I have the Linx 1010 and the 2x Fullsize USB on the tablet itself is a godsend. I believe the **** have it too but on the keyboard, so you *must* have the keyboard with you if you need the full USB, whilst the Linx keyboard is just a keyboard only.

Yes they seem a bargain but I am now very wary of these 32GB laptops, I just returned a HP Stream to Argos. Same disk space. running Celeron .Had good reviews and win 10 on it but it could not find the 8/9 GB to update that.
I am well aware of the necessary option of adding storage to these for your personal files etc but
if a device hasn't enough to run the OS out of the box that is a design fault in my opinion.
Seems others have had the same problem on HP forums. Maybe this Lenovo is different but I
would be very wary for longer term use , as I say.

If Amazon are also doing it at this price might also be worth going via flubit. I will check just now and see the level of reduction on offer.

The instant offer of 3% brings it down to £126.99. Will need to see what the best offer is in a couple of hours.

I don't understand that preference. The Windows OS will allow you to run an Android Emulator like Droid4x and have the best of both world. A productive Windows device with good support for peripherals like printers and scanners and Android OS for whatever your requirements are.

I've owned a couple Android tablets but none since my Dell Venue 11. It's a Windows tablet with a keyboard dock that essentially makes it into a netbook. It has a full size USB port on the tablet, both the keyboard and the tablet charge through a micro USB port so no need to carry a special cable and has a removable battery so in a few years when its capacity is at 50% of new I should be able to swap it out for a new one. Droid4x runs fine although I rarely have a need to use it.

Saves me lugging a full size laptop on weekends away and if I really need an Android device I have my phone.

Last year's model had the 1920 x 1200 IPS screen. Lenovo have gone backwards with the Miix, same as Samsung with their tabs since they dropped the tab pro. Don't get me wrong this is a nice little laptop 2 in 1, very well made for the money, least my Miix 3 is but don't expect to much from that quad core processor as it's benchmark is only 906. It's also a 1.33GHz processor and not 1.83 as advertised. 1.83 is the burst speed. The screen is lovely in 1920 x 1200 which is something this 2 in 1 should have but sadly lacks.

Specs are better (and what I really want in a mini laptop) but not sure you'll get a keyboard, build quality could be all over the shop and the support from Gearbest, according to reviews and this site, is patchy at best.

So it's if you want to take the risk!

Got one. Runs Windows 10 very smoothly with no lag. Office 2015 is no problem too. I added a 32GB Micro SD and changed default saves to there.

It boots from cold in around 20 seconds which is great as on standby it eats battery.

Watch the USB charging as it cannot get enough juice back in than you use if medium to heavy use. Overloads the USB circuit (i.e. when you have a portable HDD at the same time)/

However mine is on its way for repair with a "bad condition" battery. Lenovo answered in 1 hour and sent labels for the return trip to Germany for repair.

Got mine from John Lewis so another 18 months of warranty left!

Hi guy's

I have just bought a Linx 1010B with keyboad.

So far so good as a cheap 2in1. Only criticism is that windows crap as a tablet OS especially with so little apps.

That criticism has nothing to do with the machine, hence still a good buy for what i need it for.

The missus says she wants one so she can use on the tube and do stuff
The 12yr old says she wants one because she thinks money grow on trees

This Miix is a similar price to the Linx1010b though cheaper

Should I get the Miix or the Linx10

Thanks

If you replace windows (unused) with a different OS you can claim back the cost of the windows licence.
The last time I did it was was over a decade ago, I took a series of photos of the process (rejecting the licence agreement, and installing Linux) I printed them all out and sent them with a letter (I thought this would be a better idea as emails are easy to ignore), a few weeks later a cheque turned up though the post. I don't recall exactly how much it was, but I think it was around thirty quid.

Eh not enough space? Windows 10 isn't THAT big, yes it needs management but stick a 128gb sd card in it, set updates to download to it (or disable them entirely) clear out any restore points, previous OS etc and 10 uses around 20gb tops that still leaves a third of the space free.

