Got the papers ready then read Microsoft terms and conditions. If they want they can refuse to sell you Windows or any other software. I got paranoid that they could stop me using Windows on any machine if they wanted.

Hi there - on the off chance... I'm about to start suing Microsoft over my tablet (long story short - it developed a fault, Acer fixed it, downgraded it to Win8.1, I followed Microsoft's instructions about putting Win10 back and those instructions have bricked the thing).

Does anyone by any chance have a screenshot or a cut-n-paste of the exact wording of the advert for the tablet on Microsoft Store website from back last September?

I've not had this WIFI dropout issue, although, I never let mine go to sleep to be honest. I set to it to shutdown when the lid is closed, standby times aren't great on these windows tablets, not like an iPad etc and it boots so quickly from off! Has any tried charging the tablet using a USB to DC cable? They sell them on eBay for £4....I'd like to use my portable charger to charge it, albeit much slower than the 12v/1.5a wall plug charger....just don't want to wreck it trying! 5v/1.5a would work to slow the rate of discharge at least :smiley:

For £100, I still rate it as an absolute bargain, but upgraded to Windows 10 I have a similar problem with the Wifi connection dropping when the computer goes into standby.

It's no big deal for me - I going to wifi settings, disconnect and then reconnect, and all is fine again.

This happens to me as well when the PC wakes up from sleep. The two solutions i've found are to restart the pc or go into device manager and disable to network controller and re enable it.

I haven't upgraded to Windows 10 but the constant loss of wifi on this device is driving me mad.....so much so that I hardly pick it up anymore if I need to surf the web.

No ts or audio issues for me, but the intermittent non-responsive touchpad is driving me nuts. I notice a few others mentioned TP issues, is there a driver/software fix? Thanks.

I hadn't checked the switch but my alternative laptop is suffering, every mouse click is now a double click... Not the least bit annoying...

Yeah you have to link your paypal account, if you click pay me on the front screen it shows options and you can link from there, you have to wait 4 days though until they've carried out security checks, can also do BACS transfer too :smiley:

Might have expired by now, but there was a deal earlier today for Tesco knocking one out for £2.

Its Microsofts choice along with quidco to offer the cash back. There is obviously a record of a purchase at Microsoft and there is tracking history that quidco have, I don't understand the problem, the proof is there, no matter what a 'third party' says or does.

Quidco have a tracking processing company that operate in Europe who handle all the tracking data. I would imagine that the failed uplift on cashback value is down to that company. I can't really see how MS has much to do with it - other than confirming that the cashback is legitimate.

Who knows. I'm confident that the cashback will come through though :smiley:

I assumed that the "third party" Quidco are referring to is Microsoft.

Quidco said the uplift to the correct price had failed because of issues with a third party. If that is true, then neither Quidco nor Microsoft are at fault.
Quite honestly, I wouldn't have even bothered tweeting them if it wasn't for people on this thread becoming overly worried (fear is infectious; ask Dangerous Dave Cameron!).
As ever, a bit of patience will be rewarded with the anticipated cashback.

Agree that Microsoft are appalling and this is almost certainly down to them. Simple things like not being able to cancel before it's despatched. The other thing is the experience of getting Windows 10 on there. Support repeatedly hanging up on me because it wasn't straightforward. Then trying to tell me they were doing me a massive favour by generating a brand new Windows 10 key for me, when it was actually the least they could do.

I do wonder if Quidco are going to end up eating this expense... But ultimately they offered it to the end consumer and they need to deliver.

I think (and hope) a lot of this is premature - I'll be one of the first to start a MCOL should this not pan out, but from the outset it's been clear this would take time, and it looks like we're gonna know one way or the other in the next few days.

I've been impressed with Quidco - they've put their necks on the line, been very clear, and given constant assurances on this. If it doesn't work out, they're going to be in a very difficult position.

I hadn't had to deal with Microsoft until buying this laptop from their store, and from the consistently atrocious customer service I've encountered, it seems clear to me that this is Microsoft trying to shaft everybody.

Jeez everyone needs to calm down - Rosie and other Quidco representatives have told us we will be paid and we have had multiple reassurances in this thread we will with the last one yesterday. As far as I'm aware all of us have also had this track whether for the incorrect lower £1.67 or the £100 with some even having had this paid to them already. I'm confident this will be sorted before Christmas but my life doesn't depend on it although if I don't get the £100 at all then I will kick up a BIG fuss :smiley: Oh and no I don't work for Quidco!

I suspect "cashback is not guaranteed" wouldn't hold up in a small claims court anyway. That should be covering failure to track or breach of T&Cs, not something like this which is totally within their control. The reassurances given during the period when these could have been returned would leave a very bad taste.

Maybe it's time to have a campaign for Martin Lewis to call for regulation of cash back sites, too many times people not getting the money.

Just thought I’d add my tuppence to this thread.

Similar to those on here I purchased the Acer Switch 11 a week before this deal was posted (see earlier posting on HotUK for the Acer), when the cashback was £75 with Quidco. This tracked immediately but at £1.71.

After waiting for the initial returns period to end (and a little more) I attempted to raise a claim with Quidco for the higher cashback, only to be greeted that I was outside a 3 week time period for the vendor for making such a claim.

Having heard nothing I fired off an e-mail to Quidco customer services at the end of November and received a reassuring e-mail back stating that the amount would be corrected once the transaction was confirmed.

It will come as no surprise that having logged into Quidco this evening the cashback is now confirmed to pay at £1.71. I’ve now logged an incorrect cashback amount claim for the missing amount. (It even allowed me to select the £75 as the rate to claim, so Quidco are aware).

While I accept that cashback is never guaranteed, the level of cash back offered for purchasing items on the Microsoft Store (there were also other deals posted for a TV Wireless Display & Arc Bluetooth Mouse via TCB in October) will have influenced many. It would appear that on the evidence to date the cashback rates advertised for this vendor unfortunately cannot be relied on.

Litigation is easy in a small claims court - and Quidco do not have a leg to stand on given Rosie's frequent reassurances.
Just be patient :smiley:.

Disappointing that there is "another" technical hiccup. There is never a technical hiccup that pays people out too early or for too much is there?

Lets hope they don't drag this on any later than next week. If they drag their heels again, everything on this site that involves quidco should be linked to this thread then maybe they will fix the hiccup with a bit more urgency.

I got the above email on my quidco account, mine has confirmed at 1.71 though so it's not looking good! I'll be fuming if I don't get the £100 cashback after the re-assurances etc!! :neutral_face::disappointed:

Due to a processing issue with a third party the sales have not yet uplifted, so sales are still showing at the lower amount. This incident was completely out of our control, but do be assured that we're in communication with the third party to have these uplifted as quickly as possible.

We have been informed that this should happen by the end of next week, if not sooner.

I opened a ticket with Quidco, not a cashback claim, just a call and asked to clarify the situation, the response is below;

I'm sorry for the inconvenience and confusion this problem has caused

At the moment Microsoft are taking around 2-3 months to confirm cashback, and we are always on the case to ensure your cashback is paid to you as quickly as possible. Once your purchase has been confirmed, your cashback will update to the correct amount.

Create a claim / support ticket and highlight their error as there is no way any of us should be getting £1.67 cashback. I'm still awaiting a reply to my latest update to my claim but it's in black and white on their own ticket system if we bought this before they pulled the offer we get the £100

I have to say I feel really annoyed about this. Normally id never go for a deal that involves cashback from quidco as I know it doesn't always come through, but I figured I'd go for it and cancel the order later if it looked unlikely.

Literally the only reason I didn't cancel my order was because of the guarantees from the quidco representatives that posted here that it was definitely going to come through and they'd spoken to Microsoft and it would be honoured and all that. They even sent an email out to everyone that had purchased this.

If quidco weren't in a position to guarantee we'd get that then they shouldn't have told us otherwise.

Yep it was the windows versions. Windows 10 pre-installed and ready to go. For £100 with a 2 year warranty it's great. Completely agree about the screen. Laptop wasn't for me but if it was i don't think i could face using that screen either.

I'm still on the hunt for something for myself, but with some of the deals on skylake motherboards may consider upgrading my pc instead.

Ooof...it's also a Chromebook. Big disadvantage IMO.

I personally don't feel like I've been screwed by this deal. Cashback is processing in its usual way - and there is a date on the cashback page that says when a resolution should be provided.

For the screen alone, I would FAR sooner have the Switch 11. Add in Windows 10, and it really is much the better buy.

But yes - with a bit of patience, this deal will come good!

*Edit - looks like the 100S has a Chromebook and a Windows option. So assuming you got the latter, it was a good deal. I still couldn't face using a non-IPS screen...but it was a good price!

Because i don't like to see big companies take advantage of people. I did send mine back, but you told me to keep it and get acer to fix it. So i've an interest in how this plays out and see whether i made a good decision.

Btw i got the lenovo 100s for £100. Screen is nowhere near as good as the acer switch but for £100 it was a bargain and a 2 year guarantee with John Lewis.

I don't think cash back will be paid for another 4 months now just contacted quidco they promised cash back at the beginning of November. It didn't so I naturally contacted them and now they are saying another 4 months. I personally don't know what the problem was as we all contacted them and they contacted Microsoft and assured us. But now they are dragging it out. Why ? Why another 4 months if it was going to take that long they should of informed us why write on date and then mislead us. Like I said conversation were made already about cash back from a lot of us so they are aware of the issue.

It's not about being able to afford an item (or not).

The reason so many of this device were sold was because it was offered as a deal (Switch 11+Cashback) and as a consumer, we have the right to receive what is advertised.
Quidco also stated that the cashback will be honoured (both on this thread and via Quidco PM).

Let me put it in a way you can understand Garnett.... We as consumers in the United Kingdom legally expect to receive services or goods as advertised.
Just to educate you a little further, the *cash back not guaranteed* small print @ Quidco is only if the consumer breaks any of the terms of the agreement (using discount coupons or returning an item........).

Bottom line is, we as consumers have honoured our part of the agreement of sale.
We expect the same from the vendors.

When I look, the deal states, "Found 1 month, 3 weeks ago" which by my reckoning is a week short of two months, and your latest complaints started some time ago. Calm down. Wait a bit longer. If it gets to mid-way through December and there's still no news, then you'll find that the rational people on here will be more sympathetic. Right now, you're just coming across as desperate and impatient. Also, on this deal, as with all other cashback deals, there are plenty of warnings about how the cashback is never guaranteed and that if you will need to rely on the cashback you should not go for the deal. Your posts make it pretty clear that you're desperate for the cashback, so I'd recommend avoiding deals like this in the future. It's only a deal if you can afford it.

This week I have had blatantly tracked and acknowledged purchases cancelled by Quidco, I have been ripped off with purchases confirmed but not paid. Quidco has gone down the toilet in the past couple of months.

I'm guessing they are struggling for money. I'm also guessing quidco will be defunct by feb or march next year.

I had a online chat. Quidco raised a claim £98.33?? Not £100. Convinced me that it will take 4 months as this is the procedure!!!!!

A giant company MS has payment tech problems even to confirm purchase for quidco in this automation age for so long.
As someone said on here, I am not holding much hope! Hopefully it will as I use both cashback websites for the best outcome, however, I have noticed a lot more declined on my quidco! None on topcashback and never had to raise claim or contact them. Hence, I am using them more nowadays unless things change.

At the outset, it seems they said it would take 2 months, and that was about a month and half ago. Now they're saying it'll be sorted in 2 weeks.

I've got to ask - because I'm fascinated by the grabby entitled nation we seem to have become - are all the people clamouring for "my money", the same people who butt their cars into the queue in the adjacent lane without indicating, and then speed up when they see a car indicating to join their lane to stop that car "pushing in"?

