and tells you sorry it couldn't process your order but its damn sure taken your money, data and first born as you didn't bother read the disclaimer - who does? So winging its way to you is not your phone but a jiffy bag your supposed to slip your first born into and then go to some random corner shop and drop off the jiffy bag, kiss your child goodbye and hope you didn't miss the return date of the day before yesterday.

I take it you haven't read any of the articles/comments I and others linked to:
"Hit my AT&T phone Wednesday night."
"I have T-mobile and this happened to me Friday night."
"It happened to me. On Verizon. Around 2 months ago... I was so sad...took it to Verizon.. They said go through LG. LG swapped out the main board."
"I have a telus H812, and just recently it got stuck in bootloop after a restart."
"Yes. I bought an unlocked international model in South East Asia and had this issue. LG repaired it by replacing the main board."
"I have an international version H815 (v1.1) bought in Germany brand new, unmodified in anyway, and it died in less than 4 months........exactly the same problem."
"My fellow Indonesian H818P users got hit by this issue. Some sites say that G4 early product (produced before October 2015) may suffer this issue, it will be any G4 with serial number 505, 506, 507, 508, and 509.
See your box to know your G4 serial number, seek for the first 3 numbers. 505 = 5 is the manufactured year, 05 is for the month. And so on...
Here, in Indonesia, if you have this issue, LG will replace the motherboard for free. My friends here have just started a petition so that LG Indonesia aware and take a further responsibility for not only replace the motherboard, but also replace the unit with a non bootloop prone.

I managed to order one on line during the short time they showed stock yesterday. Was a bit amazed when it was delivered at 9 o'clock this (saturday) morning.

Labels have 510 (1.1)BL and VDF on them - have to go back through this thread to see what that implies - lol.

The web site said 2-4 working days. No one would expect a next non-working day delivery and I had no notification - DPD are probably just trying to keep the decks clear when they can in the run up to Christmas.

Been through the thread and looks like 510 is the sweet spot, new enough not to have the possible hardware problem and old enough for a quick cheap unlock - nice.

Some boxes have both 1.1 and 1.0. Also, you can run your IMAI through this for more info https://imeidata.net/warranty/lg
Can you confirm you only have 1.1BL on your box? Some have both 1.0BL and 1.1BL, also check under the battery (long time since you could open up a phone and take the battery out, huh? )
Also try Settings/About/HW info

However, to save you the time of going through the thread, it means you are as safe as we can assume you can be (as the only semi-official info we have seems to imply only sets before September were affected).

1. Power on your phone with the SIM card of the network to which the phone is locked
2. Enter 2945#*71001# or 2945#*Model Number#
3. A menu will pop up, select Unlock USIM then Network
4. Enter code sent and press ok

Example: For LG G4 (LG-H815) please dial 2945#*815#

Not sure which to buy. The LG G4 or the Samsung Galaxy S6 ?
dealfinder123321 to timuk1
19 Dec 15 1 #604
I have had the S6 and its good but there is just too much missing. You dont have a micro sd card slot and you'll then have to pay a lot more to get a 64Gb version. From experience, 32Gb is not enough since the pictures take up a lot. The battery life is rubbish and it's non removable so you either have to carry a battery pack or something similar. The phone also has really bad multi tasking when compared to the G4 even though they both have 3GB of RAM. This is mainly samsungs fault since its been a problem with all there phones ram management. The camera's are very good on both and it does really depend in your taste. LG's camera is colour accurate whereas the S6 camera over saturates photos. Some people like it and others dont. If you like taking a lot of photos with scenery then G4 will better since theres manual mode and the G4 has better low light photography. It really depends on what you need but at this price I would definitely go for the G4. I already have one but my mum has been wanting a G4 so I'm trying to get her one for her birthday.
MaximusRo to timuk1
19 Dec 15 1 #625
S6 has no SD card slot, otherwise, any of them is a good choice if you ignore the G4 possible built issue.

I assume there is a significant price difference as well, so in the end, it is up to you how much you want to spend.

Just as a point of general information, the online stock checker should not be used or relied on - it's either complete fiction, or so out of date as to be useless on high volume items.

For example I traveled across London to get to the store on The Strand after the stock checker reported stock available. The store had none. Checked the online stock and it said it was still in.

I walked up to the Covent garden store which showed no stock, and they had it in. The sales guy said it had been delivered the day before.

You'd have a better hit rate consulting a psychic.
OnePlus to cheesemane

I can agree with you here, that the online stock checker is a load of nonsense. Checked on the website yesterday and every store in my surrounding area was supposedly out of stock. Slightly off-topic but my LG G2 that I got free from the Vodafone Black Friday deal last year has just gone tits up. It can no longer connect to WIFI or Bluetooth. This seems to be quite a common fault on the LG G2 and seems to require a new motherboard to fix.

If the LG G4 also has motherboard problems then I would be on alert. My G2 only seems to have a 1 year warranty. £235 is a good price but if it fails after 1 year that makes it very expensive....

That's quite disheartening actually. I've voted this deal hot, but have no intention of buying one though.

I don't know why, but I've always been under the impression that LG products really don't last long. This has stemmed from a few years ago when my grandparents' LG CRT TV and DVD combi failed just one day after the warranty period ended. Every since I haven't had much luck with them either. The only good phone I've had from LG is the LG Viewty.

Everything in the box was sealed (charger, battery and documents).
The phone had all the protection plastic on the screen and around the sides.
The were a few fingerprints on the side of the screen, probably the sale assistant's from when he was checking it.