I suspect the problems cone from people who don't show it a little tlc

This already comes with windows 10 pre-loaded so no issues with necessary disc space. Most people who will have had issues having the necessary disk space may have been due to loading programmes on it prior to downloading the necessary update from micrososft or as the case with me the download failed 3 times. I purposely did not use mine for two weeks before the update became available. Each time the windows update downloads and fails it takes up valuable space on the machine. You have to delete it manually and try again. Even setting up another user on these can reduce drive space by nearly half a gig. Windows advises 16gb of free space to downloaded windows 10. That's a bit tight if it keeps downloading the update and fails. You have to go into the windows folder, software, downloads and delete all the files and then try the download again. Then eventually you will get windows 10 on 32gb laptops.

What nobody tells you is that the first thing you should do when you buy a device with 8.1 on it is to delete or back up the programmes you don't want. Get as much free space as possible. Download from windows update. If you have 8.1 you need to get rid of the recovery partition. That's when it becomes interesting. After you have windows 10 on your machine and working you need to download the windows iso file using the media creation tool. Run it from usb and then create a windows recovery disk. After you have done that you get the laptop to boot from usb using the recovery disk you have made. Then you have a fresh install of windows 10 with the drivers to run everything and no crap or bloatware. Now you can start using your laptop properly. Or you can just buy an android device and forget the above and have an extra night or two in the week to catch up on tv. Why microsoft make things so complicated I don't know.

Done the above on my miix 3 last year, that was the one with the high resolution screen and not this one which is an average 1280 x 800.
Smartguy1
18 Feb 16 #100
Can you use the chromebook as a tablet also or physically install microsoft office on it or other programmes . No you can't. This is a laptop that has the ability to be a tablet also. That is why some people will buy one of these as it's dual purpose and someone who just wants to surf the internet and type emails using a keyboard amy buy a chromebook or perhaps an android tablet. I have the miix 3. It won't blow anything out of the water but neither will the chromebook you put forward. The laptop is fine for surfing the internet, emails, running small programmes with the added bonus that I have full office on mine. Not to mention I can use it as a tablet or a laptop. Mine however has a superior screen to that posted as Lenovo have gone backwards in terms of screen resolution. Watching videos on a 1920 x 1200 screen is amazing.

Ah yes. That will teach me for scan reading. I wonder if it has anything to do with the HP being 64-bit, if indeed it is 64-bit, as opposed to 32-bit which is what my Miix is. It would have been interesting to know what size the recovery partition was showing on the HP. All I know is on the miix with 8.1 it had about 16gb free when it had done all the updates before windows 10 came out. After 3 failed attempts of downloading windows 10 it was showing 6gb of free space. Clearing out the downloads folder in windows system folder got it back to 16gb again and then I managed to download successfully. It was showing about 10gb free space after windows 10 installed but I still had the windows 8.1 recovery partition in place.

After then doing a fresh install of windows 10 and removing the recovery partition I had about 16gb space which is where I started with win 8.1. About 2 weeks ago I easily managed the new update of windows 10 and with a few programmes such as Avast, Chrome, Office 365 and a couple of others I have just under 15gb free space which will see me out for a while.

Strange about the HP though. It's like they still have the windows 8.1 recovery partition on them. However if it hasn't then HP need to do some serious thinking as it looks like their machines with 32gb are not for for purpose.

Had mine a couple days and very happy with it, it's just like a real laptop when attached to the keyboard, the processor and built in graphics are actually very very good for low end, I'm currently playing dota 2 on it :O. Boots in seconds, runs everything perfectly, Windows 10 only takes up about 8.7gb of the built in storage which is nice, it has two full size USB ports on the keyboard, unlike older models it's not just a keyboard case with a stand to hold it up its fits on to a real hinge and holds its own weight so you don't need a flat surface to use it, the screen I thought would be disappointing but it isn't at all it's really sharp and clear I mean it is HD after all which people forget. Battery life is great lasts a full day of general use. Not much else to say really if someone said to me you can buy an actual real laptop brand new for just over £100 I wouldn't believe them oh and it's also a tablet with a touch screen :O

Hope the SD card slot is a more robust design than the Miix 3 of last year, I had two of them and on both the flap wouldn't stay closed with a card installed. Really poor build quality in general with that model, but then it was cheap. Hope this newer model is a bit more solid.
stevesuk to TheVoice

No flap on these, just a recessed socket on the back of the device.

