Great little laptop/tablet hybrid only £99.99 when used in conjunction with exclusive temporary cash back on Quidco.com that is £100

From Quidco:
\I have had a look in to this for you and I can see that this purchase was made at 9:31am, it was agreed today with the retailer that this rate would be eligible until 11pm on 30th September
Just to clarify what the situation is with the £100 rate:

- The £100 rate began at 10:50am on 28th September
- The rate was available on all Acer 11s
- The rate then ended at 11pm on 30th September. The reason the rate has to end at 11pm is due to the fact that the tracking network (who track the cashback) are based in Europe and therefore an hour ahead.
Therefore, to confirm you will still receive the £100 cashback for this purchase so please don't worry

We're so happy that we've been able to resolve this for everyone. We're always happy to help whenever issues do arise with the cashback process. We know it was a bit of a nervous wait for some of you, but we hope it was worth it in the end for this serious bargain! Merry Christmas from us all at Quidco, and enjoy your cashback!!

Hi everyone,

I do understand your concern with this. Providing that you meet all of the terms for cashback and purchased the item between those time frames, then you will receive your cashback. We cannot guarantee anything as such because the standard terms still apply (i.e. returning or cancelling the purchase, using an unauthorised voucher code) as with any other transaction.

We're in regular communication with Microsoft Store regarding this and they've confirmed that all eligible sales will be honoured, so please do not be concerned.

The reason the account is new is because we appear to have been locked out of our normal account - but, if anyone would like to confirm that I am a genuine Quidco employee, you can drop me an email at [email protected] and I'll send you a reply.

Any further questions or concerns, please let me know. I'm happy to take ownership of this for you and ensure everyone has a positive outcome.

Many thanks,

Rosie

Could the BIOS / EFI key be extracted, then used with a standard W10 install USB? I did that on a Linx 10 no issue with same size HD as this Switch.

Thx OP, all the negative reviews can be ignored as this is the signature edition (if only people read hey)

what I can tell you is that my mum has this and it is lovely, however the KB is very plastic feeling and feels cheap as chips, but the screen is lovely...

going to get on for my 7 year old at this price, as he can use a touch screen like a magician and but looks at a KB like it is something only old people use and it is totally alien to him, so he needs to practice

Does that mean it will be shipped with more than 12\13.5Gb free space?

Any thoughts from the Techies here if the SSD can be upgraded? £99 for a Signature edition seems to be a good price but to run Windows 10, little more SSD would be a best bet!

Nope...you can't upgrade storage. But Windows 10 is very space efficient. Just use a micro SD card to install pictures/videos/documents etc.
There will be a 'save apps to SD' option coming in the November Windows 10 update. But in the meantime, you'll have PLENTY of space. Just go easy on the large games installations (at least until save to SD is implemented)
Aeschylus
30 Sep 15 #9
I presume it must do as they base their signature edition on Acer not being allowed to pre install any of their software

Reading the blurb suggested no bloatwere and no time limited software was all signature meant. Seems good value but was worried about recommending for me nephew. Ssd upgrade might help.

I am not convinced Quidco will pay out on this one, and as such has made me pause on buying it, as it is allready on offer, the £100 is aimed at the £449 version I reckon, I might be wrong, but my suspicions are aroused enough

30 Sep 15 #12
Bargain at £99 after quidco but managing disk space on a Windows 8/10 device with 32gb to play with will require regular attention. Not impossible to cope with but can be a pain at times if you intend doing more than surfing, streaming and emails. Look at it as a tablet/notebook and it is well worth a bit of bother considering the price.

Update: Whilst Quidco payments are never guaranteed, the quidco offer is quite specific. One possible scenario is that the Microsoft store wants to clear stock without having to reduce the above the line advertised selling price too much.

For all those worried about storage space. I have an Asus T100 with 32GB of storage. My spare space has actually increased since using Windows 10 (W10 doesn't need a separate recovery partition).

As such, I have Asphalt 8 Airborne installed (nearly 2GB), Office 2016 (1+GB), Firefox, Chrome, iTunes, 50 or so store apps (including other smaller games), lots of little utilities (Glary, CCleaner, Cyber Ghost).

I STILL have 7GB's free.

For most normal people, you are unlikely to ever have a space issue. Obviously if you intend to add photos etc to your laptop, then make sure you add a micro SD (64GB cards are cheap these days).
wenttoabetterplace
30 Sep 15 #15
You'd be surprised. I use my T100 / 32GB as my main computer. I do everything on it - and have lots of things installed. I haven't actually had to do any maintenance on it since I installed a fresh Windows 10 installation. It still has plenty of spare space (7GB's).

Remember, Windows 10 will even work on 16GB Windows tablets...

It will be shipped with Windows 8.1 You'll have to do an upgrade to Windows 10. Once activated, reset the tablet using the Windows 10 restore function. This will wipe away any remnants of Windows 10, but still leave you with the Acer drivers etc installed.
You should have around 18-21GB's of free space (that is what I was left with on my T100 - which has the same sized eMMC storage)

Go to Quidco. Search for Microsoft Store. Click through on the cashback link, then shop as normal on the Microsoft Store website. Place order.
Cashback will track within 24 hours - and should be paid by November 5th.

Don't buy this if you are not happy paying £199.99 for it. Cashback is never guaranteed...

To buy with possibility of £100 Quidco cashback
login (create) to your Quidco account;
seach for Microsoft Store,
click through to Microsoft Store;
search for the £199.99 Switch 11 and add it to your basket
login to / create your Microsoft Store account
pay £199.99 via your preferred payment card / PayPal.
Wait for £100 to show in your Quidco earnings, likely payable between 6 weeks to 6 months after purchase, or never if the cashback is declined.

30 Sep 15 #23
It could....I did the same with my T100 when I messed up a reinstallation.
However, the Windows 10 upgrade tool means you really don't need to worry about spare space. If you don't have enough, it'll just prompt you to use a USB stick to help offload the files whilst it upgrades.

Windows 10 will install on this with no issues.

States that the screen works with acer active pen/stylus.

Will the Microsoft surface pen work?
wenttoabetterplace to forcedv
30 Sep 15 #41
I would be surprised if it works to any great degree. The Surface line use N-Trig pen technology...which is fairly niche. I imagine this Acer will use a budget version of the Wacom technology.
I certainly wouldn't go buying it for its digital pen capabilities. If it is anything like the Dell Venue Pro 8, then the pen aspect will be pretty rubbish.

It has a MicroSD slot and USB slots. Should easily upgrade to Windows 10. People saying they cant just need to do a bit of research. You can download (legally) all the binaries onto a USB stick and execute the upgrade. I had to do this as I have around 7 PCs in my household and wasnt going to muck about waiting for the downlaod every time.

Tracked about 30 minutes after purchase. It is tracking at £1.67 - but that's just how things track with Microsoft Store purchases.
I am sure it will track with the correct amount well within the 14 day (free) returns period.

I was momentarily interested in that Onda tablet that someone else mentioned on here. Then I saw the woeful quality control reports on the previous (Core M) Onda tablet.