I don't know if its worth risking taking it back and ending up with a faulty one or a non-red leather one.
I guess I'll sleep on it.

What's annoying about Vodafone's official unlock is that you need to have a sim from them active on the phone for 30 days and the 20£ to pay must be from that sim's credit.

Did anybody else's come with the seal broken?
It's strange why they would do this when it's not a contract phone. The sales assistant even asked me if wanted her to set it up for me and said no just leave it as it is. Then i get home to find seal broken!

Guys with the 511 phones, it seems that an eBay unlock is not currently available but do you think this because the IMEI's are too new or something? I'm just curious about whether we'll ever have a working alternative to the expensive Vodafone unlock for £20. I don't mind waiting, even if it takes a few months for something to come around.

Yesterday I bought a 511 from Vodafone (Trafford Centre) and the lad in store said there was none in the arndale as I needed another. There was 1 other in Selfridges (Trafford Centre) but when I went to buy it late last night they said they couldn't convert a contract to PAYG

Went back this morning and spoke to someone else and he said no problem! There were 2 in stock. One Red Leather and one black. I took the red leather. Both were 507.

Be lucky to get any stock right now!

Since code works till 510 and what people said about databases refreshing every 30 days I'd say it's just a matter of time. Since my old moto g 2014 that I'm still using is going strong for me it's not too annoying to wait but for someone that needs to use the phone straight away it's a pain.

My 507 had seal in tact
My 511 seal was broken but I'm fairly certain the sales assistant broke it as he showed me the phone. I can't be 100% whether it was already broken though before he showed it me though. I wasn't paying full attention! I personally am not bothered about it though. We have full warranty on them

Thank you so much for the response, i do appreciate it because i was rather worried. Paying another £20 would still make this an awesome deal, but of course i'd be rather disappointed about doing that. Anyway, it sounds hopeful that we should have an unlock for these latest devices soon. I bought the 2013 Moto G which was locked to Tesco Mobile, and managed to unlock it on my third attempt with an eBay seller for something like £1.70.

People need to understand one thing and thats is out of all the phones made, there are only a very small minority that may have a problem. These problems exists with so many things. I would say out of 100% only 1% of the phones might have an issue. I have had my G4 since August and there has been no problem. So no need to worry about this and if anything does happen, LG warranty covers it.

When I bought two of the phones yesterday the assistant took them out of their "safe room" at the back and brought them over to the table where I was sat and broke the seals himself to show them to me, without me asking. It did sort of surprise me but unless they have a demo one lying around then I suppose it is something they need to do, although he did it to both of them - but you would want to see them before buying and I had confirmed at that stage that I was taking them both .

If they break seal in front of you that's fine but to find it broken when you get home, they didn't get it out in the shop (unless they did under the desk) who knows when it's been broken. Makes you a bit uneasy but as KM says we have warranty.

OMG. People stop panicking, 511 are new phones. All it takes is a little bit of time for IMEI databse to update. Might be even tomorrow! Just ask one of the ebay sellers to inform when they notice database update. Or even leave imei with them and ask them to let You know when they can send You unlock code so You can pay.

When you put WhatsApp onto the phone it wants to send a text to the phone number on that phone. It auto-detects the SMS in order to validate itself.

It's enough to delay updates (as they will only come from Voda and not directly from LG). Also, rooting and removing the Voda apps will disable Over The Air updates.

I placed an order online at about 3:10 yesterday. I wanted it delivered to the store because I am going away before christmas and I thought that would be safer in case it came in late. Anyway I got an email from Vodaphone to say they had received the order but nothing since. I checked online using their tracking system and the status has not changed.
Anybody else in this situation?

Wish I went for home delivery now..

The email I got srtaight away said "We're checking the details of your order (WEB-00000001********), and will be in touch shortly with an update" but never got another update since then..

I placed an order pretty much same time as you, all I have got is the screenshot of the order - didnt get an email - but at the time I ordered I was doing an online chat and the lady confirmed the order had gone through.

It's a very poor ordering system.

I used the ebay link (£2,59 ish one) and have used my unlock code  (I have a Metallic Gray 507)

Currently upgrading to Marshmallow. Install LG Bridge on your PC and it will update your phone. It's doing it at the moment (1,58GB) so will have to wait and see if Vodaphone stuff gets removed.

Just been on chat with Vodafone and I asked about if I unlock my phone from a 3rd party will it void the warranty.
This was the response:

Pankaj: No, it won't void your warranty.
Pankaj: Please ignore above response as it has been sent automatically.
Pankaj: If you get it unlocked from Vodafone then your warranty won't be void.
Pankaj: If you unlock it from anybody other then Vodafone then your warranty will be void.

Seems fishy.
I told him that other representatives have stated it does not void the warranty and he insisted that was the wrong information and he was giving me the right information.

Its just ridiculous, different people keep giving different answers.

Nothing happens, unlocking doesn't affect anything.
But rooting is usually done to have access to system files and that would cause problems with over the air updates, but there area other solutions to update (although more complicated).

The seal on mine was broken too and I went back to exchange it but they had no more in stock. The employee said that it would have just been opened to show a customer, most likely the different colour options or how it feels to hold because they only have the plastic/dummy LG G4 on display. He said it is definitely not a returned or used phone because the Vodafone policy is to send used/returned phones back to headquarters. He said I can come exchange it when they have more stock but I had a look at it when I got home and everything in the box was still sealed and the phone had all the protective covering, so I'm not going to bother exchanging it.