Quidco are really bad I always use topcashback and have never been disappointed. Quidco on the other hand I stopped using then around 2013 I think and bought one thing using them in 2014. I only used them for this deal and I wasn't really confident in using them but I thought I would risk it. It seems like it will be a long process to get this cashback if we ever get it in all fairness. Another problem is the tracking it's still tracking at a lower amount. Everytime I have used topcashback they increase the amount after a few days. It never been the case where the lower amount is still shown and then the raise the money at the end. Iam not that hopefull in all fairness

Interesting that when this was front page on hotdeals a "quidco rep" was posting on here. Now the post is much harder to find quidco are silent.

If quidco don't get their act together you should all start posting on any deals that involve quidco how you are still waiting for them to sort this out.

Does anyone use skype or facebook messenger video call? I dont know why but it looks like its zoom in all the time. Also any new drivers for it? I see acer switch 10 has from 10.2015 and out switch 11 they are from 2014 which is quite old. Camera issue might be driver related.

Hi. I reported the problem to acer. I just have had chat with microsoft and they cant help me in any way as it is after 30 days warranty. They advised me to contact acer and they should fix it for me. Now im waiting for a call from manager (acer). I hope he can help. I dont want to send it back again and wait another month. I also dont get why there is only 30 days warranty for replacement from microsoft, very poor customer service.

Your contract is with MS. You reported the problem originally to MS within 30 days right? They took undue time to repair with loss of use during this time. You are still not happy right? Ask for a repair/refund/replacement as the problem has been there from the outset and not fixed. Otherwise write to the CEO and known fault.
If your happy for them to re-repair and your still not happy then same procedure until you are happy and you have given it a go with repairs.

Have you contacted MS website support and what have they said?

My order date is 30.09.15 so its over 30 days unless it is 30 working days. I try to give a call to microsoft and see what they say as acer customer service is useless

Get in contact with them straightaway as still within 30 days to ask for a new unit and tell them you are not happy with the repair via Microsoft website support and as you said speak to the Manager or mark chats to speak with manager. As you have contacted them for the original problem and not fixed it may be a repair or refund. Since it seems a known issue perhaps ask for a refund and send the unit back. Also relieves you from cash back issue.

The touch pad is rattling on mine the Base is hollow so it has that hollow feel when you use the touch pad other reviewers have mentioned that as well.

Finally after 29 days i have got my acer back. Item has not been fixed. Touchpad is rattling as it was! All looks the same. They changed lcd panel as they found it faulty lol for me this part worked fine. Thay also bave put a sticker over the screw on docking which says "accer warranty void if removed" so i cant open it to upgrade my hard drive as i will void the warranty. I gave them a call and they said i have to send it back for re repair. What a joke. Tomorrow i gonna have a chat with Mr. Manager. Does anyone have any advice what rights do i have?

I don't need convincing, i'm happy not to be dealing with either of those two companies as it saves money on aspirin. Just hope everyone gets sorted.

I don't think it's other peoples expectations but the fact quidco listed the date as early Nov and now it's all changed.

Looks like i had a lucky escape with this. Now this isn't front page news quidco and ms seem to be playing games.

I was using Topcashback for my Bespoke Offers purchases as cashback was paid out within a week or two. I made a few by accident using Quidco. Two months on and they're showing as payment by December.

This cashback deal was very high profile, enough for Quidco to come on here and reassure everyone. They should have been on top of it, no reason why it would now be saying (as mine does):

I now have 10 different transactions in this state, dating back to April. Seems the norm now; HotUKDeals advertise it, Quidco take to commission when we all go via it, then they rarely pay out.

Did anyone send his/her laptop for repair to acer? I did becouse of rattling touchpad and after 18 working days they called me today to say if they don't fix it till Tuesday then they will send me brand new laptop. I did explain to them I'm not happy with it as I had everything set (drivers, windows 10 etc). The most stupid thing is the tablet part is 100% good so all they need to do is exchange for new docking and sent it to me but they can't lol so after 3 days of use I'm waiting 24 days and probably after a month I end up with new unit. Does anyone know if I can get refund and don't accept replacement from them? As after that time I end up with another laptop. That's just was away too long to replace touchpad or give me new keyboard. Do I have any rights in this case?

My Quidco tracking wasn't doing much so I updated some details in the claim / ticket and mine has had the status of Sent to retailer for a few days so hopefully that is promising!? As for the Switch 11 the family seem to like it and Windows 10 seems rock solid on it to me as it gets well over 5 hours usage on a full charge.

I know quite a few people said they tracked at the correct amount, but has anyone actually received the £100?

I thought it might be a wide scale problem as where they might require our email purchase confirmation details otherwise why would they ask for it when they have already notified us to sit tight.

Why did you get in touch with Quidco?

Haven't really kept up - Is it fair to summarise that:-

1) Quidco have said it will track but will take a while
2) Some people couldn't wait and so hammered on at Quidco and may have already have been paid
3) Some other people also don't want to wait/want to jump the queue, and so are currently hammering Quidco
4) Some of those people have managed to get their claim seemingly bumped to the back of the queue
5) Most people are waiting quietly and patiently because there's nothing so far to suggest there's any problem, just that, as was flagged from the start, this will take time.

Mine also tracked but at £1 something. Annoying as I ordered more or less towards the start of the deal

I've just contacted customer service at Quidco too and they have raised a claim at their end today taking my name, email, order number and category? as requested and as I was going round and round. I was notified it is like a new transaction and will take 4 months to validate/NOT, although mine is tracked from the outset and screenshot taken!!

On my account it says:
"Status Update 30 September
We're currently processing your transaction, and a resolution is expected within 2 days".

I've just contacted customer service at Quidco and they asked me to send them the email confirmation of my order and they will look into it

mine still has the 5th as the payment date and still tracking at £1.71

I installed 32bit Windows 10. Was that correct? I don't think I've got a platform driver pack that's definitely for 32bit. Any chance of another link?

Make sure you install the platform driver package. Use the download link I provided way back in this thread (I dont think the Acer website has all the drivers you need)

I sent my one to acer as well as touchpad was rattling a bit but it was enough to do it, also the tablet part does not seat in the docking very nice (gap on one or the other side all the time between tablet and dock). I dod get a respond today after 2 weeks! The have got parts to fix it and i will have it back next week. I hope all get fixed in immaculate condion as it was. I also did mension about missing cable to plug the hard drive in the dock. We will see if they add one inside. More updates coming soon...

Nope, they don't do white. I also imagine the idea of it being second hand would also be a bit offensive to your missus....so probably best to stick to inferior/brand new rather than going second hand :smiley:

Try and get an Asus S200e. There is an i3 variant and a 1007u variant which are both v.v.capable. It also takes full size SSD drives, and has 4GB's of RAM as standard.
You can pick them up for anywhere between £130 and £160.
They are v.v.reliable

(I did one up for a customer recently who had one running on Windows 8.1. I stuck in an OCZ Arc 480GB SSD, flashed a new bios, and upgraded to Windows 10. & it is now ridiculously fast. I have it outputting to their 1080P monitor. It works great).

That's pretty impressive service from Acer. I picked up an asus X205TA in the 20% off ebay promotion. Cost me £110 for a "customer no fault return which has been checked and repacked as new".

When i recieved it, it had a big scuff mark down the side like someone had walked into a wall with it and dead pixels. Needless to say that's gone back as well.

Think i'll pop into Argos and pay £180, as currys/pc world dont seem to have any unless they are saving them for black friday.

Just an update on this.

I still haven't received the money into my PayPal account yet.

It's in my Quidco account and I pressed the withdraw (to PayPal ) button on Oct 15th

On Oct 19 Quidco said they were having technical problems but they would send it on Oct 22.

Wasn't in PalPal at end of business on Oct 22nd so logged in to Quidco on Oct 23rd and on my home page, under "Available for payment " it said that "There is a problem with your account, please contact customer services".

So I contacted them and today, Oct 26th I got the following reply:

Yea if its vanished redo the drivers like wenttoabetterplace said.

If its connected but poor speeds, its most likely due to 2.4ghz interference which is very noticeable these days now everything has some form of wifi.

Go into Device Manager > Network Adapters > right click on the wireless adapter, click uninstall, then tick the box to 'delete the driver software for this device'.
Then load the wireless adapter from the drivers package that you should have downloaded when upgrading to Windows 10.

If anyone has been having any wifi issues like me.... under adapter properties then configure, advanced - Enable Antenna diversity and Multi-Channel concurrent. I was getting dodgy speeds 0.5 to 5Mb now seem to be good at 20Mb.

I managed to get Windows 10 installed last night! - just did a clean install straight off USB and installed drivers, had no problems at all, Wireless worked without drivers and no keyboard problems.
After that getting the Activation was a nightmare, took me 4hrs! speaking with Microsoft on telephone, chat and e-mail but in the end it took the tech guy 5 minutes to resolve - you just need to try to the right team!
Windows 10 makes a big difference for me, HDD useage down from 18GB to 8GB! :laughing:

On the 6th of Oct it was tracked for 1.00 for a claim amount of 100.
On Oct 14th Quidco released the 100 into my account.
Oct 15 I withdrew the 100 into my paypal account.

I've only ever had two parcels go missing, one was a HTC due back from repair other was a pair of ugg boots for missus Christmas both via UPS. They obviously have a portal somewhere in the back of the van that sucks desirable items to an alternative universe.

No, i went to paypal 9 days ago because the failure to cancel before item has shipped, the open box, the damaged touchpad, the lies on live chat, the so called no hassle returns, the false description, the quidco thing, the price manipulation afterward all made me believe this firm cannot be trusted.

Are you installing the manualy?
Have you downloaded zip file that is called - Platform Drivers_Intel_10.18.10.3383_W81x86_A?
Extract it somewhere on pc or usb stick and in extracted folder you will find 3 files (incl one exe file) and a folder called drivers.
Install those drivers manually.
How to do it?
In each folder thare will be a file witch has file type - setup information.
Right mouse (touchpad) click on file and from menu choose install.
For example - Audio folder - right click on file called "isstrtc" and left click on install.
Quite simple.

Hi ya, ive followed your details, windows 10 is activated but i can't load the acer windows 10 drivers so not alot works, help please

UPS agents where I dropped off the package don't seem to be on the phone. Email response from UPS is not helpful. I couldn't get through and speak to anybody - these automated answering machines are a pain. No one seems to know where the parcel is at the moment so I've asked for compensation.

I've also been on the phone with Microsoft Store for about 45 minutes. They have asked to see a copy of the receipt I got from the UPS agents and have promised to phone me back tomorrow morning.

I don't think I'll bother with MIcrosoft Store again

Yes, I know. I did ask the lady I spoke to why I had to phone and she said she couldn't. I've now emailed UPS UK asking where my parcel is and when I can expect it to be delivered.

I might be biased because i'm really annoyed with microsoft but shouldn't they be chasing up where it is? They are the ones with the contract with ups, and they are the ones that have paid for the return. So you've done your bit. It would be a bit different if you paid for the return and used your own courier.

Yes I printed the prepaid label and when I click the direct link its showing 'Order Processed Ready for UPS' .
The reference number on the return instructions email and the customer drop off receipt are the same.

You checking it from the email from ms store titled shipping label? On there it gives you your package number and a direct link to check it. I assume you put the prepaid label on it, or did you request labels more than once and it's linking to the wrong one?

I think we can skip all the hassle with USB otg.
Just download windows 10 32bit on usb stick.
Boot from usb - wipe everything, install windows 10.
If keyboard is not responding keep touching touchpad every (lets say 5sec) when windows is starting and thats it it will work and you can install all needed drivers.
Now for activating new windows.
Go to live chat with advisor explain what you`ve done and after 10-15 minutes you will be up and running on activated windows 10 (guy will ask to open command in administrator mode and he will ask you to put a command that will show a windows 8 licence key - he will confirm that its legit and will take control for a moment of your laptop)
I think its easier than dancing with usb sticks cables etc.