Quite happy with a Switch 11 for £99....especially as it has a keyboard. My Z3740 processor has performed superbly on my Asus T100 - so I am sure Z3745 in this Switch 11 will improve performance further.

the reason i bought it because i found out you can install a 2nd hardrive within the keyboard housing without having to open the device and replacing the installed hard drive ( if you are brave enough you can replace the msata drive inside if you like). As long as he 32GB is enough for windows 10 i can install a ssd within the keyboard and install all apps on that.

(I am buying this for a client who needs something cheap and portable with good battery life. I had already told them that they won't be able to store all their photos on this laptop....but if I can install a secondary hard drive, then that will be a major shortcoming resolved!)

Here

http://community.acer.com/t5/Windows-Tablets-and-Convertibles/Aspire-Switch-11-SATA-cable-for-SSD-in-keyboard/td-p/323897
You will need to buy a 15 pound cable from acer no one else sells it and hard drive fits within a a gap in the keyboard

Petty cool :stuck_out_tongue:

The only thing is the cable may be hard to fine
ssjinzo
30 Sep 15 1 #59
this is the post from that link

SW5-111 model direct from Microsoft and then following the advice from these posts I bought:

https://www.acerspareparts.co.uk/product/31762/Acer-HDD-Cable/

and

http://www.sandisk.co.uk/products/ssd/sata/ssd-plus/ -- the 120GB version

Altogether cost me £56 including delivery. Very easy installation steps:

Remove the 11 screws from the bottom of the keyboard
Prise it open with a plastic opening tool
Connect the cable to the SSD
Place the SSD into the bay (although it looks like there is some room for it to move about, once the keyboard is back together it holds in place solidly)
Connect the cable to the SATA interface
Place the keyboard back together and click it all into place
Replace and screw back in the 11 screws
When I logged into windows (I have W10 installed) I then had to:

Open up disk manager and identify my new SSD
Format the SSD (I used GPT rather than MBR for the partition table but it doesn't really matter) and assign it a drive
And that was it. Really simple and a great upgrade that I didn't expect to be able to make.

Having looked at that forum, I can't see any mention of users with Intel Atom versions of this Switch 11....

If it is anything like the Asus T100, then some models come with keyboards that can take an additional HD - but most do not.

I guess I shall find out when I receive my (two) Switch 11's  . My fingers are definitely crossed on this one as I have spare hard drives already available for the upgrade.

This could be turning into a super hot deal !

This is a fantastic price for the Switch 11, heated.

However, given the specs and comments in reviews:

1. As a tablet alone, it's bulky and heavy - about 850g which is about twice the weight of the iPad air. As a hybrid, it's 1.5kg - not excessively heavy but compared to the nettops running identical gear, about 30-40% heavier

2. Battery life - around 4.5-5h whichever mode it is used in. Again some nettops can beat this by a comfortable margin, e.g. Asus X205TA, 9-11h while being under 1kg in weight

If you value the hybrid form factor, this is a stonking deal. However, I purchased an Asus X205TA after much consideration due to it's weight as well as fantastic battery life which were important to me.

I still think the Asus T100 is the best 2 in 1 device that has yet been sold. Brilliant battery life, recharges via USB, nice screen & keyboard, and just 1kg weight.

However, for £99, this Switch 11 is going to be perfect for a couple of people I know.

Also, keep in mind that the X205TA has an anaemic Z3735F processor - and I don't think it has a touchscreen either? Not necessarily a deal breaker....but the Z3745 in the Switch is a much better processor

You're right, the Z3745 is about 20% faster than the Z3735 according to CPUBoss. And yes, the X205TA does not have a touch screen. However, I use it mainly as a travel laptop kept in my briefcase and the fact that it's insanely light and has a battery that almost outperforms a Macbook Air is very important to me.

Lauren C
You can order as many of this product as you wish, just make sure to close and re-open the browser when making a second purchase to ensure that you will receive cashback for each of the purchases and so we can track them both
Purchases usually take within 24 hours, if this hasn't tracked after this time scale then you can raise a claim here: http://www.quidco.com/new-enquiry or you can get in touch with us and we will be happy to do this for you

Hope this is usefull for others

This is all your fault. Tempting me with this deal, promises of £100 cashback and all the ace things this machine can do. I bought a HP Stream that I didn't need a few months ago because it was on here and have since upgraded it to Windows 10 (from 8.1).

Do I need this item?
No.

Do I want this item?

Yes, but the keyboard is very likely to be the same for both variants. It is the empty HDD bay in the keyboard that is important - not the type of SSD/eMMC used on the tablet.

Also, Microsoft have 14 day free returns on their products....by which time, we should have a good idea as to whether the £100 cashback will come good.

Hm, tempted but just not convinced the cashback will pay out on this and can't be bothered with the hassle.

To be honest, I would like something with more power and a better screen so I might wait until Microsoft sell off all their surface pro 3's off cheap when the pro 4 comes out and put the £100 towards that.

It's possible to upgrade to windows 10. First you need to delete all rubbish, uninstall all bloatware. Upgrade to win10, activate and then you can do clean install.

Shame, but 32GB SSD are standart for cheap windows tablets. And thats not enough

Yes it is. With Windows 10, you have about 18-21GB's of free space.
I have been using an Asus T100 for a couple of years now. I have LOTS of things installed (including large things like Office 2016/Asphalt 8 Airborne). I still have 7GB's of free space.
That situation will improve further once Microsoft enable the save app to SD card option.

32GB's is fine.

If I could get £100 cashback on this GUARANTEED I would buy this but Quidco are quite simply middlemen and if Microsoft fail to pay the £100 to Quidco then Quidco won't pay up either!

And as Quidco always have the "cashback not guaranteed" provisio it won't matter if a Quidco rep states that these are included.

So as Quidco will only pass on what they get this could be £1.77 and not £100. Quidco aren't going to make up the difference......that's for sure!

there is a significant chance that the cashback will not 'upgrade' to 100 within the 14 days that the law allows to return an internet purchase. i quite often dont see the 'right' amount umtil the week they clear payment.

that said i think an amendment to the terms and advice they will honour is a very positive sign for anyone who has ordered .

Quidco are generally ok uf things track properly but there have been times in the past they have royally stitched their customers up. they is no chance they will put their hands in their pockets for any mistakes or misunderstandings even if it is their fault.

I think the question is how long does it take them to increase the cash back amount to 100? If it takes longer than 14 days that's the risk. Does anyone know how long it takes for them to increase the cash back to the actual amount?

Edit. even if they were to do this iam guessing they can cancel the cashback as it is paid through Microsoft. As far as quidco are aware it will be paid then Microsoft pulls the rug under there feet and everyone loses.

It is indeed a risky buy if you are solely depending on the £100 cash back but hopefully the members who ordered before MS excluded the model will get the £100. The right question will be exactly when MS instructed Quidco to exclude it and not when Quidco updated their website as Quidco might have not updated their page for a while..
m1keyp1key
30 Sep 15 #164
I'm depending on the £100 cashback and I'd be very disappointed if either tried to wriggle out of this.