If it's anything like the situation with Windows 8.1 (with Bing), I doubt they're paying much/anything for the Windows 10 licence for these devices in the first place.

Can someone that's bought one confirm if you can charge via USB or is only via a separate PSU. Will kind of defeat the object of portability if I have to cart around a laptop PSU with me.
stevesuk to Wirral_guy
22 Feb 16 2 #125
Mine arrived yesterday (from Amazon), and although the socket/connector on the tablet is proprietary, the power supply end is just a standard full sized USB plug. So although you'd need to carry around the charging cable, you don't necessarily need to carry around a bulky PSU (so long as where you're going, there's going to be somewhere you can plug in a standard USB cable). As an example, it seems to be fairly content to run off my Anker portable charger.

It seems an OK piece of kit (I'm comparing it to the Linx 1010b, which I sent back to Amazon as it developed a fault). A couple of odd things compared to the Linx:

- There's no "Windows" button on the tablet screen bevel
- When you dock or undock the keyboard, there's no automatic mode switching. On other Windows tablets (including the Linx), there is some kind of driver/mechanism that figures out when you have the tablet docked with the keyboard base, and automatically disables the tablet features (and the opposite, when you disconnect the keyboard base). The Miix doesn't seem to have this feature.
- The keyboard layout (hardware keyboard) has an annoying extra key on the top row, which throws out the usual alignment of the number keys. So for example, the "1" key sits above and to the right of the "Q" key (where as on most keyboard, it would be directly above, or to the left). Takes a bit of getting used to when typing fast.
- On the plus side, the keyboard base has two full sized USB sockets (one either side towards the rear). Perfect for connecting a USB mouse or memory stick.

On the second point, it was the automatic mode switching that stopped working on my Linx tablet  So I'm not that unhappy that you have to occasionally tap on an icon to tell it that its in "tablet" mode. Rather that than the device becoming irrecoverably stuck in one mode or the other (which is what happened with my Linx - it got stuck in "laptop" mode).

Anyone have any idea if this would be ok for my daughter to play minecraft on?
JeeBeePSB
21 Feb 16 1 #122
It may play the Windows 10 Edition of Minecraft (which is based off of the Android/iOS codebases roughly) fairly well.

Full Minecraft is unlikely:

Windows 8.1 32-bit Intel Atom Z3735F 1.33GHz Intel HD Graphics 311MHz 2GB DDR3 1333MHz Samsung BWBC3R 1366×768 1.5.3 1.8.1 12-14 10-14 11-13 Zotac PI320. Java 1.8.0.25. Driver version v10.18.10.3958.

That's 12-14 fps at 854x480 - unplayable.

Complete technophobe so advice please, my 11 year old needs a computer for homework, mainly word documents. Would this be any good?
stevesuk to fluffytownes
23 Feb 16 #132
Depends whether he/she needs the tablet functions or not? If they only need a laptop, then you'll find that a similarly priced laptop will do a better job (larger screen, better keyboard). If they want to also use it as a tablet (i.e. like an iPad without a keyboard attached), then it would be fine for web surfing and also lightweight Word processing. Mine came with Office Mobile installed. That has a cut-down version of Word (and Excel) - but I guess it would be fine for simple documents. I just checked, and it outputs the same file format as my "proper" copy of Office 2010.

So I guess it would depend whether its likely to be used most of the time as a tablet, or as a laptop. As a laptop, its going to be a bit of compromise (especially with the size of the keyboard/screen). But if its going to be used 50% tablet, 50% laptop, and you don't have massive expectations over performance, then it will probably be fine.