No axe to grind here. I have a life and joined the upgrade party late, but posted the open/close lid workaround as soon as it was also confirmed by two of my buddies. Having scanned some of the comments made by your buddy andy_sym, he for one would have appreciated the no-OTG-required workaround info, as may anybody else reading this thread still considering w8-w10 upgrade - assuming they can jump past all the misleading earlier posts and haven't otherwise lost interest / given up / sent it back. Bizarre thing is, I feel it was more responsive running win8 and may return mine to win8. Although the Acer's spec is marginally better on paper, it's certainly less responsive running w10 than my Linx10 running win10.

Not sure why you've got an axe to grind. We're talking about a 99p USB OTG cable.

Nah, I'm not the first that had no requirement for OTG, master10 mentioned no requirement for OTG pages back in this thread, maybe some other HUKD members as well (too time-consuming to check all posts). The main source of w8-w10 upgrade guidance for me and a few other buddies with same Acer kit has been the Linx tablet forums who were faced with similar upgrade issues and found workarounds months ago, some of which had been lost in the mists of time. Now if you could get Acronis TI working from USB on the Acer that would be cool, in meantime we're limited to Macrium Reflect.

After further testing, miracast and "cast to" is extremely flakey on windows 10 (even after a Wifi driver update.
Going to throw windows 8.1 on it again.

I'm now running Windows 10 and would like to say a big thanks to all who took the time to share their methods. You saved me a lot of time and i'm very grateful.

Regarding misinformation - I tried a lot of restarts, undocking and redocking the tablet, pressing f8 etc to try and get past the personalisation part of the clean Windows 8.1 install but nothing worked for me unfortunately so I spent £6.99 at local PC World on a USB OTG adapter to get over this hurdle. I did state that I thought if you slipstreamed the drivers into your 8.1 fresh install files and / or maybe installed them if the installation let you like you used to be able to do with SATA / RAID drivers then you should be able to not need a OTG adapter.

Sorry to hear others have had duff machines and returned them but with a 100% working machine and Windows 10 I
really rate this for the £99 it will have cost me although I have seen them for £169.99 on ebay (new / refurb) in
case anyone still fancies one for the same price as the effectively unwarranted Chinese ones.

Who really cares if a an otg cable is required or not. People can only speak of their experiences, and there are a few that have worked tirelessly to come up with a solution and without them people may of sent back a perfectly good bit of kit because they weren't able to upgrade. I think spending 99p on a cable before trying this upgrade is money well spent on piece of mind that an upgrade is possible.

You are the FIRST person on this thread that has had any kind of luck in installing drivers from the USB port during the 8.1 upgrade. So I really don't think I was spreading disinformation.

In case you hadn't noticed, we would ALL still be running Windows 8.1 if it wasn't for the efforts of Andy_Sym and myself. So apologies if we made a collective mistake in our troubleshooting process :wink:. But I think you've done pretty well out of us.

& let's be honest - USB OTG cables are useful things to have. So no point crying over 99p's worth of spilt milk :smiley:

I have read your comments, and those comments frequently and sometimes categorically incorrectly insist that an OTG cable is essential to perform an upgrade, which it isn't. Not suggested it was intentional disinformation, just that it is, and the comment was politely prefixed with "please".

If you have managed to get the USB port on your dock working whilst going through this process, then that's all good. It didn't work for me - which is why I went with USB OTG. I guess it didn't work for most other people on here either.

A better approach would have been to say - 'I've just found out that the USB port in the keyboard actually works during the upgrade process....so there's no need to use a USB OTG cable'...

Please stop spreading disinformation. No OTG cable is required. If the attached keyboard dock & associated full-size USB port becomes unresponsive during any part of an installation, simply close the "lid", wait a second, then re-open the lid, whereby the keyboard and full-size USB will become responsive again without any detriment to the installation.

Did you do it via live chat or via the returns process? The returns process is automated and i got my labels right away. Just had to find a ups point.

Yep, MS certainly need to sort out their customer service. But as I say, getting it repaired would have given you a far better outcome. It IS a very good little laptop...and Windows 10 isn't difficult to install (it just required a bit of perseverance in the early stages from andy_sym and myself).

Anyway, you live and learn. I'm still not sure how you'll get a better deal than this one though.

Mine is now back with microsoft. No communication to say they have it, no word of a refund. 6 days i've had a dispute with paypal about them and they have failed to respond to that either.

Add to that they sent out opened stuff, faulty stuff, wrong spec on site, wouldn't/couldnt cancel my order 24 hours before it was sent and their live chat being worse than useless i'm really struggling to think of any other company i've dealt with over the years being more useless and unhelpful than them.

£200 or "maybe" £100 for a faulty product just isn't worth it. If ms opened it to take off the bloatware they could of fixed the win 10 update issue, or at the very least sent out instructions, i believe we were deliberately misled. 32bit not 64bit and emmc not ssd wasn't the major issue especially not for £100, it became an issue when the ms chat guy told me i'm wrong rather than look into it and alter it so customers aren't misled. When one of their selling points is and i quote "Get started with Windows or Office by connecting with one of our experts" and they don't even know the products they are selling, well that says it all. They don't even sell a vast range of machines.

The order / returns process was a bodge from start to finish. Another selling point of theirs is "no hassle returns". It was a hassle finding a ups drop off and taking it there. I rarely get faulty items but the last item was a coolermaster case with parts missing and broken off amazon. They sent a courier to pick it up at their expense and i got an email when they recieved it back, and another email within a couple of hours to say money had been refunded. That is no hassle returns!

I installed 8.1 and everything went fine. I'd just typed in the new pc name when the phone rang. I came back and the machine had turned off. It now won't come back on. Time to send back?

*Ideally, use a plastic pry tool to split the keyboard apart (or even a credit card). A flat head metal screwdriver may scratch/damage the casing.

When trying to open the keyboard, which screws on the bottom do you need to unscrew? All or just the outer 8 ones?

I used a Kingston one and it went in first time, change it to a Samsung one and it took 10 attempts and a wooden stirrer to lodge it in. has any checked the SD card speeds? I got a Kingston UHS I (3) but the slot seems limited to 20MB/s read 17MB/s write. In my Note 4 I get 60 / 53 ....shame but not a deal breaker, hence why I put a class 10 Samsung card

anyone have problem with the microsd card cannot be securely inserted?

Ok so I have easier solution to activate clean install of windows 10 and getting key for it. All you need to do is contact Microsoft online chat and tell them you have updated your pc and you cant activate it. After that they will ask you about windows 8 code which you can get from your bios using for example this simple tool called: produkey and copy it to the gay you gonna talking to. They gonna check it and its going to be valid like mine. After all you will receive brand new KEY for windows 10 which you keep for the future. He might ask you to get a control over your pc but it safe and he will check the error code. Don't forget to install windows 10 home edition as he want activate pro version. I hope it helps if someone is fancy for clean install windows 10 and key for it :wink:

I have not used OTG cable but used the USB connector on the keyboard with a usb hub I had lying about. If it helps these are the steps I did to updaste to windows 10
1. download Windows media creation tool for windows 8.1 form here http://windows.microsoft.com/en-gb/windows-8/create-reset-refresh-media
2. Download Windows 8.1 32 bit (not Windows 8.1 single language- this will not active) and creat a USB
3. Download Windows media creation tool for windows 10 form http://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/software-download/windows10
4. Download Windows 10 32 bit only and creat USB
5. Download All the drivers from Acer for Windows 8 & 10 from here http://www.acer.ae/ac/en/AE/content/drivers
Select model as Notebook > Aspire Switch 11 > SW5 111, download drivers for windiows 8.1 32 bit & windows 10 32 bit
6. Unzip all the files and put them onto Windows 8.1 USB stick you created earlier into a seperate foulder.

Now like i siad I pluged the USB hub into the keyboard and pluged the USB stick and wired mouse into the hub. If you do not have a hub you may need OTG cable.

7. Reboot the system and when laptop restarts keep pressing F12 key to display the boot menu.
8. Select to boot from USB stick.
9. Wait untill it reaches the install screen. If it ask you for the windows key then you have not downloaded the correct version of the Windows 8.1, if it reaches the install screen without asking for Windows key then all is well and it will active windows autmatically upon installing windows 8.1
10. Delete all the partions on the drive and recreate a single partion. Windows will tell you it need to creat more partions to work properly, just let it do that.
11. Select the largist parttion to install windows and let it do its work

Hope fully windows 8.1 will finish installing as it should.

12. Install windows 8.1 platform and Wifi drivers you downloaded from acer, I did not bother to install any other drivers as I did that after Windows 10 upgrade, but you can if you wish.

13 reboot as neccassary to finish windwos drivers installation.

Now you should be able to check if windows 8.1 is activated by going into system.

14. Plug Windows 10 USB stick and Start the windows 10 setup.
15. No need to run windows updates when it ask, you can do that after windows 10 upgrade.
16. Let it finish the installing windows 10

Once it finshed just install the Windows 10 drivers.

I used the Realtek! I can't see why you'd need both, I've used Bluetooth too and no problems, perhaps there is a slight different version that uses the broadcom

loving mine for the money paid. my quidco is still tracking at £1.71..anyone else's? Windows 10 has been great. I installed Plex last night and was getting poor throughput on the wireless, movies were really choppy, my access point never has a problem, so it had to be the tablet. I couldn't find a driver update for the WIFI adapter so I tried using update from Device Manager, which never usually works! It found a newer driver and from then on...no problems streaming.

Nothing UK bought comes close to this. Some of the Chinese tablets seem good on paper...but they have overheating issues, & no warranty recourse.

This Switch also has the Z3745 processor which is significantly better than the usual Z3736F ... and the screen (with Gorilla Glass 3) really is v.good for the money.

Windows 8.1 clean install definitely will allow you to skip putting in the licence key.

funny thing is the keyboard and screen were glitchy at that point but i managed to get the wifi driver installed without the usb otg cable

still would definitely advise others to have a usb otg cable before attempting the upgrade

i managed to upgrade mine without a USB OTG cable however it didnt pick up the licence key

it works for the moment but will try and email microsoft to see if they can send it to me

Keep in mind that most laptop hard drives these days are thin form factor drives. The older style drives are thicker by a few mm.

Can't you just remove some of the foam that you said was there? Alternatively, if you have any other spare hard drives, then you may find one of them is a thin form factor one...

Yeah I was slightly worried about the compression but used an ssd that I had lying around basically because it was thinner than the other two by fractions of a millimetre.

Is no one else having this issue? Strange if it's just my machine.

SSD would be wasted on this laptop. Reason being is that the SATA interface is USB 2.0 - so it's only a bit quicker than the SD card slot.
Better to keep things cheap and stick in a mechanical hard drive. Then just save pictures/videos/music on it...and keep the main eMMC memory for apps/games etc.

One question I have... Up until now I have just removed the previous 8.1 install to get some space back but thinking about a 'clean' refresh / reset of 10.

If this is done, do you then need to reinstall the drivers or do they reinstall automatically? Does this differ depending on what option you choose?

Fresh Win10 install and HDD under the keyboard. The thing zips along nicely. Very pleased indeed.

One thing i noticed was that the back cover had to be squeezed back on once HDD was in place. Was tempted to remove some of the foam so it wasnt as tight! Anyone else have issues with the HDD?

Thanks to the guidance on this thread I now have Windows 10 up and running, with only minor tribulations along the way. Everyone's commentary is much appreciated.

Just a couple of points: I found to get the Switch to boot from USB you need to hold onto the power button (and volume down) until the screen comes on, then release the power. If you 'click' the power button, and the button is not being held as the tablet starts, the tablet doesn't boot from the USB (this happened to me a few times and I wondered what I was doing wrong).