I have a screen grab of the original quidco cashback offer. I have it in writing that it is included in the cashback. I then have it in writing that i'll get the cashback after they then change the offer.

This is a microsoft error and they said they will honour it. The money ms lose on this will be peanuts to them and they can always get some good publicity for honouring deals.
Aeschylus
30 Sep 15 2 #165
I knew right at the start, MS would never of meant the £100 on this, i actually think it is a good thing that Quidco and MS changed it as it shows there was a discussion, and MS must of said to Quidco we will honour all up to this point, or one would of hoped Quidco would email all those affected and tell them to cancel their orders
opaninkofi
30 Sep 15 1 #166
If Microsoft refuses to pay some few months from now. All quidco can tell you is "sorry" which is certainly not equal to £100. I doubt 2 months from now Microsoft will be segregating order times of these before change in terms and conditions. If you don't want trouble, cancel the order. I am talking from experience with quidco and hp. All quidco could tell me after the numerous exchange of messages and following up on my behalf was "sorry hp failed to pay and there is nothing we can do about it"

I had a BT offer with all manner of discounts and £200 back from Quidco and they tracked and paid out at £50, despite me having multiple screenshots etc. and the narrative to boot. Eventually after a lot of bluster and threats from me, they raised it to £100 and then £150 with an extra £50 gift card, essentially meeting the £200. However, I got the distinct impression that this was to get rid of me and not have me fight it through the ASA and small claims and put it on the news on a slow news day etc. For them to perhaps cover it across 1000 orders would never have happened.
sfsorrow
30 Sep 15 #177
This would make a neat scam for a retailer to play: offer a load of old stock at a huge discount through a third party so you're under no legal obligation to actually deliver on the discount. Then claim it was a mistake after the period customers have to get their money back has expired.

Microsoft and Quidco need to get together here and explain what's going to happen. If the cashback isn't going to be honoured then they need to contact customers before dispatching the clearly missold products.

I've just spoken online to someone at microsoft store. They are not saying the same thing quidco are saying so for that reason i'm bailing out. I tried to cancel the order and can't but the guy said to reject the order when ups try to deliver and you'll get your money back straight away.

I'm fine with battling 1 company but with 2 companies involved they will each end up denying it's their issue.

A couple of things the ms rep said to me :-

The 100 GB cash back is not a promotion of Microsoft
We deliver the product and they have to offer you 100 GBP back
However the 100 GBP will come from Quidco, not from Microsoft
umaran

So someone is lying! I've just joined a forum to ask a quidco rep :-

I personally think any MS advisor would not be privy to the agreements with Quidco/TCB as that is indirect cashback - what they meant there is no standard "manufacturer to customer" direct cashback. MS would naturally still pay Quidco/TCB who will pay you.

30 Sep 15 1 #186
There's no definite about it I'm afraid.

Quidco won't be making up the £100 if Microsoft are only handing over 1%......it makes absolutely no difference what their website says or what their advisors say because at the end of the day they will only ever hand over what they get!

And I would not be confident that Microsoft will be bothered trying to make it up to you as clearly they will blame Quidco for not being proactive in removing an offer that wasn't valid!

If I had ordered one it would be a case of returning it for a refund (not even opening it) and chalking it up to experience rather than wishing and hoping that the cashback will be honoured. Thankfully the 14 days return period gives you a chance to return back to where you started.

You can take all the screenshots you like but Quidco will always fall back on the old proviso that no cashback amount is guaranteed.

me : hi im worried about a purchase i made yesterday from microsoft it was for the Acer Aspire Switch 11 SW5-111-13SW well i see that the amount of cashback has changed from £100 when i ordered it to £35 now could you tell me whats happening please ?
Abbie
At the moment we believe that everyone who purchased before the rate was changed on our site should still receive the full amount of bonus from Microsoft. So as long as you purchased while the rate was £100, you should still receive the £100 cashback for it.
If this doesn't happen then we can always challenge this with the retailer as that was the amount of cashback they were offering at the time.
me : but im worried and maybe it would be better to return the item for a full refund ?
Abbie
It's entirely up to you. The rate was lowered because Microsoft realised how much of a good deal people were getting with the reduced laptop, but as far as we are concerned we do believe that you should get the £100 cashback, but we may need to challenge this with Microsoft at a later date.
me : this does not sound promissing
Abbie
I'm sorry I can't be more specific but the cashback amounts are never guaranteed and the decision is down to the retailer at the end of the day. But we believe that you should still get the £100 cashback if your purchased when the £100 cashback offer was still in place.
We do have avenues open for raising claims with Microsoft if this isn't the case in the first instance.
me : can you check if it was in place when i ordered please
Abbie
At what time did you order?
I can see you ordered at 13.37, it was still active then yes.
Abbie
They were still offering £100 at that point yes
me : ok so you think it should not be a problem then ?
Abbie
As I said previously we can't guarantee it, but they were offering £100 cashback at that point for your purchase, so you should receive £100 cashback.

Hope that helps you guys that dont have chat with quidco

Microsoft are going to have a lot of refused deliveries I think if none of us can be sure of the £100 cashback due to what sounds like an error their end not double checking the prices of all the Acer's. As others as have said, even if Quidco are on our side it sounds like Quidco won't guarantee the £100 so the risk falls solely on our shoulders.

Personally I don't think the tablet is even worth the £199.99 sale price as it's only got USB 2 and you can get a refurb Dell Venue Pro with a better keyboard for around £200. Will see how things progress today / before it turns up before deciding if I refuse delivery.

On our website, that laptop was already highly discounted. Also, we are not offering any cashback, for any of our products, via our website.

Daniel: at 9:29:20

That was a 3rd party offer from quidco.

All that needs to happen is quidco talk to microsoft, get confirmation one way or the other and let their customers know.

There must have been some sort of communication which resulted in the offer being pulled so how is it not possible for the status of existing orders to be confirmed? Just needs a company that cares about it's customers to do something.

Anyone managed to successfully cancel their order? Never refused to sign for a product before. What's the process? Just refuse signature.. It will go back to MS they will issue a refund? Is this a longer process than signing returning and getting a refund that way?

Everyone is getting different information. I recommend everyone refuse delivery. This has manipulation written all over it from start to finish, deliberately done to get rid of something that's been on offer for ages and hasn't sold. We think we are getting a great deal with cashback and then when we think we are not getting cashback the ms website changes the price to £330 so we think well actually we are still saving £100.

Do not fall for it, i'm pretty annoyed with all the lies and manipulation and i'm going to get a Teclast X98 Pro for £150 which is much better than this out of date acer which is not worth £200

I ordered at about 4pm and the offer was still live then but agree Quidco need to make a statement / email people about this ASAP. I'm going to raise a support ticket tomorrow when their system allows regarding the cashback amount and refuse delivery if not 100% confident in the £100.

I wanted to cancel because of the uncertainty, and that amounts to a lot of time being wasted.
Quite frankly a pain in the hole.