Most business also use Lenovos as their product of choice for mobile workers... in 7 Years I've only had one issue with a lenovo device, and that was a non lenovo component... and my gear really does take a bashing.

Thanks, already has an iPad so would be mainly used for word processing

23 Feb 16 #134
If you're not going to be using it as a tablet, then you're probably better off getting a proper laptop. You'll get a slightly larger screen, and a keyboard without any compromises in layout/size. That said, this Lenovo tablet/keyboard probably would do the job in most cases, and does come with Office Mobile pre-installed (most laptops won't come with any form of Office software).

Is there one for the lenovo miix?

23 Feb 16 #138
What I would really like is this sort of set-up but with a decent amount of memory (4GB or even 8GB) with HDMI out (and possibly in, so the "tablet" could be used as an external display for other devices) and a 1080p screen. I would happily pay £150 for that sort of spec - especially if there were XP drivers available! 8-)

bought this Monday night - got home today, opened the package, plugged the charger in (as per the 3 step guide) pressed the on button and nothing......really disappointed with lenovos quality control, needless to say my first and last purchase from this brand, hence mega cold added,,,
stevesuk to anglingedge
24 Feb 16 #141
Have you tried holding down the button for a couple of seconds? I seem to remember that from a cold boot, a "press" isn't enough (presumably to stop you switching it on by mistake when in a bag or something)
Smartguy1 to anglingedge

Yes as the post above suggests. You have to leave it plugged in for a few minutes and then press the power button for up to 5 seconds. Wait for the LENOVO splash screen to come on always before you let go of the power button. Its not like your regular samsung, lg etc. I have the miix 3 and thought mine was faulty at first.

I have tried for up to 15 seconds, when I turn the charger off the light on the side goes from a yellow colour to red the goes off. when I turn it back on it goes red, then yellow. it does not flash..

You need to leave the charger plugged in. Don't switch it off as the battery is possibly too flat to load windows. Leave it plugged in charging and then try after 15 minutes with the charger plugged in and switched on.

Ok, looks like you may have a dud. Take it back and get it swapped. Don't let it put you off. There are loads of us who have bought these with no issues but for some reasons Lenovo won't boot up until you see the splash screen. Its the same on our 7" tab as well.

Hi, can I ask how you find typing things, doing word etc, when in desktop mode? I found the 'icons' and toolbar words very small and hard to hit on 10in windows tablets.
seejaythinks
24 Feb 16 #148
I am fine with it. When in desktop mode, typing on the keyboard feels great - I did survive uni with a netbook on the go, so this is very much like a netbook, which allows me to detach and use as tablet.

The main thing is getting used to using the keyboard, trackpad and tapping the screen on 'small icons'.
Smartguy1
24 Feb 16 #150
They are hard to hit. I thought it was because of the 1920 x 1200 resolution on mine but looks like its the same on the lesser resolution screen. You can adjust the title bars in settings, display, advanced settings I think. Default is set at 8 or 9. I set mine to 11 for title bars, menu titles etc. You have to set each one and then tick apply. You can't do them all to a higher number and tick apply, it has to be one by one. You can also set the custom scale to 175% which may help. It maybe set to this already but worth checking. If it's still too small get a stylus, it make it easier.

stevesuk to 80PIH
27 Feb 16 #153
They look very similar spec. wise (same CPU, RAM and storage), so maybe its down to personal preference?

One thing I would say - the keyboard looks a bit more familiar/usable (on the Asus). On the Lenovo, the top row of number keys doubles as the function keys - and also the numbers are 1 key further to the right than you'd expect. You do get used to it, but it feels a little awkward.

On the other hand, the Asus comes with Windows 8, and relies on you updating to 10 - which is perhaps not ideal?

Swings and roundabouts I reckon.

Edit: the Lenovo has an extra USB port I think (two USB ports on the keyboard dock, one MicroUSB on the tablet itself)
80PIH
29 Feb 16 #154
Thank you for the opinion. I do appreciate it...
In this case I'll go with Lenovo as it's cheaper for similar bit of kit.