When the tablet reboots after installing 8.1 make sure to run your finger over the touchpad as it's booting, so it knows it's there. Without doing this I found myself getting to the personalise page without any means of continuing - I don't think the keyboard is 'glitchy' as such, I just think there needs to be some input on boot so that it's recognised. (Could be totally wrong, but that's how it worked for me!)

After installing Windows 10 install the 'Platform drivers' for touchscreen and MicroSD recognition. I haven't installed any of the other drivers (except for Wifi connectivity after the 8.1 install) - does anyone know if I need to?

I'd definately not buy on pre-order and you can't trust the specs beforehand. It's like on further investigation the z8300 can only support 2gb yet this says 4gb.

I'm happy to wait for a good deal from a uk supplier or something is sorted with the teclast.

Because i don't trust either microsoft or acer to do anything properly. £100 for something fully working and new then yes that's a bargain. £200 or maybe £100 for something that looks reconditioned and i may not see for weeks and even then not guaranteed to work properly just isn't worth the gamble.

Office 2016 works perfectly by the way - as does a dual screen setup (using a micro HDMI cable). I currently have mine outputting in 1080P to a Dell 22" screen. Doesn't seem to slow it down at all.

I managed to update to windows 8.1 then windows 10 but now the touchscreen doesn't work. Also the side buttons on the tablet only work to power the machine on and once on they don't work either. Any ideas what has gone wrong ? Thanks

I haven't had the £100 yet but 99.9% sure there shouldn't be an issue and family seem to really get on with the Switch 11 compared to the Venue Pro 11 I prefer so I get that back!

I must say, I'm not fussed that some people have had their cashback already. I am absolutely confident that Quidco will pay out - after all, when was the last time a Quidco rep came on to one of these forums to personally state that we would get our cashback?! They have also sent emails to us confirming that we would receive the cashback (assuming we haven't used voucher/discount codes etc).

It is possible to use an SSD - but personally, I think that is a waste of money. The connection to the spare SATA port seems to top out at 40MB/s (roughly a tenth of the theoretical speed of an SSD).

Better to just fit a spare mechanical drive as they are cheap and have lots of capacity (ideal for photo/music/video collections).

You will not be able to upgrade the internal storage (32GB) as it is a fixed eMMC storage drive that is housed in the tablet part of the laptop.

You can install ANY 2.5" laptop hard drive into the keyboard part of the laptop. This is very easy - you just have to buy the £12 cable, unscrew the base of the keyboard, and fit the cable/hard drive in the empty drive bay. This is a really useful thing to have as it means you can stick in a cheap mechanical hard drive - say 500GB - where you can load your photos/music etc. It will show up as a standard drive in Windows (D :smiley:...

It is well worth doing - and also has a secondary benefit of adding some weight to the keyboard (which combats the tendency of the laptop to tip backwards!)

It's a nice little tablet. Not worth £200 - but worth at least £150 IMO. The screen is excellent...and the keyboard isn't bad. Battery life seems pretty good, and the possibility for expanding storage via the spare SATA connector adds quite a bit of value in my eyes.

You've got a good deal - and I really wouldn't worry about the cashback. Quidco can't realistically back out of their obligations now given their public statements on this website (and with the emails that they sent to us!).
As long as you didn't use discount codes etc, the cashback will be paid.

Sounds like a charging cable, OTG are Micro USB Male to USB Female connections.

The Switch 11 doesn't have a lan connection. If you have a USB > lan connector, then it may work.
BUT, you don't need to do that. If your Switch 11 keyboard and touchpad aren't working, restart your computer. They will start working - but they are VERY glitchy....so just keep the mouse/keyboard alive by pressing keys/moving the mouse every once in a while. This will free up the USB OTG port so you can install the wifi driver.
(I personally had the luxury of having a USB hub that allowed me to use a USB keyboard, mouse and a USB stick all at the same time :smiley: . But everyone else seems to get by just fine by restarting the computer whenever the built in keyboard glitches out)

I had the same issue, running this from a different PC. Pick the 64bit version then run it, it will ask if you want to upgrade the PC or create media for another PC. Choose create media for another PC, then you will be able to pick your USB media, language required, version of win10 required and architecture (32bit, 64bit or both) before creating the media :smiley:

You will not need to download winzip...there is a built in unzipper in Windows 8.1. Just unzip the file and run the wifi driver installer. Then connect to your network, make sure 8.1 is activated...
THEN stick in your Windows 10 USB stick whilst you are still in Windows 8.1. Run it whilst still in Windows...it'll then connect to Microsoft servers and tie your computer to a new Windows 10 licence key (this is vital!). Once it has done this, it'll automatically begin installing Windows 10. About 30 minutes later, you'll have Windows 10 installed.

Follow the instructions already provided, and you'll have a fully activated clean install of Windows 10.
Doing a clean install from Windows 8.1 to 10 directly will not give Microsoft a chance to tie your device to a Windows 10 licence key....meaning you'll almost certainly end up with an unlicenced copy of Windows 10.

We didn't go to such hassle for no reason :smiley:

Some suggestion that moving from w8 to w10 without first reinstalling w8 may result in non-activated w10. Won't be able to check my w10 activation status until late morning / early afternoon. Will post back later. Edit: straight w10 upgrade attempt using w10 installer will likely result in w10 not activating. Use the convoluted suggested workaround in this thread if you want to move to an activated w10. There are other quicker methods to achieve same result but from scan-reading a few comments the suggested workaround seems to suit most people.

Win8 to win10 upgrade via clean install about 45/50mins. Edit: but for me resulted in non-activated w10.
Too early to pass comparison comment on in-use performance, but a clean-install win10 Linx10 definitely boots quicker than this clean install win10 Acer Switch.

All the guides you need have been posted from page 25 onwards. Here is my shortened version that I posted a few pages back;
1. Create a Windows 8.1 USB installer - Done and installed
2. Create a Windows 10 USB installer- if that's the media creation file... done!
3. Have a USB OTG + keyboard ready- Check!
4. Do a clean install of 8.1 using USB installer (deleting all previous partitions). You'll need to download the wifi driver & install it via USB OTG once you are in Windows. Windows 8.1 clean install done. RE:installing the wifi driver, do you mean following the link you specified earlier and downloading it from the link? I'm assuming it will unzip okay without winzip or should I download that as well?
5. Once into Windows 8.1, check it is activated (system info), then run the Windows 10 installer from WITHIN Windows. - Now, you've lost me...
6. Once Windows 10 is installed, check it is activated...you can then do a clean reinstall to clear all W8.1 junk.

Miracast works well on this switch 11 but being new windows 10, where the "play to" option (found in the charms bar windows 8.1)?

the keyboard that comes with it has a USB adapter, is this not a USB keyboard.

Also did i read that the touch screen does not work when upgraded to windows 10. Or does the touch screen work?

OK, will check tomorrow morning. Edit: correct, w10 not activated. Contemplated contacting Microsoft to supply a suitable activation key because after all - Microsoft supplied the kit and stated free upgrade to w10 - but then I imagined the hassle factor attempting to get the message across to MS staff and so decided instead to go down the reinstall w8 prior to w10 upgrade route. Think I had the same issue and resolution with w8 - w10 upgrade on a Linx10 windows tablet.

Because your Windows 10 installation almost certainly won't be activated...

(You get your Windows 10 licence by doing an in-situ upgrade from within Windows 8.1. You will not get a Windows 10 licence if you do a clean install...which is what you seem to have done).

Not being antagoniostic, but why are people being told to install win8 prior to win10? Why not go straight to win10 install like I did? Whole job done in under an hour and no need for repeat win8 installs; no need for OTG cables; no need for external keyboards; no need for external mice; no need for post-win10-install win8 cleanup.

1. Insert your Windows 8.1 USB stick
2. Press and hold volume down, and then press and release the power button. You will have the option to boot to Windows, or boot via the USB recovery stick. Choose the recovery stick
3. Once the USB stick is loaded, select custom install, and delete ALL partitions. Then install W8.1.

You will now have a clean W8.1 installation. Carry on with the process as per my instructions from earlier :smiley:

You need to install Windows 8.1 via USB via a clean installation.

(boot the computer with the USB stick inserted. If it..pressing volume down whilst holding the power button will bring up the option

I'm not sure if I'm doing something wrong - I had no option to delete the partitions as has been mentioned - as is the way Microsoft have gone down, I appear to be given no options whatsoever.

EDIT: I think I've found my error: I was running the exe off the USB, when I should have been booting from the USB

@ theaccountant, it doesn't surprise me as ms seemed to have done exactly what they like here. they list on their site incorrect spec. the live chat don't allow you to cancel an order even though the products not sent. they then argue over the spec rather than investigate. then they say "no hassle" returns yet you have to find a ups depot/drop off point.

btw when i got in touch with paypal ms don't actually allow you to dispute anything. it automatically goes to a claim.

I indeed do mean whilst the drive is still switched on.
I had a drive a while back that was intermittently failing, and would stop reading once it had heated up.

In the end opted to buy a new one, and break the old one.
I remember to this day, throwing the drive from a height of about 5 metres onto concrete. And it still worked.
For comparison, it didn't want to mount anymore when dropped from less than a metre whilst spinning.

Impressed is quite an understatement.
If anyone is interested it was a Samsung f4 2tb, they were fantastic drives.

In the end I still had to dismantle it to get the discs out, it was obvious that the drop had only stopped the heads and control board from doing their job... (I was very new to electronics at that point)

Might have to look into the larger ssd's though, I'm afraid I grabbed a few crucial 240gb's when the manufacturer had a refurb sale. £34 for 240gb iirc, madness!!

If I were you, I'd get it repaired via Acer. It is a bargain - even if Acer/MS were silly not to inform us of the Windows 10 upgrade issues!

Failing that....it's the Asus Vivobook S200E that I would recommend (either with the i3 processor, or the 1007u Celeron - both of which are considerably more powerful than the usual processors that are in laptops/tablets in this class).

Tbh i wouldn’t of minded the whole upgrade procedure had MS or Acer of put some documentation in the box to say it needed doing. I can’t believe one or the other or both didn’t know this which is why i felt this has been mis-sold.

I’ve got to send it back, no choice as the touchpad is faulty. The lack of disk space was never a major problem, as stuff can always be stored on the network, usb or micro sd.

No the touchpad doesn't sound normal on yours unfortunately but if you dealt with Acer instead of Microsoft for the repair / issue you could still get the £100 Quidco cashback. I had the T100 before and have a Venue Pro 11 and I really like the Switch 11 with Windows 10 so will be keeping mine

I know you aren't a fan of upgrading to W10....but the touchpad drivers work SO much better when compared to 8.1.

Before you send it back, I would highly recommend just trying the W10 update. The touchpad also works far better on the Switch than it does on the T100 (which is famed for having a dodgy touchpad!).

Also, the potential for adding a cheap HDD to the keyboard base will overcome then key limitation of the T100; disk space!

If you don't want to perservere with the Switch, then try hunting down a Core i3 powered Asus Vivobook. It has great build quality & a conventional hard drive - which makes it well suited to an SSD upgrade. I have just upgraded one for a client (to the 480GB OCZ Arc SSD) - and it flies! Brilliant bit of kit. Though the Switch actually has a nicer/brighter/whiter screen!

Won't be my money as i need 1 for my sister. But i agree with what you say. She needs something to replace an old laptop that's on it's way out. She doesn't want to spend much as she hates technology (which i find illogical as she uses the laptop every day so she get's her moneys worth from it).

This acer would of been perfect for her had there not of been a big issue with the touchpad on this one and tbh if i knew it was guaranteed for £100 and the recovery partition had of worked after the failed w10 she would of had it and kept it on 8.1 but the touchpad rattles when using the keyboard and feels like a plastic lid that lifts off and the whole left and right click you have to press so far down on it that it just can't be normal.