What an advisor says whether it is "Yes you will get it" or "No you won't" means absolutely nothing at this stage because each company can just apologise when the dust settles.

However you can write the scripts now for the apologies in the future........

Quidco "We believed you were eligible but Microsoft declined the £100 and we can only pass on what we are given. We will make a representation on your behalf (but this is just a PR exercise and it won't make any difference)."

Microsoft "You received a £329.99 product for £199.99 and Quidco wrongly advertised a £100 cashback due to not updating the Quidco website. As it it Quidco who actually pay this cashback you will need to take it up with them."

Back to Quidco........

"We believed you were eligible but Microsoft declined the £100 and we can only pass on what we are given. We will make a representation on your behalf (but this is just a PR exercise and it won't make any difference)."

Repeat until you get the message......

Putting this down to experience and will go out of my way to avoid giving either company any of my business again.

Hi everyone,

This post has been highlighted to us and I can only apologise for the incorrect advice that some of you received from some of our agents. We're currently looking into where this information came from as we're happy to confirm that cashback is paid on discounted items through Microsoft/Quidco.

- Microsoft Store do track cashback lower initially, as advised in their 'Useful things to know:

' Cashback may initially track at a lower or higher rate and update once confirmed'

Therefore cashback will update within around 45 - 60 days to the correct amount.

Please accept our apologies again for the unnecessary worry that this situation has caused, and I do hope that I have clarified matters for you all.

If you are at all concerned about your own purchase, please send a support ticket in to us and put 'FAO HUKD' in the description, and we'll get back to you as a top priority today.

Many thanks,

Rosie

wenttoabetterplace to forcedv

Yep - someone from Quidco needs to stand behind that comment and say that the £100 cashback WILL 100% be paid...regardless of whether Microsoft decide to change their mind.

It's a brand issue - either Quidco can be trusted, or they can't.

After all these anxious posts by buyers I'm sure that Quico, Microsoft and Hukd will think twice before making any decisions that will effect it's customers negatively.

Q45
1 Oct 15 #264
All this could be avoided if quidco would just send us an email or make an announcement on their website explaining. Surely they must have heard from quite a few people enquiring, why not just set the record straight for those of us who made the purchase?

This will also be the first and last time i use quidco, so much hassle!

The statement from the Quidco rep is good to see but still falls short of what's needed.

It's a simple question: Will cashback be paid to those who purchased before the offer changed?

If not, we need to know now so we can reject the goods (as cancellation is apparently not an option, for some reason). The product is simply not worth £200.

I have double confirmation from Quidco and MS. The MS confirmation seems very fluffy and dependent on Quidco.

Rosie i have an issue in that you say "standard terms still apply". Microsoft store had that laptop for sale at £200 for the last few months. They have now put an inflated price of £330 on it.

My main concern is now this term and condition "Cashback will not be paid in conjunction with any other offer".

Are you or microsoft now going to claim that the product was on "offer" at £200 so wont pay cashback because they now put an artificially inflated price on it.
Quidco_Rep to m1keyp1key
1 Oct 15 2 #278
@m1keyp1key - This term refers more to voucher discounts, although I do understand it is ambiguous in this case. However, in this scenario do be assured that it wouldn't affect cashback.
jayjay266

You should be able to change the cashback value on our accounts to £100 as soon as possible, otherwise MS will be seeing a lot of returns by the end of the week. This should be very possible if you are indeed in contact with MS. It will also be saving you a lot of time and resource from people contacting Quidco and MS support with regards to the ambiguity.

Personally if i was running quidco and it was possible i'd put the £100 in peoples accounts and show the trust in us that they expect from us. After doing a bit of reading around regarding quidco there are a lot of people where tracked cashback has not been paid out for some reason or other. Sometimes cashback has decreased and promised cash back has never materialised. In all fairness i will get a refund on this 100 risk is too rich for my blood. I wish everyone the best of luck.

For those that are keeping, this may be of interest :-

Basically this model is included in the reliability promise and you could get your money back if it develops a fault in the first 12 months.

Quidco.. Why did the cashback offer change on your site to exclude this model. Who made the decision that that model was to be excluded, when as you now say Microsoft are happy to pay out on discounted items

I don't think Quidco really need to answer these questions. Clearly there was an error when they came up with the terms of the Switch 11 cashback. Microsoft and Quidco are doing the right thing by paying out to those who purchased when the t&c's were ambiguous. But they certainly don't need to explain why they are now excluding the Atom powered Switch 11 from the cashback offer. It sounds like you missed out....and now are annoyed you can't get the same offer?!!

This was in my inbox this morning.

Hi,

I am writing to you as you purchased the Acer Aspire Switch 11 between 28th September - 30th September 2015 for £100 cashback.

We are aware of several concerns regarding this offer so I do hope that this message will reassure you.

Although your cashback is currently tracking at a much lower rate, please be assured that this is completely normal for Microsoft Store, and they will uplift to the correct amount within a few weeks. We are in regular with communication with Microsoft Store and they have advised us that they are trying to work through these as quickly as possible, as they do understand the uncertainty of not being able to see the amount of cashback you are expecting.

Your cashback did track successfully which is a good sign, and as long as you have met all terms for cashback (e.g. you do not return the item, did not use a voucher code/gift card, completed the purchase wholly online) then we see no issue in you receiving the cashback.

We can never make guarantees within the cashback industry (due to the above exclusions/terms), but I'd like to assure you that we are monitoring this issue and we'll keep you updated until we're happy that it is resolved for you.

Kind regards,

The Quidco Support Team

I doubt if they would allow a return if you have changed the OS. Probably a moot point as you can only upgrade from 8 to 10, not clean install without first doing the upgrade and by the sound of it, the machine has too low a spec to manage the upgrade

100% certain this generation of Atom tablets were all 32 bit as they could only make use of 2GB of ram and you need 4GB to make use of any 64 bit related goodies. Anyway I have opened mine up and compared to my cracked screen Venue Pro 11 it feels like a kids toy and not having full HD will take some getting use to. Will see what other half makes of it before either jumping through the hoops to get Windows 10 on (plus removing that 6GB recovery partition) or packaging it up and sending it back.

If you want a tablet to use in the home it seems good, especially given that you can turn it into a full laptop any time you want.

Outside the home it's a small laptop. Realistically you can't carry around a tablet of this size.

For me it will replace a Linx 10, but I still have a Linx 8 for true portability. This is a laptop with tablet specs. Worth £100 if that's useful to you (for me it's good for travel) but it's neither a good laptop nor a proper tablet.

Has anyone seen a case for the tablet section only?

I think it's definitely worth £99 as your getting a usable keyboard and the latch / dock mechanism is actually very sturdy compared to my current Dell Venue Pro 11 however the build quality is what I would expect you get from one of the current cheap Chinese imports and I don't think it's as good as the Asus T100 I used to have.

