How an avid Molton Brown fan failed to tell the difference between his favourite £18 soap and Aldi's 80p version – in fact he preferred the cheaper one!

  • Kris Murie is a huge fan Molton Brown toiletries and has a vast collection
  • He agreed to test his favourite brand against the Aldi equivalent at just 89p
  • Kris appears on Supershoppers do Christmas tonight where he admits that he prefers the budget supermarket soap to the high end brand

Many people will be delighted if they get a Molton Brown gift set in their stocking this Christmas.

The British beauty brand has established a reputation for producing high quality soaps, shower gels and moisturisers.

Its luxurious products, sold in department stores like Harrods, come with a hefty price tag – at £18, their 300ml hand soap is so expensive, it costs more per mml than Champagne.

In contrast, budget supermarket Aldi produce a similar product for just 89p.

Its 'luxurious' handsoap for less than a pound comes in a similar-looking bottle to Molton Brown and is sold under the brand name Abbott and Broome.

So would a Molton Brown devotee be able to tell the difference between the cut-price version and the bottle that costs 20 times more?

In a twist presenters Anna Richardson and Andi Osho swap the bottles of the two soaps to prevent Kris from being biased

Kris Murie, 26, who has a huge collection of Molton Brown products at his home in Glasgow, tested the soaps for Channel 4 show Supershoppers do Christmas - and picked Aldi’s version over his usual favourite.

Presenters Anna Richardson and Andi Osho asked Kris to test the £18 Orange and Bergamot handwash against Aldi's Abbott and Broome Sweet Clementine and Grapefruit 'luxourious' handwash sold for 89p.

Kris Murie, 26, who has a huge collection of Molton Brown products at his home in Glasgow, agreed to test the two products and a third 'Proupps and Sheers' – which he was told was new to the market.

Thinking the Molton Brown bottle contained the luxury product he marked that the best

It was in fact a hand soap the Supershoppers team rustled up themselves using cheap ingredients (with the name an anagram of Supershoppers).

That wasn't the only way they pulled the wool over Kris's eyes. To test whether he was influenced by the soaps' brand and packaging, they swapped the contents of the Aldi and Molton Brown bottles.

During the experiment Kris said: 'My first impressions of the bottles are I like Proupps and Sheers the least but I have changed my mind slightly. It does seem to last a long time and leaves your hands feeling as if they are moisturised so it is a two in one type.'

On testing what he thought was the Aldi soap, but was actually his beloved Molton Brown, he said: 'It feels a bit thick, it leaves a clean but false feel.'

However, Anna Richardson (pictured) soon reveals the truth and that actually he favoured the Aldi version of the soap

After testing the three products, Kris concluded that he liked the Molton Brown soap best (which was actually Aldi), ranking the Proupps and Sheers second and the Aldi one (actually Molton Brown) last.

It was then presenter Anna Richardson revealed the truth, and told him the soap he had liked best was from the low-cost German supermarket, while he had liked his favourite brand the least.

On hearing how he had been duped, Kris laughed and said: 'That's very cheeky! I feel a wee bit shocked!'

He admitted that when reviewing the soaps, he has been 'led by the design and the brand'.

He said it has changed his opinion of other brands and he may shop around more in the future.

'Having seen this I may now try some different soaps. I think I will have to go to Aldi and give it a go,’ he said.

Supershoppers Do Christmas is on Channel 4 tonight (Monday) at 8pm