I did like the screen though, looked nice and clear. I thought it not being full hd would make it poor quality but it is very clear and bright.

You can do it with just the 1 USB. Having two means you can have the W8.1 and W10 installers loaded on two separate sticks...which helps speed up the process.

Because the usb otg cable goes into the tablet rather than the keyboard.

I think 4GB will do the job. 8GB is definitely more than enough.

The Z3745 in this Switch 11 is significantly better than the (anaemic) Z3735F on that version of the Asus T100.

If you want a T100, just buy it from Gumtree (I got one for £95 a few weeks back .... and that one came with the Z3740 processor which is a fairly big step up over the Z3735F).

FYI, the Switch 11 screen is significantly better than the T100 though. Brighter, clearer and protected by a Gorilla (glass 3). The keyboard isn't as good...and it is 500 grams heavier. I am keeping my T100 as it suits me better (lightweight for cycle touring). But if I didn't use it for such things, I would keep the Switch 11 instead.

The T100 upgrades seamlessly to W10.

Exactly what I thought, problem is i'd like ssd to keep up the impact resistance from being thrown around in a messenger bag, but they weigh nothing...
Hence my post a while back about putting in a battery. (But i'm guessing no one was interested in that hair-brain idea)

Also it's a little top heavy in the keyboard dock, some extra weight to balance it is no bad thing IMHO.

All the guides you need have been posted from page 25 onwards. Here is my shortened version that I posted a few pages back;

1. Create a Windows 8.1 USB installer
2. Create a Windows 10 USB installer
3. Have a USB OTG + keyboard ready
4. Do a clean install of 8.1 using USB installer (deleting all previous partitions). You'll need to download the wifi driver & install it via USB OTG once you are in Windows.
5. Once into Windows 8.1, check it is activated (system info), then run the Windows 10 installer from WITHIN Windows.
6. Once Windows 10 is installed, check it is activated...you can then do a clean reinstall to clear all W8.1 junk.
7. Install drivers & away you go :smiley:

OneDrive will work without any tweaking necessary on the standard HDD (good for me as I have Office 365 - so unlimited cloud storage). A micro SD card on the other hand will require the creation of symbolic links etc...which is a faff and isn't that reliable. Also, micro SD cards are comparatively expensive....and they don't come close to covering the amount of files I have stored on OneDrive.

You can also get 500GB drives for v.v.little - which means you can potentially have all your files on the one computer.

If you are happy carrying a separate drive/caddy, then that'll likely be the cheaper option for you. But I personally just like having everything built into one laptop.

I'll need that more detailed guide too as I've never boot and install any windows from USB ever! OTG cable ordered and will borrow a usb keyboard from work

Get yourself a 99p USB OTG cable from Ebay, and once you have it in hand, I'll help you through the process. As you can see from others, it really is easy to do...and in my opinion, well worth the effort. It's a nice little tablet - and has been v.stable/glitch free since I installed W10 on mine. Also, it's a one time hassle...so once it's done, you won't have to go through the faff ever again :smiley:

couple of questions:

- Once the hard drive keyboard mod is done, do we have to safely remove the drive in Windows before detaching the keyboard or can it just be pulled off?

- now that Windows 10 is installed and activated, is the Windows 10 key stored in the bios allowing a fresh Windows 10 install anytime we wish?

- once we remove the Windows old folder and optimize the drive, is there any benefits of a fresh Windows 10 install?

I had to look up what USB OTG cable meant. No I don't but I do have a 8 GB memory stick and a wireless keyboard.

I only used a otg cable the keyboard and trackpad worked fine. it didn't at start but after holding down the power button and restarting it worked fine. I only used one pen drive and otg cable that's it

I had an issue with screen..After using couple of hours, when I hold the tablet. screen flickers...called ms for replacement. but they can only do return and order again with a price tag of 199...but I will miss the quidco...Therefore, I phoned the Acer, they are gonna take it today for repair or replacement. I am not sure if they repair it, I should keep it..I want a replacement...Meantime I am preparing my usb's and otg cable for win 10 when it comes back:)

It's a fairly straight forward process and if you're happy with the product and think you'll get your cashback you should try it. For £100 IF everything works and IF you get your cashback then it's a bargain. Even if you attempt it and fail you should be able to get your money back as i would say you can argue it's not windows 10 compatible if it doesn't update directly.

I was trying to offer a solution for those people that don't want to do a clean reinstallation (or can't, because of not having a USB OTG cable).

The keyboard only stops working when you do that clean reinstallation. So if you are instead just booting into Macrium to clone the recovery/EFI partition structure from a working hard drive to the Switch, then the keyboard would still work...

In all honesty though, I doubt that kind of process would work. Better just to pay the 99p for the USB OTG cable :smiley:

I remember a few years back wasting a good day trying to remove viruses from a Windows XP machine. Why? Because I was too worried about trying to reinstall the machine.

As it happened, the viruses were so deeply embedded that I had to reinstall XP (I also had to reinstall the bios as it too was infected!).

Experiences like that gave me the assurance that literally any Windows computer can be reinstalled...and the reinstallation process is becoming ever easier. More to the point, ANY issue that crops up along the way can always be resolved via a simple Google/Bing keyword search.

Understanding computers is just trial and error. This Switch 11 is a perfect opportunity to learn a few things.

How would you boot into the macrium environment without the OTG? From what I found, the onboard micro sd slot doesn't allow booting, and I don't recall having success with the keyboards' usb slot either... :neutral_face:

And the expectation that "eligible" means "will do it for you" is a subjective assumption as well.
But can't really argue as to whether or not you feel that being computer savvy is "lucky" so much as "practice"....

There is no risk...

The Windows 8.1 licence key is embedded in the bios. So if you fail to upgrade to Windows 10 correctly, you will always have the option to go back to Windows 8.1.

& if you follow the instructions provided (and have a USB OTG keyboard to hand) then it is a 20 minutes hands on process, and a 2 hour overall process.

You cannot break a Windows computer by doing such upgrades. & if you need help along the way, just ask.

Obviously it is far from ideal - and laughable that Microsoft are selling products that can't be updated to W10 automatically. But we have done the hard work...now you can reap the rewards :smiley:.

Sorry to chime in. Read all the excellent work done by those getting this to upgrade, but just wondering - is there definitely no way to correct the partition issue without a fresh install - I have no USB OTG cable and ordering one, waiting for delivery, etc is a bit of a nuisance.

The question of whether it is difficult to upgrade is subjective. I personally find the process completely beyond me. When you buy a new machine which is eligible for Windows 10 upgrade you expect it to do the upgrade without having to jump through hoops to achieve this. Not everyone who buys computers are as savvy as you lucky people. My personal feeling is that it is not worth the risk attempting the upgrade.

Lol @ not time consuming. The 4 year old laptop this was replacing all you had to do was click on windows update and it installed first time and everything was automatic. That's on technology thats 4 years old and on this newish technology that microsoft are selling you have to jump through hoops like this.

It's an absolute joke to have install windows 8.1 again, then install windows 10, and then reinstall it. What makes it worse is this laptop comes from ms. They must of known of this issue and that's why it was on offer.

Not good for people who don't know much about computers or don't have a usb otg lead, usb keyboard and 2 spare usb sticks.

In all fairness it's pretty automated but it does take a fair bit of time if your inpatient. As it is automated I just put on a brew and chill while it does its thing. At least I watched a few videos on Windows 10 and on how intrusive it is making me think twice to install it :stuck_out_tongue:

Okay I seemed to know what I did wrong now thanks. Will reinstall win 8 and then win 10 again do I just click the set up from the flash drive in windows 8 and then that's it? After that i do a new Instalation of win 10 to get rid of any old windows 8 the method I used boot from usb and is install windows 10 with the method I said ? After windows 10 is activated

Yes I couldn't download the 32 bit on my laptop so I did it on the acer switch so I remember I did the 32 bit one after I put it on the flash drive I booted windows from the usb and windows 10 installation began and asked for a cdkey I ignored it and went along with the Instalation. When it asked to install you get 2 option upgrade and custom I went to custom and selected my windows 8 partition and Instalation went through

You need to run the Windows 10 install from WITHIN Windows 8.1.
You cannot successfully upgrade to Windows 10 via the method you used.

Did you definitely download Windows 10 32 bit version? Not sure what else I can think of that might cause the issue as if you are updating an activated Windows 8.1 Home 32 bit with Windows 10 32 bit the key shoudn't be asked for.

thanks my windows 8 was activated I then used the tool to create the windows 10 image on usb. then I restarted windows and let windows 10 load from usb then installed windows 10 when I clicked custom install and installed ? like I installed windows 8 ? I have done something wrong?

@ssjinzo you need to make sure you activate whatever Windows 8.1 version you have with Microsoft either using the online or telephone methods. The original product key that comes with this laptop should be in the UEFI bios so when you put the clean Windows 8.1 it should reactivate fine. Once you are on a active Windows 8.1 then I installed Windows 10 using the set up files I downloaded using the media creation tool (put the files on a MicroSD or USB stick) and then did the upgrade which takes the Windows 8.1 key and doesn't ask for any new Windows 10 product key.

You need to go back into Windows 8.1, make sure it is activated, then run the Windows 10 upgrade tool. You cannot do a clean install UNTIL you have done an in-situ upgrade from 8.1 > 10

installed windows 8 fine now installing w10. it asked for a cd key i just skuped and went to upgrade and it wouldn't let me do it i had to go to custom and select [partition to install? is that the correct way of doing it? saying it will have th old version of windows in .old folder?

if you go through the previous comments you will find your answer. ther are few issue with simple update from taskbar option.

I think you'll find the issue is with the version of windows 8.1 you're upgrading from so there is no easy work around.

I notice that at the moment I have 14.5 gb free on the main partition and another 6.50 gb on the recovery one. If I delete it then I would get 21 gb... would it be enough space to install w10 straight away?

See my post a few pages back pakexport which explains you either need a usb OTG adapter for a external keyboard and mouse or to have installed the Intel driver from Acer as that is responsible for touch screen

My opinions are based on so many negative experiences with this purchase. Quidco, ms, the actual tablet build quality. It's been nothing but problems and even the simpliest thing where ms says "no hassle returns", you still have to mess around finding a ups place to take the return to. If it was no hassle, they would come and pick it up surely.

I've actually changed my mind... Going to keep this and use for Kodi and commute. I'm so indecisive about cheap tech. Should probably just start buying expensive stuff and not buying loads of partial solutions.

If I hadn't wasted time waiting for Windows 8.1 files to install, I would have had the solution in under 2 hours...
& for all those that are following the lead of andy_sym and myself, the process takes about 20 minutes of hands on time, and however much time required to download Windows 8.1 and Windows 10 direct from MS.

There are no 'warranty void' stickers on the keyboard...so the warranty will not be void if we fit a hard drive. Also, if it has to go for repair, I'll just remove the hard drive.

People pay £60 for each incremental step up in iPhone storage capacity...whereas this £12 cable gives me the potential to use some redundant hard drives....and thus give me an extra 640GB of storage.

The deal is what you make of it. You seem to be looking for hurdles - when the reality is that there aren't really any hurdles any more. £99 for a Windows 10 tablet with a v.nice screen, a usable keyboard/touchpad and a proper UK warranty. Pretty good IMO!

1: Yes it took a day for someone to finish getting a workaround, but that saves everyone else having to look and thus saves them the time, after that it is convoluted, but not essentially difficult...
(most of the time finding the workaround was probably spent waiting for the windows 10 installer to actually do anything, I must've run it about 6 times myself...)

2: I admit the cashback argument, Microsoft may back out 3 weeks later and we'll be angry but, without a product fault, unable to return the device.