First impressions
Seal was broken like others have said
Laptop in immaculate condition....no signs of usage
Pretty heavy for a small Laptop but most of this is down to tablet part
Keypad is very lightweight so when you have it on your lap you need to be careful it doesn't topple back
Came with windows 8.1......nothing so far on laptop about updating but it is on charge now so will see later if update pops up for windows 10
Came with hardly any charging on it...around 8%
Volume is not too great on this compared to my Samsung chrome book
Screen is nice and bright and clear
Connected to Internet very easily and is quick also but then I would expect that from a new device
Bought it for my daughter for school work and she loves it so sending it back is out of question now she has seen it
If the tablet part was lighter it would have been a lot better as weight and sound quality is only problem for me so far when it comes to first impressions but will see how much user friendly it is over the next couple of days

Got me thinking that these are customer returns though Andy. Broken seals, mine was charged fully, someone elses 8%. Different free storage. You'd of thought these would all be similar from the same batch.

Also my trackpad is strange, The part nearest the outer edge of the case is not flush and when you press down on it there is alot of give before it actually "clicks" and if you press lightly in the centre of the the pad it kind of rattles.

Mine has 01/2015 on the back, anyone elses made then or are we getting all different ones ?

Mine arrived broken seal... Had around 14gb free. With the odd acer app installed. Touch pad is horrible on the right hand side... The left side of the touch pad is fine and quieter. Had a quick read around the Windows 10 install issue and trying it in tablet only mode in case it's a driver compatibility issue like some others have said. I find it incredible that this so called "Signature Edition" has failed to update itself to Windows 10 twice already and Acer Care Center is installed and configured to auto start....
m1keyp1key
2 Oct 15 #398
It's almost certainly a driver issue. The storage issue should be a non issue because i don't even get far enough into the installation for enough files to be copied to create a problem if there was some little quirk with storage locations.

2 Oct 15 #423
That's fair enough. I think the value for money issue is borderline - £99 for a Windows 8.1 tablet/laptop isn't bad.

What I think the bigger issue here is that these were sold as new 'signature' machines and it's looking increasingly like they may be refurbs, full of bloat and unable to update to Windows 10.

I haven't checked my machine yet but the box says manufactured in 2014...

Mine is 2014, and - although I'm not sure this is indicative of anything - the updates history shows three separate previous periods in which it was updated, from 2014 onwards.

In response to Maani12, if it runs as well as you'd like then I don't think there's any need to upgrade. I'd be happy with mine except I'd like Windows 10 and the problems I've already faced (and the fact it's telling me I need to repair my computer) don't bode well should anything go wrong in the future.

Same story here, signature sticker over the broken silver seal, also a few minor scuff marks around the power socket and a slight rip in the box. Everything else looks as new, so to be honest not that worried about it.

The windows 10 upgrade failed twice for me, before and after a bios update, I've done nothing else with the machine other than try to upgrade it and frankly it's a real disappointment, as otherwise seems an OK little machine for a ton, with similar build quality to my Acer Chromebook.

Tried chatting to Microsoft help and they are of no use at all as expected...

Please check this link and locate your model pc for it will provide driver support for the following products that qualify for the Windows 10 upgrade. The link is http://us.acer.com/ac/en/US/content/windows10-eligible-models

Did you recently installed a hardware device on your computer?
9:09 pm
This is a brand new machine, Acer Aspire Switch 11 SW5-111-13SW and is showing as compatible driver support. This is new out of the box bought from the Microsoft store and arrived today, there has been no new hardware installed!
9:11 pm
A lot of people seem to be having the same problem, see the forum thread below http://www.hotukdeals.com/deals/acer-aspire-switch-11-sw5-111-13sw-199-99-only-99-99-with-quidco-until-tonight-microsoftstore-2291505?page=20#comments

This looks like a real gaff from Microsoft if these can't easily be upgraded to win10 as advertised...
9:13 pm
Please refer to your manufacturer for the updated driver for your pc.
9:14 pm
We can do workaround for that. Did you tried to restart your computer?
9:16 pm
Yes, after it fails it just does a factory reset and boots to win 8
9:20 pm
I only bought it for win 10 though, as an upgrade for my daughter, so if it's not going to work it can go back...
9:22 pm
May I know your previous operating system is?
9:22 pm
Win 8. It was delivered new with win 8 - please see your own site for info - http://www.microsoftstore.com/store/msuk/en_GB/pdp/Acer-Aspire-Switch-11-SW5-111-13SW--Atom-1.33-GHz--11.6%E2%80%B3--2-GB-Ram--32-GB-HDD/productID.312507400

Can you open your computer to Safe Mode?
9:26 pm
Remove all floppy disks, CD's and DVD's from your computer, and then restart your computer.
9:26 pm
Click the Start button, click the arrow next to the shutdown button and then click restart
9:27 pm
I can yes, it boots fine back to win 8 though, why will safe mode help the upgrade?
9:27 pm
What do you mean it boots back to Windows 8. Did the upgrade to Windows 10 successful?
9:31 pm
the windows 10 upgrade fails with a blue screen every time (I've tried twice) and the machine does a restore to factory default, so as if logging in for the first time but back to windows 8. Ironically the first thing it asks after a factory reset is would I like to upgrade to win10 now or later :disappointed:
9:33 pm
It works on win8 fine, I want win10, I bought it to run win10, as it was advertised as working with win10 ...
9:34 pm
Did you do a system restore?
9:35 pm
May I know where did you buy your pc? Is it from the Microsoft Store?
9:37 pm
it did a system restore all on it's own after the upgrade failure
9:38 pm
Yes as mention this is from the Microsoft store Order #********** arrived this afternoon.
9:39 pm
if you've done the factory reset. You can reinstall an operating system.
9:42 pm
May I ask if you can still login to the desktop?
9:43 pm
I don't need to re-install an operating system, it has a recovery partition, windows8 runs fine. The issue is win10 doesn't install...
9:44 pm
Did you check if the system requirements to upgrade is compatible with your computer? please refer to this link http://www.microsoft.com/en-in/windows/windows-10-specifications
9:46 pm
Yes it's compatible, I checked before I bought it, I checked before I upgraded and just to be sure I checked again earlier in the conversation when you asked if I'd checked! Do you need me to check again...

LOL powlest. That's some moron reading from a checklist that knows naff all about computers. Especially the bit about floppy disks, wtf is their checklist from the 1980s?

If they knew anything about the laptop then they would know it doesnt even have an optical drive.

I had some muppet keep telling me it's 64 bit because their website says so. I gave them the acer product code and link to the acer spec and he still argued it's 64 bit.

This machine is nothing but a time toilet.

So has anyone, anywhere, ever managed to install windows 10 on this machine?
JP211190
3 Oct 15 #436
I spoke to a member of the Microsoft tech team and he confirmed that in order to install Windows 10 you will require 20GB free hard disk space. Without the 20GB free hard disk space the installation of the upgrade will fail.
He did however say that it is possible to upgrade using a USB hard drive however in order for this to be successful you will need to purchase a Windows key!!
So it looks like we're stuck with Windows 8.1 unless we pay for a Windows 10 license!
m1keyp1key to JP211190
3 Oct 15 #439
Not true, the "tech team" are talking rubbish! There is something about these machines that windows 10 doesn't like and it's not the hard drive space.

