Does this print on both sides of paper?

Yes it does print on both side - I have this model bought it last month. Cracking little printer / scanner.

but is it automatic (duplex enabled) or do you have to turn the paper over yourself manually .. ?

£56.99 at co-op which says it has double-sided printing, yet other places say it doesn't. It doesn't even appear to be on Brother's website - there's a 1510 which is not duplex. Also that price at Amazon.

yep - amazon too have the 1510 with tons of good reviews (answers confirm that one is not duplex, hence asking question to maisemoo above) No mention of duplex on the 1512 (although it's selling on there)

Just had a word with Brother who confirmed that it does not have duplex printing..

was told that if a model does have certain specs, its evident from the model number-
i.e., for a printer with duplex enabled, the model number would have a 'D' at the end.. an 'N' for Network, and a 'W' for wireless....

if you want/need duplex you might consider the recent Ricoh SPC 240 DN deal from Box. With Flubit some of us got it for under £35. That's a networkable (ethernet) colour laser printer with duplex. Goodness knows what a replacement set of toner cartridges will be but it comes with 1000 sheet capacity cartridges so I can thrown it away when they're used and still have a print cost of 3.5p per sheet which is pretty impressive IMHO

No, it definitely doesn't without you having to put the paper back in upside down manually.

Be wary of ultra cheap toners for brother laser printers, the normally lack the sensor window that tells the printer when the toner has gone below a certain level. Yes it's true that brother toners will have a variable amount of toner left inside when the machine tells you to replace it and yes by covering the window or buying a cheap compatible that doesn't even have the window you can get more prints but what many don't realise is that most toner cartridges contain waste toner, it's just that brother cartridges store fresh toner AND waste toner in the same compartment and it keeps them separated with an electrical charge. If you run the cartridge lower than it's supposed to go then the waste toner will start being used again and this will lead to a grey tint across every single page you print, the waste toner will also contaminate the drum unit so that when you change to a fresh toner you will still suffer from the grey "backgrounding"

Where I work we receive a lot complaints about print quality from business customers only to find they are using cheap cartridges or have pushed blu tack into the sensor window on the cartrige and have run it so low that all that's left inside the cartridge is waste toner.

Some of the very newest brother machines no longer use this sensing system but it's worth bearing in mind.

If you want to save money with cheap toners you're probably better looking at an HP, you still get a high failure rate with dirt cheap chinese toners but at least you don't get the waste toner issue.