3: I debate modifying the hdd into the keyboard, since there is no warranty void sticker in the way I would argue that they will uphold the warranty since they have allowed access to make such a modification...

Personally at £99 this is a fair price, at £199 I probably wouldn't have bothered...
And as for you comment on how much heat for the £12 cable, the saying "the cost of everything and the value of nothing" comes to mind. It would go cold because £12 looks like the standard pricing, but for those of us who need/want the expansion, that isn't a bad price.

It is difficult. If it was easy then it would of automatically installed and it wouldn't of taken a day for someone to find a workaround that isn't the most straight forward thing to do. I spent 12 hours trying to get windows 10 on it. I could build 12 computers in that time! Add to that the touchpad rattling everytime i press it. In fact it's not even a touchpad, when you do a left click with it to actually make contact with anything the touchpad moves about 1cm below the rest of the case. The best way i can explain the touchpad is it's like a lose battery compartment on the back of a tv remote.

As for being confident about the cashback you can be as confident as you like but it makes no difference to the outcome. Take away opinions and at the moment the acer has cost everyone £200, and that's a fact.

£12 for a cable, you should post that on here, see how much heat you get for it.

As for warranty etc with a chinese tablet that's a fair point. However if you open your acer and put a hard drive in, then you have voided your warranty.

I did and it's back in the box. Too many drawbacks with this. It's probably a very decent small laptop once you've got Windows 10 installed and fitted another hard drive but it's too big and heavy to be a useful tablet. I'll stick with owning both a more powerful full size laptop and a Windows tablet for the commute etc.

To me it's not worth £100. My touchpad rattles and feels like it could snap off. The windows 10 update is nothing but hassle.

I also think the tablet is too heavy and makes the whole thing top heavy when it's docked.

The excitement about adding an extra drive to it, i don't understand that. You might just as well buy a better product in the first place if you want to add extra storage. The lead costing £15 is a joke. It's also not £100 if you then upgrade it, so why bother with all the hassle when you can pick up something better like the asus transformer for £200

For someone who doesn't have the touchpad issue, is happy with windows 8.1 and feels confident of cashback then it might be worth £100.

The X98 has an inferior processor - and costs a tenner more. You also don't have the luxury of being able to expand the storage via the spare SATA space in the keyboard...

If that X98 had an Atom X5, then it would be an excellent deal. But £110 for a Chinese tablet, with no real warranty & a poor processor....that doesn't seem like good value to me.

I almost ordered one but apparently it has a pretty serious throttling/overheating issue. I therefore paid £110ish for X98 Air 3G with keyboard case. Spec isn't as good but not seeing anything about heat problems.

I received mine last Friday and have been chasing this trhead... seems to be a lot of issues to update to w10.

Its good to know that you can add an ssd disk but this would be for storage only as the OS must stay on the 32gb integrated disk... so why would u go to a ssd disk then? better to get one of those £28 128GB micro sd card... ( get that price with bespoke and then another 18% cashback on top...) so u can use it as tablet without missing all the storage?

Also, I just opened and im not happy with the feeling of it... keyboard looks quite cheap, and the tablet is quite big!!

Assuming we get the £100 cashback... do u think this worth £100 + all the effort to get it updated to w10?

You can fit a standard 2.5 hard drive, yes, as long as its SATA it'll fit and it works fine (I'm using a 400Gb one now). The 2.5 (non SSD) disks are fatter but I can't see any bulge in the keyboard base.

unfortunately I already swapped the ssd for a bigger (slower) 5400rpm hard disk, but I think you're right.
The c: is giving me up to 141MB/s read and 80MB/s write
The d: is giving me up to 34MB/s read and 34MB/s write

My question is, does the connector pins from the keyboard to the screen have dedicated power lines.

ie. if you were to regulate the current of another battery that was modified into the keyboard, would it actually have a way of feeding the tablet. Adding an ssd and some extra battery life would make this tablet very formidable.

Also, the tablet isn't freezing in win8.1, and the keyboard and trackpad do work without any updates. They just get randomly disconnected if you're not using them for a while.
I managed to get everything done to install win 10 with only the wifi driver, i just kept moving the cursor until it was at the stage where the computer didn't need input anymore.....

how does lack of tablet mode effect the experience on Windows 10? And also does undocking the tablet with ssd installed damage the hard drive? Would it be like unmounting a storage device without clicking "safely remove"?

Been away for the weekend just came back II haven't had a chance to to open and look at the device. Reading this thread regarding win 10 install could you not delete the recovery partition and then merge it with main windows partition adding 6gb then install Windows 10 is that not a option?

One problem....when I go to power>shutdown, the computer doesn't seem to do a proper shutdown. It just goes straight to a black screen - and then requires a long press of the power button to shut it down completely.

Anyone else experiencing that issue?

Amazing work from people here to get this working but I'm going to return it and get a Teclast.

Just depends where you are, for example if you are in flats or an area with loads of different wifi networks there are only so many channels in the 2.4ghz band and the connections will interfer with eachother. I had this issue at a event i was at recently, 5ghz was perfect but 2.4 was not usable or was intermittant.

Its ok for me if im at home but i just dont understand why Acer chose not to put a dual band chip, unless they had loads left over from old stock.

Also 5ghz gives you faster speeds than 2.4 an the channel width is wider.

Did you definitely get Windows 8.1 home version? There is free software that can read the Windows key from the uefi bios if you Google it but as I say I didn't need this and just activated via the Windows settings and verifying online

Well, after the seeming disaster of this deal....I am actually very impressed with this tablet. Yes, it's a bit heavy, and the speakers aren't brilliant - but the screen is great for what it is (bright and clear). Touchscreen is sensitive, keyboard is pretty good, and the touchpad is much improved in Windows 10 (for whatever reason).

Battery life seems pretty good too...and I like the way the screen can be turned around for watching videos etc.

Windows 10 is also feeling v.v.quick on here.

It would have been a fair purchase at £199. At £99, it's a bargain (IMO)

If you read my step by step institutions a page or so back (here) I just had to activate the fresh Windows 8.1 online once I had WiFi working and it picked the key up that's stored in the uefi bios

I have reinstalled windows 8.1 by getting the l key off before. I got round the keyboard problem by pressing f8 constantly and I could then input a pc name and finish installing. I now need the drivers to get the rest working

Who puts 2.4ghz only wifi in a 2014 device.

Have to say that I'm happy with the tablet now it's on Windows 10 and going to keep it. Just hope Quidco works out otherwise all this effort will feel even more ridiculous

I did system clean up but for some reason the Driver Store folder in windows.old is still there. Looking to see if I can free up more space as 21.1GB free of 28.1GB can still be tweaked :stuck_out_tongue:
EDIT: Seems that even using compact /compactos:always via Command prompt as admin didn't free much more up so 21GB looks to be as much space as I can get to work with.

doh beaten to it. Got 10 running to lol, bit of a fanny around but it's working and activated. doesn't seem to switch to tablet mode when removed from dock but I can live with that

Run 'system cleanup' as an administrator...you'll then be able to remove Windows.old.

Or just do a clean install...

My camera seems to work ok with the Windows camera app.

Once all of those Acer drivers are installed, the keyboard/touchpad start working - as does the touchscreen and the audio system.
I am just installing the last few updates. Once that is done, I should be able to get the Windows 10 dialogue to pop up - and will then be able to install W10 via USB.

Ok how to get Windows 10 installed which worked for me - note this my invalidate some part of your warranty or leave your machine not working 100% or similar!

*Download the Windows 8.1 media creation tool from Microsoft here and select Windows 8.1 Home and place this on a USB drive

*Boot from your USB drive and before installing anything click on advanced and delete all partitions as you don't need any of these afterwards. Select the new single drive and install Windows 8.1 on this which was now about 28GB I think.

*At this point you will probably need to use a micro USB to OTG adapter and a USB hub like I did as the touchscreen and keyboard dock don't work. You might be able to add the drivers for these to your Windows 8.1 set up above or slipstream them etc but I didn't do this hence the need for the OTG adapter.

*Once Windows 8.1 has booted add the Windows 8.1 drivers from Acer's web site and once you have WiFi working activate Windows 8 using the online activation system and turn off. NOTE: I didn't bother updating ANY Windows 8.1 drivers or adding security updates etc as Windows 10 will have it's own updates and this just wastes time.

*At this stage you should be able to use the Windows 10 media creation tool here to place the set up files on another USB drive or your MicroSD drive etc and begin Windows 10 installation which went fine for me.

*I then ran Disk Clean up on C Drive and removed whatever I could leaving me with 21.2GB free. Now trying to manually remove windows.old

I win. All running with Windows 10 - finally!

That's a standard Windows 8.1 installation size. Nothing to be concerned about...

Remember, the newer (8.1 onwards) tablets all come with wimboot compressed Windows installations. The installation we have just installed is a full Windows 8.1 installation - and unlike Windows 10, hasn't been automatically compressed by the installer.

Progress for me - the OTG adapter has got me into my Windows 8.1 fresh install but I too only have 20Gb free. Shame my local Poundworld don't do them though! Going straight for Windows 10 install after I did online activation on the fresh 8.1 install using Windows 10 set up files stored on MicroSD. Hope one of us manages it!

I have no idea I was trying to get into safemode but some how I had activated the keyboard so I could complete the install. I need to try the drivers later buy even after all that the hard drive space is still only 20 odd gig of free space. That's with deleting the partitions

I can get into bios by pressing F2 on keyboard then pressing F8 I can actually sometimes get to Advanced Options within the Windows 8.1 set up that's nearly done but then command prompt options asks me to enter a password for Administrator and the keyboard stops working. Grrrrr

Off to get USD OTG adapter from local PC World @ £6.99 as I want this sorted today

I will grab a copy of all the drivers from there but not sure what use they are unless I can get them onto the MicroSD and install them via F8 or similar before the new Windows 8.1 starts up

Yep, in Windows 8.1
Just installed the wireless driver from that 'driverfree.org' website (actual download files come direct from Acer).
Just running Windows Update as we speak. The rest of the tablet is working well enough to at least get me to the point where I can then do a Windows 10 upgrade

One thing to note - when I wiped all of the partitions, one of the partitions was different to any I have seen before when doing W8.1 clean installs. It was a 64MB 'ESM' partition ... whereas normally it is a 100MB partition at the start of the drive.
Acer may have installed some borked partition system....which is perhaps why Windows 10 couldn't install.

I am quietly confident that this clean installation process will give me a perfect working order Windows 10.

If it works, then I will be v.happy with the tablet.

Cheers but I live in Newcastle :-) I can get a USB OTG adapter if you succeed however I'm not holding out much hope as unless that single Intel driver on the Acer site for these has the touchscreen and keyboard dock driver I can't see how we will get them working again!?

Good luck as depending on how you do will determine if I go through with the Returns process which I have started and involves dropping off at a UPS place, hopefully one of their local ones at a shop will do!

Thanks for letting me know USB OTG doesn't work - saves me a trip to local shops! Think I've run out of options as can't do anything with fresh Windows 8.1 install as the dock keyboard doesn't work or the touchscreen, couldn't do anything with the built in Acer recovery as that was corrupt and couldn't update to Windows 10. RMA time it seems!?

Right. I've accepted that Windows 10 isn't going to happen here. Now the question is whether I keep a Windows 8.1 machine that I paid £99 for. Leaning towards a 'no' and purchasing a Teclast dual boot tablet instead.

Interesting to see if you can use the USB OTG adapter to get installed. Also with a fresh Windows 10 install rather than putting Windows 8.1 on first won't you not be licensed as you haven't upgraded?

From reading around forums on the Aspire Switch 10 it seems others have indeed used a OTG USB adapter directly in the tablet to get past this issue. I don't have one so debating whether to even bother trying to get one...