Taken directly from ms :-

Small storage devices, like devices with 32GB hard drives or older devices with full hard drives, may need additional storage to complete the upgrade. You'll see instructions during the upgrade telling you what to do. You may need to insert a USB flash drive to complete the upgrade.

Still undecided on whether I should return the laptop to Microsoft as it's a good machine for £99, if Quidco pay out on the cashback!!

andy_sym
3 Oct 15 #440
Don't wipe any drives to do a fresh Windows 10 install as you need to perform an upgrade from Windows 8 to get your free Windows 10 license. If you manage the upgrade and activate Windows 10 then you should be ok to then go back and wipe whatever you want like that 6gb recovery partition as Microsoft have your Switch license on their servers.
m1keyp1key
3 Oct 15 #441
Today i've got the "get windows 10" icon in my system tray. If you then check your pc it says EVERYTHING is compatible.

+ 1 piece of important info saying you wont be able to reset your pc to factory settings after the upgrade.
andy_sym
3 Oct 15 #442
You should be able to reset your Acer unless the 6gb recovery partition and / or the USB stick or MicroSD are somehow wiped surely?
m1keyp1key to andy_sym
3 Oct 15 #443
Nope, the failure of the windows 10 update has done something to the laptop meaning you cant restore factory settings.

So even attempting a win10 update somehow manages to mess with something.
andy_sym
3 Oct 15 #444
Well if the upgrade has messed with the recovery partition then maybe it's trying to install to that or something weird?

I'm going to try a log file analysis later as Windows 10 setup creates log files located in the hidden folders:

$Windows.~BT\sources\Panther
$Windows.~BT\sources

It's been ages since I had to deal with Microsoft. I contacted them about this and I've been absolutely staggered by Microsoft's rudeness, arrogance, and incompetence.

The guy I dealt with had no idea about his company's products, yet was still arrogant to use sarcasm when he couldn't understand me, and then ended the chat. Complained to his manager and heard nothing further.

It seems they've learnt nothing in the last 10 years.

£99 for WIndows 10 and this appalling customer service could be forgiven. £200 for Windows 8.1 and hours spent trying to upgrade following their awful instructions and this is looking like a dog.

like everyone else, Windows 10 upgrade fails and now have the following folders taking up space on C: drive

-ESD

- $WINDOWS.~BT

- $WINDOWS.~WS

I'm going to delete the two $WINDOWS.~ folders, BUT what is in the ESD folder?
Is it restore files for Windows 8.1 or the failed Windows 10?
andy_sym
3 Oct 15 #447
The ESD folder it set up files yes. Like a true geek I'm determined to get this to Windows 10 so am now using the MS download tool to put the set up files on my MicroSD card this time and also trying a sfc /scannow from command prompt to check the drives and have copies of the latest BIOS and Chipset Driver from Acer site saved too. If this doesn't work then I think I might actually factory reset the laptop using the recovery partition before trying an upgrade on first full boot. A little worrying I only found one person on Amazon I think it was that has successfully upgraded their Switch 11 to Windows 10!
m1keyp1key
3 Oct 15 #448
Lol Andy. I've pretty much done all that.

I hate being beaten by technology. I'm having one last go. I've got the latest bios, i've got all the latest drivers installed. MS notification says it's compatible.

Just as something different i decided to turn off windows defender and use my usb stick to install but when prompted for more storage also decided to go the memory slot way just in case there was some kind of conflict using the usb for both.

I've now covered just about everything i can think of.

Nearly finished on the blue screen of installing windows, next to the black screen where no doubt it will fail again.
andy_sym
3 Oct 15 #449
I've only used MicroSD slot route so far and has issues so not sure that will help you either @m1keyp1key but good luck! I think the factory reset option then trying on first boot might be a good bet too but I might have lost the last of limited enthusiasm for this thing in the next hour or so
m1keyp1key
3 Oct 15 #450
I can't factory reset so not even an option for me.

When i put windows 10 on my home built desktop and never encountered a single issue i thought it was the best thing ever.

andy_sym
3 Oct 15 #455
Tried a few more things but I think the only way to fix these is to use an external boot device of some kind with Windows 8 media on to get a clean install of Windows 8 working first then do the update. This might also mean that we don't have to mess around with other drives etc during the Windows 10 update.

As for Microsoft sorting us out - I haven't even tried contacting their support as they are usually useless and it seems others who have tried have confirmed their support hasn't improved and they know NOTHING about one of their so called Signature products!

Btw guys if anyone has any trouble getting their money back make sure you tell them they are mis-selling their product. I have it in writing from both the site and chat that they think this is 64bit and has a 32gb ssd.

Just about to try installing Windows 10 myself.

Just to confirm, has anyone tried installing a generic Windows 8.1 iso....and then installing Windows 10?

I would be amazed if this can't be upgraded to Windows 10...and for £100 (x2), I'm definitely going to give it a try.
andy_sym
3 Oct 15 #459
I can totally understand and think it's a joke that even the recovery partition is corrupt either before of after trying a Windows 10 upgrade on a Signature Edition device like these but I'm going to try repairing things using a download of Windows 8.1 home from http://windows.microsoft.com/en-gb/windows-8/create-reset-refresh-media Then when I have it booted and activated go for the Windows 10 upgrade. Will report back how that goes but if that doesn't work then the only other thing I can think of is wiping both the recovery partition and c drive using the fresh Windows 8.1 install but that might then cause driver issues etc.
wenttoabetterplace
3 Oct 15 #460
This is the approach I will be taking. I've reinstalled Windows 8.1 many times via the generic ISO file on the MS website....and it doesn't cause driver issues. Sometimes Windows Update doesn't find a driver - but it has never caused a system not to boot.

If this doesn't work, then I can only assume this is a BIOS issue.

On a side note, I'm amazed that no other Switch 11 owners have reported this problem elsewhere. Perhaps there is something about these signature tablets that is actually causing the problem...

I bought it 3 weeks ago and have pent most days of all of the 3 weeks full time trying to Upgrade to Windows 10. Finally gave it up and returned to Microsoft Store, as Microsoft technical help agreed that it can not be upgraded. A fine product if you wish to stay with Windows 8.1 But Trade Description issue!!! re win 10.

# How will this product be used? Personal ✘ No, I do not recommend this product.
m1keyp1key
3 Oct 15 #462
I don't think it's a driver issue. The problem comes in the upgrading part of windows and around 35% of "copying files". It doesn't even get to the configuring / driver part of the installation.
wenttoabetterplace to m1keyp1key
3 Oct 15 #463
Just a thought. Try turning off drive encryption (if it is on), and try turning off secure boot in the BIOS.
They can both be switched back on after W10 is installed - but they *may* be the reason for the failure to copy all of the setup files.

I'm just downloading the W8.1 iso. I'll wipe everything shortly and try to get it upgraded to Windows 10.

