Completely get the opinion however I don’t know of a solution that is as flexible or slick as the hue - as yet. Sure we will see some more but the competitors - hive cones to mind - are not really any cheaper. If you want a Controlled set of lights that supports tons of fittings, different lamps, motion sensors and switches then I can’t see another option all in one system happy to be corrected though

I'm sure better deals will come again sincere they seem to have run out of stock. I bought a starter kit on boxing day, £90 for three colour bulbs and I got to update my hub to v2 at the same time. My entire downstairs lighting system is Hue (although I couldn't bring myself to pay for the GU10 bulbs). I like the automation, use them with IFTTT.com as well for extra features, but no way would I have paid full price for them.
I did buy a Yeelight to test, good build quality but the colours/brightness not as good as a Hue bulb (but then they are 20% of the price). They still work with my Echo and IFTTT.
As for being clueless, I drive a newish car (it isn't an expensive German one). Should I go everywhere in a twenty year old clunker because it appears to do the same thing?

They're good bulbs but way overpriced - Phillips really are taking the p with the pricing of their colour bulbs. I don't mind paying a bit of a premium for the best but there's a limit.
Also, it's a saving but not really a £50 saving... since few people pay the retail price of nearly £150 for 3 of these. For example the 3 bulb gen 3 kit including Hue hub is on Amazon for £120 at the moment.
If you don't have the need for the extra bit of brightness / colour accuracy these offer there are better value alternatives such as Innr or Yeelight.
BTW, I own Hue, Innr and Yeelight colour bulbs.

I love these Hue Bulbs. The coloured ones work well in the living room and bedroom, where you might want the light adjusting depending on your mood.
I also have the white ones on the stairs, coupled with motions sensors they now act as night lights. When I go upstairs when it's dark and it's before 11pm, they come on full brightness, but if I get up in the middle of the night to go to the loo, they come on dim as night-lights. Enough to see by but not enough to destroy my night-sight.
When linked to Alexa and IFTTT they can do some magical things. I have a routine set that if it's looks like it's raining and it's daytime, they flash a couple of times... warning to bring the washing in. I have other similar routines set to aware/alert me to events, even as trivial as someone important has sent me an email.
I'm about to set up a routine so that if motion is detected outside when we've gone to bed, all the downstairs bulbs flash red. There's a built-in routine to simulate someone being in the house, ideal for when you're actually out or on holiday.
When I get the right fixture, I'm putting one of these outside as a welcome light. It'll be motion or app-activated, and I can adjust the colour depending on my mood.
Okay, £33 a bulb is a lot, but these are a million miles away from 'just' bulbs.

You'll get the same dimmer kits back, because no one has updated the stock codes - I have someone from the stock department supposedly calling me back within 48 hours so I can explain the problem to them, but I doubt it'll happen.
As far as the pickers in the warehouse are concerned, they've picked the right item; the item code for the Edison Ambience bulbs is actually the item code for the standard dimmer kit.
The problem has been around for months, but no one has done anything about it, according to my local store.

There's a serious stocking problem at the moment for the Edison ambience single bulbs - for some reason, the product codes are all over the place. Go into your local store and get them to check out the code for the Bayonet type bulbs (569/8857) as some numpty at Argos has put both the Edison and Bayonet bulbs on the same product code.. the problem is nationwide too.

You can set different motion routines at different times of the day, it's limited to 2 time slots iirc. I needed more slots and special scenarios involving dimmer switches etc. just didn't work for me. The Hue Labs "recipes" let you do much more but they're in beta and don't always work as you expect and you can't run several recipes at the same time to have true automation as I wanted it.

Bought the set with the hub and 3 bulbs for £120 and 3 Echos for £80 when they did Amazon Prime Day sale.
Its great being able to just say Alexa turn on the lights or to dim the light to the right % when eating or relaxing, watching TV.
The lamp stand is behind a corner sofa, so tricky to get to. Would have to put knees in sofa to get to light or bend awkward to get to switch. I figured, if it saves premature death of my seat on the sofa, or the risk of being of work a few days with the increased likelihood of a pulled back, then it has paid itself back.
I do find Alexa challenging at time and wish she would respond to general questions (May look at a Google Home), but though the bulbs are expensive and seem a gimmick, I find anywhere, where you may want a light on for any length of time, with the ability to dim....these are spot on

Sold all my Hue stuff on ebay this wkend, mostly at a profit teehee (buy during sales. black friday etc. then sell just below rrp.)
My kid liked the colour light in his room so I picked up a cheap chinese bulb with a remote instead, £7 delivered from amazon. so much easier to work then having to open an app and risk the hue hub not connecting etc.