Hahaha - with a clean Windows 8.1 install both the touchscreen and keyboard on the dock don't work so I can't get past the PC name screen. If the tablet had a full size USB then I guess I could plug a USB keyboard in but as it doesn't I think I'm now snookered lol

If you expect the people at the end of a customer service line for a huge company like Microsoft to know the exact specifications of each device they sell....well, you must be wet behind the ears!

You bought these tablets knowing that they had eMMC chips (I and others already told you). You bought it knowing you could use the SSD thing as a loophole to then be able to return....not that you needed such a thing as Microsoft offer a hassle free full refund.

The Switch 11 is known to have a very average touchpad. It is a cheap tablet made to a budget. So no surprises there.

The seal being broken is likely just a quirk of the Signature Edition process. How else do they get rid of the manufacturer bloat that is normally installed?

You should choose your battles better. This one is just going to waste everyone's time. Paypal will of course rule in your favour, but you'll still have to return the computer in exactly the same way as if you had just taken a few minutes on live chat to request an RMA slip.

Creating a Paypal dispute is a waste of time. But whatever floats your boat.

I agree with others - you only have to involve PayPal if Microsoft don't offer you a refund surely!?

As for mine, I'm wiping all partitions inc the recovery partition and C then installing fresh Windows 8.1 as I can't fix the corrupt factory partition anyway. If this doesn't then let me update to Windows 10 then mine will be going back as I have done far more than can be expected reasonable to upgrade mine to Windows 10 which Microsoft clearly state it should!

MS have done everything WRONG here. You may have confidence in a full refund, i dont.

I've been mis-sold goods that were not the spec they were listed as. Goods that are not fit for purpose. Goods where the seal has been broken. Goods where the touchpad doesn't work properly.

I dont care if the seller is microsoft or an individual on ebay, this is bang out of order. I'm not prepared to sit and wait weeks for them to get the product back and then they go pull another stunt and come up with some excuse not to refund fully.

If it was simply a mistake i wouldn't of put in a dispute. But this looks like trotters independent traders.

Mines boxed up. I've complained to paypal as well and started a dispute. It's not just one issue here, there are many and i don't like being taken for a mug.

I can't seem to change anything in the bios really, certainly not the secure boot stuff. Trying a Reset your PC from the Windows 8.1 USB stick I booted now...

EDIT: HA - This option is not supported when the PC is started using a recovery drive or Windows installation media.

I don't think it's a driver issue. The problem comes in the upgrading part of windows and around 35% of "copying files". It doesn't even get to the configuring / driver part of the installation.

Not Windows 10 compatable

I bought it 3 weeks ago and have pent most days of all of the 3 weeks full time trying to Upgrade to Windows 10. Finally gave it up and returned to Microsoft Store, as Microsoft technical help agreed that it can not be upgraded. This is the approach I will be taking. I've reinstalled Windows 8.1 many times via the generic ISO file on the MS website....and it doesn't cause driver issues. Sometimes Windows Update doesn't find a driver - but it has never caused a system not to boot.

If this doesn't work, then I can only assume this is a BIOS issue.

On a side note, I'm amazed that no other Switch 11 owners have reported this problem elsewhere. Perhaps there is something about these signature tablets that is actually causing the problem...

I can totally understand and think it's a joke that even the recovery partition is corrupt either before of after trying a Windows 10 upgrade on a Signature Edition device like these but I'm going to try repairing things using a download of Windows 8.1 home from http://windows.microsoft.com/en-gb/windows-8/create-reset-refresh-media Then when I have it booted and activated go for the Windows 10 upgrade. Will report back how that goes but if that doesn't work then the only other thing I can think of is wiping both the recovery partition and c drive using the fresh Windows 8.1 install but that might then cause driver issues etc.

They've tried to pull a fast one here to get rid of loads of old stock. I hope the customer service time wasted and postage costs them a fortune.

Btw guys if anyone has any trouble getting their money back make sure you tell them they are mis-selling their product. I have it in writing from both the site and chat that they think this is 64bit and has a 32gb ssd.

It's 32 bit, and doesn't have a ssd. It uses cheaper emmc. Add to that the windows 10 issue, my dodgy trackpad, the seal being broken...... if i dont get a full refund i'm going to go ballistic.

Tried a few more things but I think the only way to fix these is to use an external boot device of some kind with Windows 8 media on to get a clean install of Windows 8 working first then do the update. This might also mean that we don't have to mess around with other drives etc during the Windows 10 update.

As for Microsoft sorting us out - I haven't even tried contacting their support as they are usually useless and it seems others who have tried have confirmed their support hasn't improved and they know NOTHING about one of their so called Signature products!

Pretty sure MS will just pay out refunds and move on.

Looks like we've all got lemons here. New Consumer Rights Act gives us 30 days for refunds, not the MS 14, because they're not as described and therefore faulty.

Yep Andy, the failed update has destroyed it. You should also be able to restore via ALT-F10 on booting, but you'll get the blue screen saying Ha ha unlucky you've bought a steaming hot turd and you're screwed.

This is the first Windows 8 computer that apparently I cant even use the Update and Recovery > Recovery > Remove everything and reinstall Windows option as even that says there is an error! This thing is unbelievable.

EDIT: Interesting this time using the above with the tablet only I got:

I can't factory reset so not even an option for me.

When i put windows 10 on my home built desktop and never encountered a single issue i thought it was the best thing ever.

Now this whole MS experience has put me off buying anything from them. The "help" they gave me was non existant and they don't listen or believe anything you say and are rude and condescending.

I've only used MicroSD slot route so far and has issues so not sure that will help you either @m1keyp1key but good luck! I think the factory reset option then trying on first boot might be a good bet too but I might have lost the last of limited enthusiasm for this thing in the next hour or so

I hate being beaten by technology. I'm having one last go. I've got the latest bios, i've got all the latest drivers installed. MS notification says it's compatible.

Just as something different i decided to turn off windows defender and use my usb stick to install but when prompted for more storage also decided to go the memory slot way just in case there was some kind of conflict using the usb for both.

I've now covered just about everything i can think of.

Nearly finished on the blue screen of installing windows, next to the black screen where no doubt it will fail again.

The ESD folder it set up files yes. Like a true geek I'm determined to get this to Windows 10 so am now using the MS download tool to put the set up files on my MicroSD card this time and also trying a sfc /scannow from command prompt to check the drives and have copies of the latest BIOS and Chipset Driver from Acer site saved too. If this doesn't work then I think I might actually factory reset the laptop using the recovery partition before trying an upgrade on first full boot. A little worrying I only found one person on Amazon I think it was that has successfully upgraded their Switch 11 to Windows 10!

Is it restore files for Windows 8.1 or the failed Windows 10?

It's been ages since I had to deal with Microsoft. I contacted them about this and I've been absolutely staggered by Microsoft's rudeness, arrogance, and incompetence.

The guy I dealt with had no idea about his company's products, yet was still arrogant to use sarcasm when he couldn't understand me, and then ended the chat. Complained to his manager and heard nothing further.

It seems they've learnt nothing in the last 10 years.

£99 for WIndows 10 and this appalling customer service could be forgiven. £200 for Windows 8.1 and hours spent trying to upgrade following their awful instructions and this is looking like a dog.

Well if the upgrade has messed with the recovery partition then maybe it's trying to install to that or something weird?

I'm going to try a log file analysis later as Windows 10 setup creates log files located in the hidden folders:

You should be able to reset your Acer unless the 6gb recovery partition and / or the USB stick or MicroSD are somehow wiped surely?

Today i've got the "get windows 10" icon in my system tray. If you then check your pc it says EVERYTHING is compatible.

+ 1 piece of important info saying you wont be able to reset your pc to factory settings after the upgrade.

Don't wipe any drives to do a fresh Windows 10 install as you need to perform an upgrade from Windows 8 to get your free Windows 10 license. If you manage the upgrade and activate Windows 10 then you should be ok to then go back and wipe whatever you want like that 6gb recovery partition as Microsoft have your Switch license on their servers.

I spoke to a member of the Microsoft tech team and he confirmed that in order to install Windows 10 you will require 20GB free hard disk space. Without the 20GB free hard disk space the installation of the upgrade will fail.
He did however say that it is possible to upgrade using a USB hard drive however in order for this to be successful you will need to purchase a Windows key!!
So it looks like we're stuck with Windows 8.1 unless we pay for a Windows 10 license!

If anyone finds a fix to upgrading to Windows 10 please share.

Still undecided on whether I should return the laptop to Microsoft as it's a good machine for £99, if Quidco pay out on the cashback!!

LOL powlest. That's some moron reading from a checklist that knows naff all about computers. Especially the bit about floppy disks, wtf is their checklist from the 1980s?

If they knew anything about the laptop then they would know it doesnt even have an optical drive.

I had some muppet keep telling me it's 64 bit because their website says so. I gave them the acer product code and link to the acer spec and he still argued it's 64 bit.

This machine is nothing but a time toilet.

Because they are giving us £100 back (plus Quidco's cut) on a £200 device!! Simple business logic says that such price cuts are unsustainable.

Tried all day to update. Didn't work, even with 32gb sd. Not sure whether to keep or return as windows seems quite difficult to use in comparison to iPads,iPhones and old dell PC. Seems like too much work and no play even for £99 as the overwhelming frustration would lead me to throw it in the bottom of the wardrobe and stick to what I know and find easy to use.

Same story here, signature sticker over the broken silver seal, also a few minor scuff marks around the power socket and a slight rip in the box. Everything else looks as new, so to be honest not that worried about it.

The windows 10 upgrade failed twice for me, before and after a bios update, I've done nothing else with the machine other than try to upgrade it and frankly it's a real disappointment, as otherwise seems an OK little machine for a ton, with similar build quality to my Acer Chromebook.

Tried chatting to Microsoft help and they are of no use at all as expected...

Mine is 2014, and - although I'm not sure this is indicative of anything - the updates history shows three separate previous periods in which it was updated, from 2014 onwards.

In response to Maani12, if it runs as well as you'd like then I don't think there's any need to upgrade. I'd be happy with mine except I'd like Windows 10 and the problems I've already faced (and the fact it's telling me I need to repair my computer) don't bode well should anything go wrong in the future.

I've installed every windows 8 update and upgraded the BIOS to 1.03 which is the latest according to my SN. Now trying W10 again. I'll let you know what happens.

The machine doesn't seem so bad. What is ridiculous is a Signature device direct from the Microsoft Store that won't upgrade to Windows 10.

I've been trying to install Windows 10 all afternoon with no success. After initially trying the download-to-computer and use USB for extra space method (which didn't work), I downloaded Windows 10 onto a USB and tried to install it from there. That didn't work either. Tried factory resetting and now I'm getting 'Your PC needs to be repaired' and an 0xc000000f error code (which might be a hardware error). I hope someone out there has had some luck!

I've just vented with a microsoft agent. This whole thing is a nightmare. I suggest to anyone who hasn't taken delivery of theirs to refuse it, and anyone who has to return it.

It's utter garbage, and i wouldn't pay £50 for it. I only opened it as my sisters laptop is playing up as i wanted to refuse it.

My cashback didnt even track / register. I have made a claim. Hope that doesnt affect anything....

Not upgrading to Windows 10 is a ridiculous issue for a Signature computer purchased from direct from the Microsoft Store.

I'm giving it one last go and then unless I wake up feeling different tomorrow I think it will be going back

All the way through the blue screen of installing windows 10. Then it reboots to a black screen where it says copying files and i get to around 34%. The circular pencentage says less than that.

I'm doing it with the files downloaded via the tool on the ms site and directly onto usb rather than the windows update way.

It's almost certainly a driver issue. The storage issue should be a non issue because i don't even get far enough into the installation for enough files to be copied to create a problem if there was some little quirk with storage locations.