What a faff .
andy_sym

I can't seem to change anything in the bios really, certainly not the secure boot stuff. Trying a Reset your PC from the Windows 8.1 USB stick I booted now...

m1keyp1key
3 Oct 15 #468
Well if you can see into the future you could of saved us all the hassle and told us these were crap beforehand.

MS have done everything WRONG here. You may have confidence in a full refund, i dont.

I've been mis-sold goods that were not the spec they were listed as. Goods that are not fit for purpose. Goods where the seal has been broken. Goods where the touchpad doesn't work properly.

I dont care if the seller is microsoft or an individual on ebay, this is bang out of order. I'm not prepared to sit and wait weeks for them to get the product back and then they go pull another stunt and come up with some excuse not to refund fully.

If it was simply a mistake i wouldn't of put in a dispute. But this looks like trotters independent traders.
andy_sym
3 Oct 15 1 #469
I agree with others - you only have to involve PayPal if Microsoft don't offer you a refund surely!?

As for mine, I'm wiping all partitions inc the recovery partition and C then installing fresh Windows 8.1 as I can't fix the corrupt factory partition anyway. If this doesn't then let me update to Windows 10 then mine will be going back as I have done far more than can be expected reasonable to upgrade mine to Windows 10 which Microsoft clearly state it should!
wenttoabetterplace
3 Oct 15 2 #470
If you expect the people at the end of a customer service line for a huge company like Microsoft to know the exact specifications of each device they sell....well, you must be wet behind the ears!

You bought these tablets knowing that they had eMMC chips (I and others already told you). You bought it knowing you could use the SSD thing as a loophole to then be able to return....not that you needed such a thing as Microsoft offer a hassle free full refund.

The Switch 11 is known to have a very average touchpad. It is a cheap tablet made to a budget. So no surprises there.

The seal being broken is likely just a quirk of the Signature Edition process. How else do they get rid of the manufacturer bloat that is normally installed?

You should choose your battles better. This one is just going to waste everyone's time. Paypal will of course rule in your favour, but you'll still have to return the computer in exactly the same way as if you had just taken a few minutes on live chat to request an RMA slip.

Creating a Paypal dispute is a waste of time. But whatever floats your boat.

Yep, in Windows 8.1
Just installed the wireless driver from that 'driverfree.org' website (actual download files come direct from Acer).
Just running Windows Update as we speak. The rest of the tablet is working well enough to at least get me to the point where I can then do a Windows 10 upgrade

One thing to note - when I wiped all of the partitions, one of the partitions was different to any I have seen before when doing W8.1 clean installs. It was a 64MB 'ESM' partition ... whereas normally it is a 100MB partition at the start of the drive.
Acer may have installed some borked partition system....which is perhaps why Windows 10 couldn't install.

I am quietly confident that this clean installation process will give me a perfect working order Windows 10.

If it works, then I will be v.happy with the tablet.

Once all of those Acer drivers are installed, the keyboard/touchpad start working - as does the touchscreen and the audio system.
I am just installing the last few updates. Once that is done, I should be able to get the Windows 10 dialogue to pop up - and will then be able to install W10 via USB.

Progress

If you are struggling to invoke the Windows 10 upgrade advisor (which ties your computer to a Windows 10 licence), run the following batch file;

Ok how to get Windows 10 installed which worked for me - note this my invalidate some part of your warranty or leave your machine not working 100% or similar!

*Download the Windows 8.1 media creation tool from Microsoft here and select Windows 8.1 Home and place this on a USB drive

*Boot from your USB drive and before installing anything click on advanced and delete all partitions as you don't need any of these afterwards. Select the new single drive and install Windows 8.1 on this which was now about 28GB I think.

*At this point you will probably need to use a micro USB to OTG adapter and a USB hub like I did as the touchscreen and keyboard dock don't work. You might be able to add the drivers for these to your Windows 8.1 set up above or slipstream them etc but I didn't do this hence the need for the OTG adapter.

*Once Windows 8.1 has booted add the Windows 8.1 drivers from Acer's web site and once you have WiFi working activate Windows 8 using the online activation system and turn off. NOTE: I didn't bother updating ANY Windows 8.1 drivers or adding security updates etc as Windows 10 will have it's own updates and this just wastes time.

*At this stage you should be able to use the Windows 10 media creation tool here to place the set up files on another USB drive or your MicroSD drive etc and begin Windows 10 installation which went fine for me.

*I then ran Disk Clean up on C Drive and removed whatever I could leaving me with 21.2GB free. Now trying to manually remove windows.old

I did system clean up but for some reason the Driver Store folder in windows.old is still there. Looking to see if I can free up more space as 21.1GB free of 28.1GB can still be tweaked :stuck_out_tongue:
EDIT: Seems that even using compact /compactos:always via Command prompt as admin didn't free much more up so 21GB looks to be as much space as I can get to work with.

I did the same method as Andy...you delete the recovery partition, so if you do have a problem you've lost your get out of jail clause, saying that it worked fine for me. after installing a fresh copy for 8.1, it kept freezing until the platform drivers were installed, had to be quick but it's fine now

Well, after the seeming disaster of this deal....I am actually very impressed with this tablet. Yes, it's a bit heavy, and the speakers aren't brilliant - but the screen is great for what it is (bright and clear). Touchscreen is sensitive, keyboard is pretty good, and the touchpad is much improved in Windows 10 (for whatever reason).

Battery life seems pretty good too...and I like the way the screen can be turned around for watching videos etc.

Windows 10 is also feeling v.v.quick on here.

It would have been a fair purchase at £199. At £99, it's a bargain (IMO)

3 Oct 15 1 #529
Just depends where you are, for example if you are in flats or an area with loads of different wifi networks there are only so many channels in the 2.4ghz band and the connections will interfer with eachother. I had this issue at a event i was at recently, 5ghz was perfect but 2.4 was not usable or was intermittant.

Its ok for me if im at home but i just dont understand why Acer chose not to put a dual band chip, unless they had loads left over from old stock.

Also 5ghz gives you faster speeds than 2.4 an the channel width is wider.

k1ngchr15
4 Oct 15 #540
My question is, does the connector pins from the keyboard to the screen have dedicated power lines.

ie. if you were to regulate the current of another battery that was modified into the keyboard, would it actually have a way of feeding the tablet. Adding an ssd and some extra battery life would make this tablet very formidable.

Also, the tablet isn't freezing in win8.1, and the keyboard and trackpad do work without any updates. They just get randomly disconnected if you're not using them for a while.
I managed to get everything done to install win 10 with only the wifi driver, i just kept moving the cursor until it was at the stage where the computer didn't need input anymore.....

You can fit a standard 2.5 hard drive, yes, as long as its SATA it'll fit and it works fine (I'm using a 400Gb one now). The 2.5 (non SSD) disks are fatter but I can't see any bulge in the keyboard base.

I received mine last Friday and have been chasing this trhead... seems to be a lot of issues to update to w10.

