This is a great piece of kit, it connects using Wi-Fi Direct, which is contrary to the Chromecast requiring a Router to be installed. This comes in very handy when you plan to use it in a caravan without internet or hotel rooms that wont allow the chromecast to use the routers. You simply connect it up to the TV using a suitable device (I used my Samsung Galaxy S7 with the Smart view function). It can also be used to mirror the screen of any PC running windows 8 or 10 (with a wifi connection). The first minor issue is that framerates can be a little jittery at times, this issue is made up by the fact there is VERY LITTLE LATENCY between the devices, which again seems to beat the chromecasts abysmal latency I've seen on youtube etc. You could use this for light gaming, but still wouldn't recommend it for something like Counter Strike or Call of Duty, etc. where reactions are key. The second minor issue is that it HAS to receive a firmware update in order to be used with most recent devices. My S7 would not connect otherwise. This is easy to do on Windows 8 & 10 simply install the app from the Microsoft app store, connect device to your TV, then update it. (I have windows 7 still, so I had to use work laptop). A potential issue for some of you is that the device connects it's via wi-fi, this in turn forces you to use your mobile data. It was ok for me as I pre-downloaded what I wanted to watch (again because no router available in caravan) but if you wish to use Netflix, etc then you will need a big data tarrif to do so. I think it's better than the Chromecast due to what I needed to use it for, but is very much down to what you require it to do. The issues are very minute to me, but again depends what you want to do with it.Read full review

Microsoft claim this product works with any Windows 10 device or any Windows phone. This is not true. My Windows 10 PC's do not support Miracast. Nor can I find any way of installing Miracast capability. It appears that if you have upgraded to Windows 10 from Windows 7 you will not have Miracast support, even though the upgrade path included Windows 8 and then 8.1. Furthermore my wife's Windows phone states that it is not capable of projecting it's display. She now has a Samsung phone and a Samsung Android tablet. The display adapter works with the Samsung tablet mirroring it's display to our LG WebOS smart TV. This is basically a good product and should be sold as an open systems solution for mirroring displays to smart TVs over WiFi using HDMI. Instead it has been hijacked by Microsoft and marketed in a grossly misleading manner.Read full review

First off, Microsoft has recently lent me a Wireless Display Adapter for review. I appreciate being able to use this loan unit but that has not influenced my opinion of the device or of Microsoft – this is my personal view and Microsoft have no influence directly or indirectly on my opinions. The wireless adapter is basically a HDMI plug and a USB plug attached by a cable. The cable is about 12” long, but also supplied in the box is an extension cable. This would be handy, but it’s only about 4” long, so it really isn’t too much use! Also there is a dummy ‘connector’ to allow you to join the cable together if you are not using it. The power is supplied by the USB plug so your TV really needs to have a USB socket. If it doesn’t you could power it from a phone charger, but unless your socket is *very* close to the TV you’ll need to buy a USB extension cable. Connecting is just a case of plugging it all in then selecting the HDMI port on your TV remote and then connecting from your phone or tablet. I used a Windows phone and Surface Pro to connect with no issues. By default there is no security applied so you may want change the settings unless you want next door to cast to your telly! To access the settings, you will need to download an app from the Microsoft Store. This will allow you to rename the adapter, change the language or security settings. You can set the adapter to accept either a password or PIN to allow a connection. Any firmware updates can be applied using the app. I’ve not had much luck with Miracast in the past, but this adapter has changed that! I have a Samsung TV with built-in Wi-Fi and connecting usually ends with dropped connections. Also when using Continuum from my 950XL phone the experience was very ‘laggy’ and only just usable. But using the display adapter resulted in a silky smooth experience with no stutter. Playing videos from the Surface Pro was also flawless. Although it may seem a bit on the pricey side, the performance really has changed my view of Miracast. This adapter has to be returned as it’s only a loan, but I’ll be purchasing one myself soon.Read full review

This device is a godsend, cheap and works. I use it with my Windows 10 software ad Intel Wi-Di software. This enables casting of images, video images, music. Full Windows media player sound & vision as seen on my laptop, including Windows Media Player Visualisations. The only thing it appears not to cast (so far) is You Tube video direct to TV. However my two Humax PVRs pick up the You Tube casting from my laptop and You Tube works perfectly too. This device enables FULL CASTING (except to You Tube) directly even on Non - Wi-Fi enabled TVs.