Had a quick read around the Windows 10 install issue and trying it in tablet only mode in case it's a driver compatibility issue like some others have said. I find it incredible that this so called "Signature Edition" has failed to update itself to Windows 10 twice already and Acer Care Center is installed and configured to auto start....

Got me thinking that these are customer returns though Andy. Broken seals, mine was charged fully, someone elses 8%. Different free storage. You'd of thought these would all be similar from the same batch.

Also my trackpad is strange, The part nearest the outer edge of the case is not flush and when you press down on it there is alot of give before it actually "clicks" and if you press lightly in the centre of the the pad it kind of rattles.

Since there was insufficient space to download and install Windows 10 from the hard drive, I tried to download and install it from a USB stick where it got stuck at 9% and is now stuck in a boot loop. If I can't fix it I will be sending it back.

I've just checked 16.3gb free after installing all my windows updates.

Mine auto downloaded some Windows updates on first boot so it might have been second boot thinking about it. Not a real issue as I stuck a MicroSd in for the back up but first try gave me some OS install error but will see if second try goes better.

Only 13.6 on first boot? Mine had almost 15 even when i was dowloading windows 10 onto it.

Laptop in immaculate condition....no signs of usage
Pretty heavy for a small Laptop but most of this is down to tablet part
Keypad is very lightweight so when you have it on your lap you need to be careful it doesn't topple back
Came with windows 8.1......nothing so far on laptop about updating but it is on charge now so will see later if update pops up for windows 10
Came with hardly any charging on it...around 8%
Volume is not too great on this compared to my Samsung chrome book
Screen is nice and bright and clear
Connected to Internet very easily and is quick also but then I would expect that from a new device
Bought it for my daughter for school work and she loves it so sending it back is out of question now she has seen it
If the tablet part was lighter it would have been a lot better as weight and sound quality is only problem for me so far when it comes to first impressions but will see how much user friendly it is over the next couple of days

I won't be able to try the W10 upgrade until tomorrow at the earliest but I don't understand why this apparently can't do it but both my 32GB Linx devices did.

Just taken a look at mine.. Will be returning for a refund. The faffing around ti get windows 10 is a pain... Just spent 50 minutes watching an episode of Narcos and the screen has a terrible light flicker. Every 30 seconds or so it will flicker three or four times. Add that to the cashback issue and it's just not worth it it to give as a gift.

I think it's definitely worth £99 as your getting a usable keyboard and the latch / dock mechanism is actually very sturdy compared to my current Dell Venue Pro 11 however the build quality is what I would expect you get from one of the current cheap Chinese imports and I don't think it's as good as the Asus T100 I used to have.

You don't need to do anything like that, windows manages the spare space and does it all automatically. All you've got to do is find a usb stick.

Is it possible to let it download windows 10, find and move the downloaded file to USB, delete the download from the C drive and THEN install windows 10?

100% certain this generation of Atom tablets were all 32 bit as they could only make use of 2GB of ram and you need 4GB to make use of any 64 bit related goodies. Anyway I have opened mine up and compared to my cracked screen Venue Pro 11 it feels like a kids toy and not having full HD will take some getting use to. Will see what other half makes of it before either jumping through the hoops to get Windows 10 on (plus removing that 6GB recovery partition) or packaging it up and sending it back.

What are you on about? The acer switch 11 atom is 32 bit and so is windows 8.1 that's on it. You can check that quite easily

- The £100 rate began at 10:50am on 28th September
- The rate was available on all Acer 11s
- The rate then ended at 11pm on 30th September. The reason the rate has to end at 11pm is due to the fact that the tracking network (who track the cashback) are based in Europe and therefore an hour ahead.
- Microsoft Store do track cashback lower initially, as advised in their 'Useful things to know:

' Cashback may initially track at a lower or higher rate and update once confirmed'

Therefore cashback will update within around 45 - 60 days to the correct amount.

The deal was not active at 5pm and quidco saying 11pm for the product we bought is also incorrect.

I was on Quidco's website and it was still active at 5pm when i placed my order.
But yes the deal ran to Midnight or rather 11pm now stated by Quidco.

Providing you do not return this, and didn't use an external voucher code, the £100 will update within the next 45 - 60 days and can then be 'confirmed' in your account.

The ideal thing to do would be for ms and quidco to come to an understanding where MS only charge us £100 when shipped.

It would completely eliminate all our issues, and leave ms and quidco to sort out the mess they created....which is only fair lol.

ive just called microsoft (and recorded the call, of course, i let the rep know the call was being recorded before anything else) and she told me as far as microsoft are aware, quidco will be paying out £100 cashback, and microsoft are currently in contact with quidco regarding the purchases, im still really on the fence about it, i think ill keep it, then keep on quidcos back for a week and see if any better confirmation is given in that time.

But if they stick £100 in your account today, you can withdraw it and refuse delivery... £100 for nowt.

What to do.........

I have had a look in to your account for you and I can confirm that you will still receive the £100.00 cashback for this purchase, as I can see that this purchase made within the rate timescales.

Just to clarify what the situation is with the £100 rate:
•The £100 rate began at 10:50am on 28th September
•The rate was available on all Acer 11s
•The rate then ended at 11pm on 30th September. The reason the rate has to end at 11pm is due to the fact that the tracking network (who track the cashback) are based in Europe and therefore an hour ahead.
•Microsoft Store do track cashback lower initially, as advised in their 'Useful things to know:

' Cashback may initially track at a lower or higher rate and update once confirmed'

Therefore cashback will update within around 45 - 60 days to the correct amount.

Please accept our apologies again for the unnecessary worry that this situation has caused, and I do hope that I have clarified matters for you all.

just got out of a live chat with quidco rep, she also confirmed the same as rosie almost word for word, hmm, stuck with what to do indeed!

By the way, MS is well aware of the situation as they updated the price to £329.99 but they forgot to remove the "Save £130" violet label :O and this is how it works... :P

They've said before 11pm on 30th semptember was cut off

@jayjay266 - unfortunately due to the way that the system works, they're unable to uplift them to £100 at this point in time. However, Microsoft are looking into resolving these as quickly as possible.

Chocci i contacted the CEO of Quidco obviously......Andy Oldham. Reading all these contradictory posts from both ms and quidco didn't get a definative answer did it, so i went to the top to explain the situation and see if i could get an answer. At the end of the day he runs a business based on trust. He needs to keep that trust in tact. So by contacting him he could put someone on the case.

Rosie i have an issue in that you say "standard terms still apply". Microsoft store had that laptop for sale at £200 for the last few months. They have now put an inflated price of £330 on it.

My main concern is now this term and condition "Cashback will not be paid in conjunction with any other offer".

Are you or microsoft now going to claim that the product was on "offer" at £200 so wont pay cashback because they now put an artificially inflated price on it.

A very reasonable request!

You should be able to change the cashback value on our accounts to £100 as soon as possible, otherwise MS will be seeing a lot of returns by the end of the week.This should be very possible if you are indeed in contact with MS. It will also be saving you a lot of time and resource from people contacting Quidco and MS support with regards to the ambiguity.

I do understand your concern with this. Providing that you meet all of the terms for cashback and purchased the item between those time frames, then you will receive your cashback. We cannot guarantee anything as such because the standard terms still apply (i.e. returning or cancelling the purchase, using an unauthorised voucher code) as with any other transaction.

We're in regular communication with Microsoft Store regarding this and they've confirmed that all eligible sales will be honoured, so please do not be concerned.

I have double confirmation from Quidco and MS. The MS confirmation seems very fluffy and dependent on Quidco. I am also assuming it may differ on a case by case basis, so i would pursue confirmation from both and keep all records. If we all keep the pressure up i am sure we will have it honoured in the end. Keep it up HUKD'ers. :smiley:

The statement from the Quidco rep is good to see but still falls short of what's needed.

It's a simple question: Will cashback be paid to those who purchased before the offer changed?

If not, we need to know now so we can reject the goods (as cancellation is apparently not an option, for some reason). The product is simply not worth £200.

If we have to wait 45/60 days for quidco, 14 days return means nothing.

All this could be avoided if quidco would just send us an email or make an announcement on their website explaining. Surely they must have heard from quite a few people enquiring, why not just set the record straight for those of us who made the purchase?

This will also be the first and last time i use quidco, so much hassle!

How do we know that Quidco_Rep is a genuine Quidco employee?

After all these anxious posts by buyers I'm sure that Quico, Microsoft and Hukd will think twice before making any decisions that will effect it's customers negatively.
I ordered around 1pm so will chance it and wait and see how this whole fiasco unfolds as I know I have 14 days to return for full refund.

With all the consumers rights in this country, including the law passed today, one has to wonder how legal it is for companies to offer cash back promotions, that are not guaranteed, leaving customers to effectively gamble with online purchases.

The Quidco rep post fails to mention the change in rate during the day (30 sept), nor does it categorically say that the £100 will be honoured and paid.

I just contacted Microsoft Store regarding my order and the cash back. The lady I spoke to said it would be honoured. I've kept an email transcript of the conversation. I'm just going to keep the device, if I don't get my money, I'll raise hell with them.

Positive news but I won't believe it until it has been paid in full.

I agree "bemad". Unless a company representative from quidco (as that's who owes us the cashback) makes a public statement that we will get £100 cashback no matter what before the laptop is delivered i'm refusing delivery.

This is a can of worms with 2 companies involved, both of which contradict themselves and each other.

Putting this down to experience and will go out of my way to avoid giving either company any of my business again.

Do you want to risk that? I wouldnt unless you are happy with the machine for £199 They will just say the item is used and in working condition only the price was wrong and Quidco has nothing to do with them as you got the item.

Just refuse delivery and chalk it up to a bad experience.

Make a paypal claim after 59 days, say it is defective and return it if no sign of cashback

How are you going to open a case with paypal against microsoft store? Your issue is cashback from quidco. You bought the laptop from Microsoft store for £200 and they supplied it.

Or on the flip side you could receive the £100 and buy lots of nice new things with it!

What an advisor says whether it is "Yes you will get it" or "No you won't" means absolutely nothing at this stage because each company can just apologise when the dust settles.

However you can write the scripts now for the apologies in the future........

Look at it from this point of view if you take the laptop wait 2months regardless of what they say and you dont get the £100 cashback you cannot return the machine.

We deliver the product and they have to offer you 100 GBP back
However the 100 GBP will come from Quidco, not from Microsoft

tried to cancel with MS but CS rep wasn't able too, even though my order says 'in progress' on the MS site.
She advised refusing delivery.
I wanted to cancel because of the uncertainty, and that amounts to a lot of time being wasted.
Quite frankly a pain in the hole.

Everyone is getting different information. I recommend everyone refuse delivery. This has manipulation written all over it from start to finish, deliberately done to get rid of something that's been on offer for ages and hasn't sold. We think we are getting a great deal with cashback and then when we think we are not getting cashback the ms website changes the price to £330 so we think well actually we are still saving £100.

Do not fall for it, i'm pretty annoyed with all the lies and manipulation and i'm going to get a Teclast X98 Pro for £150 which is much better than this out of date acer which is not worth £200

Anyone managed to successfully cancel their order? Never refused to sign for a product before. What's the process? Just refuse signature.. It will go back to MS they will issue a refund? Is this a longer process than signing returning and getting a refund that way?

All that needs to happen is quidco talk to microsoft, get confirmation one way or the other and let their customers know.

There must have been some sort of communication which resulted in the offer being pulled so how is it not possible for the status of existing orders to be confirmed? Just needs a company that cares about it's customers to do something.

Just had this response from Micorsoft, so basically Quidco blame Microsoft and Microsoft say it wasn't a deal they offered............

On our website, that laptop was already highly discounted. Also, we are not offering any cashback, for any of our products, via our website.