Its good to know that you can add an ssd disk but this would be for storage only as the OS must stay on the 32gb integrated disk... so why would u go to a ssd disk then? better to get one of those £28 128GB micro sd card... ( get that price with bespoke and then another 18% cashback on top...) so u can use it as tablet without missing all the storage?

Also, I just opened and im not happy with the feeling of it... keyboard looks quite cheap, and the tablet is quite big!!

Assuming we get the £100 cashback... do u think this worth £100 + all the effort to get it updated to w10?

Thanks!
wenttoabetterplace to mats123
4 Oct 15 #544
It really isn't that much effort to update to Windows 10....and once you are there, it really does perform very well.
The build quality isn't amazing - but then again, the keys on the keyboard have a pretty good feel, and the touchpad is much improved when running Windows 10. It is definitely worth £99! Keep in mind that the Z3745 processor is significantly better than the Z3735F processor found in most other Windows tablets in this price range - and they don't come with a keyboard either...

As for the SSD/HDD vs micro SD situation. Personally, I am upgrading mine to a HDD in the keyboard. Reason being; OneDrive works a lot better when on a normal hard disk rather than a micro SD (when using a micro SD, you need to create symbolic links just to get OneDrive to work on the sd card). Micro SD cards are also a lot slower than a proper hard disk...so it just makes more sense all round to have the 32GB eMMC drive + (for example) a 500GB HDD.

Definitely well worth the £100.
m1keyp1key
4 Oct 15 #545
To me it's not worth £100. My touchpad rattles and feels like it could snap off. The windows 10 update is nothing but hassle.

I also think the tablet is too heavy and makes the whole thing top heavy when it's docked.

The excitement about adding an extra drive to it, i don't understand that. You might just as well buy a better product in the first place if you want to add extra storage. The lead costing £15 is a joke. It's also not £100 if you then upgrade it, so why bother with all the hassle when you can pick up something better like the asus transformer for £200

For someone who doesn't have the touchpad issue, is happy with windows 8.1 and feels confident of cashback then it might be worth £100.

However when you can get a Teclast for £160 with these specs :-

Windows 10 + Android 5.1 Dual OS
9.7 Inch IPS 2048*1536 IPS capacitive touch screen
14nm Intel Cherry Trail T4 Z8500 Quad Core 2.24GHz CPU
2x64 LPDDR3-1600 4GB RAM + 64GB eMMC ROM
Support Bluetooth 4.0/WiFi/HDMI/WiDi functions
2.0MP Front + 5.0MP Rear dual cameras
Support TF Card extend up to 64GB max

does even £100 look like the bargain we thought it all was?

4 Oct 15 #550
Upgrading to Windows 10 is NOT difficult. You just want it to be to fit your viewpoint .

I think we can all be absolutely confident of the £100 cashback.

Most people have spare hard drives kicking about. A £12 cable makes use of that...

This Acer actually has a warranty that is worth something (if it fails in a year, we get a refund). What happens when your Teclast has an issue?! Judging by the forums, it is a real hassle trying to get repairs/refunds.

Also, the previous Teclast models had serious build quality issues...definitely worth keeping in mind given the potential turnaround times for warranty repairs/replacements.

wenttoabetterplace
4 Oct 15 #549
I thought you had already bought one of these Switch 11's?

The X98 has an inferior processor - and costs a tenner more. You also don't have the luxury of being able to expand the storage via the spare SATA space in the keyboard...

If that X98 had an Atom X5, then it would be an excellent deal. But £110 for a Chinese tablet, with no real warranty & a poor processor....that doesn't seem like good value to me.

4 Oct 15 #551
I did and it's back in the box. Too many drawbacks with this. It's probably a very decent small laptop once you've got Windows 10 installed and fitted another hard drive but it's too big and heavy to be a useful tablet. I'll stick with owning both a more powerful full size laptop and a Windows tablet for the commute etc.
m1keyp1key
4 Oct 15 #554
It is difficult. If it was easy then it would of automatically installed and it wouldn't of taken a day for someone to find a workaround that isn't the most straight forward thing to do. I spent 12 hours trying to get windows 10 on it. I could build 12 computers in that time! Add to that the touchpad rattling everytime i press it. In fact it's not even a touchpad, when you do a left click with it to actually make contact with anything the touchpad moves about 1cm below the rest of the case. The best way i can explain the touchpad is it's like a lose battery compartment on the back of a tv remote.

As for being confident about the cashback you can be as confident as you like but it makes no difference to the outcome. Take away opinions and at the moment the acer has cost everyone £200, and that's a fact.

£12 for a cable, you should post that on here, see how much heat you get for it.

As for warranty etc with a chinese tablet that's a fair point. However if you open your acer and put a hard drive in, then you have voided your warranty.

1: Yes it took a day for someone to finish getting a workaround, but that saves everyone else having to look and thus saves them the time, after that it is convoluted, but not essentially difficult...
(most of the time finding the workaround was probably spent waiting for the windows 10 installer to actually do anything, I must've run it about 6 times myself...)

2: I admit the cashback argument, Microsoft may back out 3 weeks later and we'll be angry but, without a product fault, unable to return the device.

3: I debate modifying the hdd into the keyboard, since there is no warranty void sticker in the way I would argue that they will uphold the warranty since they have allowed access to make such a modification...

Personally at £99 this is a fair price, at £199 I probably wouldn't have bothered...
And as for you comment on how much heat for the £12 cable, the saying "the cost of everything and the value of nothing" comes to mind. It would go cold because £12 looks like the standard pricing, but for those of us who need/want the expansion, that isn't a bad price.
wenttoabetterplace
4 Oct 15 #557
It took YOU 12 hours to get a solution.
If I hadn't wasted time waiting for Windows 8.1 files to install, I would have had the solution in under 2 hours...
& for all those that are following the lead of andy_sym and myself, the process takes about 20 minutes of hands on time, and however much time required to download Windows 8.1 and Windows 10 direct from MS.

There are no 'warranty void' stickers on the keyboard...so the warranty will not be void if we fit a hard drive. Also, if it has to go for repair, I'll just remove the hard drive.

People pay £60 for each incremental step up in iPhone storage capacity...whereas this £12 cable gives me the potential to use some redundant hard drives....and thus give me an extra 640GB of storage.

The deal is what you make of it. You seem to be looking for hurdles - when the reality is that there aren't really any hurdles any more. £99 for a Windows 10 tablet with a v.nice screen, a usable keyboard/touchpad and a proper UK warranty. Pretty good IMO!

I'm just providing some balance to your opinions. After all, your opinions have been shaped by the 12 hours you wasted trying to install Windows 10.
For those of us that got a solution in a much more reasonable time frame, it's actually a pretty good little tablet. Heavy, yes...but the screen is bright and clear - and there is no sign of lag or anything else untoward.

I will say it is £99 - because I have never seen a Quidco rep personally come on here and make explicit statements that confirm we will get cashback (normal exclusions apply, of course). Neither Quidco nor MS are likely to renege on those promises....after all, it will damage the reputation/trust of both companies.

Anyway, I hope you have more luck with whatever you buy next.
